East RC Lucky 13...
We've sold a lot of the Lucky-13's at East RC over the last 3 years. I've flown them with 4-stroke glow, 2-stroke glow, and electric power. My favorite setups were Lucky-13's assembled by Dave Langridge & Chris Hockaday as electric power. Dave's was very laid back, and Chris' was knife-edge looping crazy. I decided to take the electric route on mine... I'm moving along pretty well on mine, and now have the motor & speed controller installed, cowling fitted, etc. I got the solid white version and plan to start with the decoration tomorrow night. You can see some pics of the project at:

Kadet Senior Re-Rebuild completed
I finally finished the last touches on my Senior. I've been flying it for the last year without a cowling. My friend Bryan gave me a cowling from an old Senior he had, to complete mine. It was cut out for an upright engine installation. I glassed over the opening, trimmed it for my 90 degree mounted engine, primed, and painted it. It's now installed and looking great.

I originally assembled this from 3 crashed airplanes that folks gave me. After flying it for a couple of years, a fuel tank leak into the battery put it in pretty hard. I got a partial fuselage from Bryan from one of his previous crashes, chopped off the part I needed, used that to repair my bird, and it's back in the air again. You can see the second rebuild pics online at:

Finally finishing up my old Senior...
I just finished priming the cowling for my Kadet Senior, and hope to get it painted tomorrow. It was an old cowling that I got from my friend Bryan, filled in some unwanted openings, and opened it up to fit my engine. You can see a pic of it at:

I had a battery failure last year when the fuel tank got unknowingly sprung a leak on it, and caused an internal short while in flight. The bird pitched downward and splattered into the ground from about 100' when this happened. You can see pics of the repairs at:

Check your batteries!
I know most of you are aware that you should do this, but I was very surprised to find many of my NiMh and NiCd batteries had become toasted just from not using them for about 10 months. Several of them were only about 2 years old, and they all had been kept on a trickle charger during my period of inactivity. I was guilty, last year, of charging them many times, only to not go flying. A few weeks would pass, and I'd charge them again. No doubt that is what help kill them...

I cycled them on my battery cycler, and found that several were way below capacity. Some were only down a bit, and snapped right back to full rating once cycles a few times...but the rest were way below capacity and wouldn't come back.

I contacted my friend Matt Anderson at Anderson RC, ordered replacements, and all is back to normal. Don't trust your airplanes to marginal batteries...check/cycle them, and replace at the first signs of loosing capacity!

Battery replacement update...
Well, I just returned from the workshop and replaced the flight battery in my East RC Spoiler. It was a 3300 mah NiMh and had dropped to about 500 mah in capacity. I had Matt from Anderson RC send me a 3300+ batt (needed the nose weight), and got a 4200 mah pack. Nice! Got it in stalled, got the hatch all buttoned back up, and she's ready to fly. I can hardly wait to get one of my favorite birds back to the field. You can see some of the pics of the change down near the bottom of the page in this link:

Back on the sticks again...
I've been wrapped up in work for the last couple of years, but have finally been able to get back on the sticks and start getting some air time back under my belt. Really nice to be back flying, and I'm looking forward to being able to fly more in the coming weeks.

During my down time I sold a good bit of my RC gear, and I'm getting the airplanes I still have back airworthy and finish a few of my older projects. I'll be posting updates on some of my old kit builds and scratch build projects that are underway.

See ya at the field!
