Just getting a J3 Cub finished up that will fly 2 channel RC with a Cox 020 Tee Dee. This was originally a rubber band model that I modded. It's very light, won't survive a crash, but I don't plan to crash it. Already thinking about going smaller .. anyone built a 010 RC? Any RTFs available, or plans?

Yes, I have seen that Stick, but it doesn't appeal to me. I like something bigger/slower, relatively speaking. Was looking at the "Baby Boomer" but not sure if 010 will fly that plane.

I bought a Herr Star Cruiser kit from him and was pleased with the experience. I emailed him with some questions and he was prompt with his response. His prices are very resaonable too.

I think the Lightning Bug from Early RC Models would be an excellent candidate for your .010. Built light, it should fly very well on that engine. I love the Cox .010 and built a Lightning Bug several years ago but put a .020 Pee Wee on it. It was actually a little much engine for it in my opinion.

JMGlaskraft makes 3 sporty planes for the .010: the MicroShark, Yellow Jacket, Rivets, and PeeWee Penetrator. They are all fast, stable sport flyers/scale pylon racers.

You'll surely enjoy having a TD .010 powered airplane. I've built several planes for those little engines and love to fly them regularly. It still awes me to watch something so small run and fly so well. The gearhead modelers at my club always get a kick out of them as well. It breaks the monotony of all the electrics and big gassers that they bring to fly. The little noisy planes with their short run times offer a sort of comic relief to the day at the field. The Early RC models fly well and look really nice. I know you don't care for the LaSticks but they really do fly well. Nice and docile with a .010 and a rocketship with a TD .020. Have fun and keep us posted on the project. Lots of us here dig this stuff.

Yep, Select Hobbies has quite a few. The School Boy, Roaring 20, Lighting Bug, Little Roughneck and Wee Stick all are excellent flyers with a Tee Dee .010. You must build them light and use lighter gear but all I have flown with Ace single channel pulser gear and Tee Dee .010.

What do you folks think about landing gear on these little ones? I fly on my own hayfield, no asphalt, so it can be a little bumpy (the odd bit of sheep poop as well). Is it practical to land a plane this small on grass?

nope. wheels just make sure you land face first, best to belly land on grass, but, often enough if you have gear ,you can yank the tail up and land in a couple of feet anyway, so its a gamble...Rog

Just looked at my computer files. Besides the Pageboy and Schoolboy for .010, I have articles on the Gnat, a 7.5" span bipe from RCM, and the Tranquilizer, a stick and tissue for .010 or .020 for either FF or RR, or CL with an .049 from a late 50s, early 60s Flying Models.

One of my earliest RC flights I had was with either a Top Flite Schoolboy or Rascal 27 with single channel escapement and a Cox .010. Actually got a reasonable flight, went up again without remembering to rewind the escapement rubber. Had a flyaway

I'am trying to remember something that happened about 1963, but I recall the fuse was very similar to the Schoolboy, but with an all-sheet semi-eliptical wing. was a bit ticked off with myself, at the time that engine was something like $6.95 plus sales tax, or almost 6 hours pay from my job at the time.

I have flown alot of rather heavy loaded (very small) planes with 020Peewees. Never got around to build this one though! Kinda cute i think! maybe some day. Jonas

Models this small are totally useless with landing gear unless you fly from a dead smooth bare patch of dirt or off some form of pavement. Meanwhile they hold the model back in the air a lot.

But then again some models just don't look right without gear. So go with what your heart and eyes tell you.

The most successful small planes I have built for .010 and .020 engines have been more like motorgliders than anything else. A single wheel in the fuselage and a music wire skid on the nose makes for good landings. I first did this with an extended wingspan version of the Mayfly built from MAN plans in the early 70s.

Just a little insight to how much power and torque that little .010 can develop. Some years ago, I obtained a Jetco Yellowjacket free flight kit. A profile all sheet bipe. Plans showed engines of around .035 to .045. I built it with a Cox .010. Got the glide trim down just right. But, to date, every time I try to fly it under power, it has a left torque roll that makes it look like it's attached to a high speed electric drill. No warps, but adding right rudder, right thrust, down thrust, running rich, running prop on backwards, has not cured the problem. Since years ago I did see one flying, maybe I need an old O. K. Cub .039? Plane is 19" span, weighs 3 1/8 ounce. Light enough to bounce without damage, even under power. One of the photos shows it next to my war weary Park Zone micro P-51.

What is the span of the plane in the center picture? And how many channels are you using? It look very small compared to the Tx behind and the prop and seems to be rudder only but I wonder how
it perform without dihedral and those huge wheels.
