Goldberg 1/2 A Skylark
Interesting how we go back to the vintage models to find something "new". I was looking around for an ARF for my 400 size EP motor, but I couldn't find anything that peaked my interests. So I started looking around for small wood kits and found these older 1/2 A CGM kits and plans. I had flown the large Skylark ARF, but needed something smaller, so I bought a set of these 1/2 A Skylark plans. I chose to scratch build from the plans because this model has ailerons (unlike the JR Skylark kit) and I had plenty of scrap balsa laying around. The only mods I did from the plans was use full wing spars with shear webbing, steerable nose wheel, larger ailerons and elevator and made an EP motor mount. I'll use the traditional red and black color scheme, but use transparent red on wings and stab. I'll update with more photos once this has been covered.

But with modern light weight radio and power systems, they are almost new again. Gone are the days of 24 ounce 1/2A aircraft, or at least they should be..

Yep, a wonderful classic design from the days when folks actually wanted to make their models look nice.

I down loaded the plans a while back and have been looking at them lately,I was going to do the same thing, (electric Jr Skylark with ailerons) But I have to wait till I get my 28" bipe stik covered. I put a 2208/09 on it.
I have been debating on if I wanted to go with twin Parkzone 250's or a single WayPoint 2205-32 on 2S lipo.I already have the 5 gram micro servos
What is the wing spanof the 1/2A Skylark? Whatis the differance between the two other than ailerons and less dihedral?

It has the same 37" wingspan. This was re-designed for aileron use, that's all. I thought a steerable nose wheel would be a nice touch, which wasn't on plans. Here are some photos of the finished model.

I remember fondly the Skylarks that I built over the years. I had a couple of .049 versions and later built a twin with Cox Pee Wee .020 engines.
I built it since on the planes they showing the info for making a twin and one day I had to do it. Some days it was awe inspiring when the engines wanted to run, other days it was a exercise in futility trying to get both engines to run. But as a twin it looked pretty cool though. Lots of bragging rights to it then.

I used Oracover flourecent transparent red on wings and stab, true red opaque on the fuse and fin with TF Super Monocote black and white trim colors.

But really, how about redrawings of the mods you're making, and how much down and right thrust are you leaving (if at all?), and what wing incidence are you using?
She looks very sweet though... The whole CG Falcon family always did need more elevator and ailerons, couldn't ever get enough aileron with them, I've always wanted to build a super falcon 56 and Sr.

I just built per plans with larger ailerons and elevator. 0 degree thrust angles, incidence per plans and bought a 1/2A steerable nose gear. Added a 1/8" lite ply EP motor mount. That's all, everything else is stock.

I was thinking of adding an additional 12mm to 15mm of nose length between the firewall and F2 and a single glider style partially captive, short-mounted slim-style wheel, and small skid-tips on the wingtips and tail. Either that or center skid, or a conventional arrangement and tillerable tail-wheel.
But one thing I would like to do is add a full rudder through that tail section like a reasonable pattern plane!
I sure would like you to post a few closeups of how you've installed the nosewheel and etc.
How many deg of dihedral did you use?
