Flounder (US, SS-212 Gato class) currently on sea trials.
Electric Powered Non-Electric Powered
MODEL Flounder (US, SS-212 Gato class) currently on sea trials.
ENGINE: 2 scavenged toy rc car motors
RECEIVER: 1 49MHz from a toy rc fireboat (diving control), 1 27MHz from a toy rc car (engine room), both augmented with custombuilt power-output and device-selection circuits
SERVO: scavenged toy rc car motor (Rudder)
TRANSMITTER: Toy r/c car transmitters (yep, even for the 49mhz ex-fireboat receiver that's controlling dives)
BATTERY: 8 x AA NiMH cells in series, 20 amp-hours.
ESC: n/a
MODIFICATIONS: Two prop shafts. 2 ballast tanks, 1 channel each: 1 ballast tank forward and 1 aft. In-house designed Co2 ballast system: push stick up, blows tank; push stick down, opens tank-flood solenoid.

Manta (US, SSN-21 Seawolf class)
Electric Powered Non-Electric Powered
MODEL Manta (US, SSN-21 Seawolf class)
ENGINE: Getting a new motor.
RECEIVER: n/a Manta decommissioned and partly cannibalized for my other sub but Manta will be restored.
SERVO: toy r/c car motor (Rudder)
SERVO2: Ballast pump: Automotive windshield-washer pump
TRANSMITTER: From r/c car
BATTERY: Eight AA NiMH cells
ESC: Manta in action http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n_Xcv4d6VnQ
MODIFICATIONS: Manta is version 2.0 of Kraken (my other model shown here). Kraken was able to dive without a ballast tank, but a ballast tank means smoother driving underwater because the sub doesn't want to pop back up so readily. Despite the tank, Manta's not a static diver - - Manta is an advanced dynamic diver (requires motion to dive).

Kraken (US, SSN-21 Seawolf class)
Electric Powered Non-Electric Powered
MODEL Kraken (US, SSN-21 Seawolf class)
ENGINE: Salvaged Dremel-tool motor. Direct-drive.
RECEIVER: Taken from sacrificial r/c boat 49mhz
SERVO: A motor sealed and used wet (Rudder)
SERVO2: A motor with gearing sealed and used wet (Elevator)
TRANSMITTER: Taken from sacrificial r/c boat
BATTERY: Sub has eight AA NiMH cells
ESC: Sorry to say I never videoed a Kraken cruise.Received ballast tank conversion, recommissioned asManta
MODIFICATIONS: Homebuilt dynamic diver (sub that dives using fins and motors instead of a ballast tank). I built the WTC (watertight cylinder, the heart of an r/c submarine) from Home Depot parts and took the receiver from a Wal-Mart r/c boat.
