Great pics!
Too bad everybody doesn't "get it"! It was wonderful outside of the drama caused by one guy that just couldn't loosen up & enjoy the fun. Hope he sets up away from us next year.

Troy,

Great pics! Nice for those of us that could not attend. Definitely provides a feel of how the field and weather was as well as the people and models present.

Nathan and I just reviewed them and recognize lots of familiar faces. He says hello to Kevin and Eddie (recognized them immediately).

Great to see Kyle's Dads Mystery Plane rebuilt after last years incident.

Looking forward to next year,
Brian and Nathan

Who makes the Ag Cat kit? I grewup with those roaring over my house as a kid, as they defoliated the cotton fields that we lived next to, and our trees as well as they pulled up right in front of our house.

Pat Tritle built the AgCat. Not sure if he produces a kit for it, though. He won the Best Scale Aircraft award for it. It flew great in the early morning calm air. On a sidenote, I was the lucky winner of one of his Clipwing Taylorwing kits in the raffle.

Funny you should ask, Dave. When they gave me the award, they didn't mention a particular plane. They said it was for my overall small glow presentation. They said it was noted that I flew pretty consistently for several days, showed good engine runs, and generally kept them "yanking and banking" during the weekend. Anyone who's seen my models knows they are built to fly and not for show, so I was surprised but pleased to recieve the award. I remember answering questions from several folks about my planes during the event, who designed them, and what engines powered each one. Planes with TD .010, TD .020, Surestart .049s with throttles, TD .049, OS .15, and OS .25FX were flown. The model that prompted the most inquires was my Scoundrel designed by skaliwag. It was it's 2nd trip to SMALL.

No worries, Dave. You won't find me competing with you for awards. I go to SMALL to simply have fun. With that said, I was more tickled to receive the award than if it had been a Nobel Peace Prize.

Best SMALL video I've ever seen, Hollis! Really captures the spirit of the event. For those who weren't there, it did eventually fly around the pattern successfully, followed by shrieks of excited joy. I think I've got that flight on video.

Almost had 5 succesfull flights on my T-45 Hawk !! and almost lost my e-flight, L-4 in a thermal !! It was Fun, Fullowship & Flying !! Truly one of the best SMALL events ever !! Thanks again guys !! Heres to the memories !! Dale P.S. Pat you finnaly did it !! I flew nothing but electrics, well no, not so My ringmaster had a Testors/McCoy .049 on it !! & oh yaa I had a kill in my Mig 15s first sortie !! So Sorry about that Carl !! But who woulda thought that payback wast just a day away !! I guess me & Carl are the only modelers who have killed each others planes without flying them !! LOL Only at SMALL !!

Sparky's rocket. For those who weren't at the event, there was a lot of pre-fly-in talk about bringing some model rockets. Some of us had a "blast" launching them in between airplane flights. There were a couple of small mishaps but lots of good laughs occurred and lessons were learned. Anyway, Keith Sparks brought an Estes Phoenix that he built years ago, modded with 2 stages with 4 C-class engines per stage! He never had the nerve to fire it until this weekend. Lots of folks got involved and put their heads together to attempt to give the launch a chance of success. In the end it flew well. All 4 booster engines lit simultaneously and it flew pretty straight. The 2nd stage only had 2 engines light but it continued up nicely. The chute ripped away at deployment but the rocket and nosecone tumbled down safely and were recovered by a crew who braved tall grass, barbed wire, electric fences, thorns, and chiggers. A great way to cap off a fun weekend of SMALL flying.

Well; it means more than the Nobel prize! Look at the last few of those.

To be recognized by the Stalwarts at SMALL is pretty special... the plaque and t-shirt I got at SMALL last year mean more to me than any award I have ever gotten, even more than my 2nd at the Speed 400 Pylon nationals. I spent 20 years reading about SMALL in Flying Models before I went for the first time, and the people that 'make' the event what it is are special people to me because of all the articles, design plans, and event coverage I have seen over the years. I see guys like Randy Randolph, Steve Staples, Paul Willenborg and their co-conspirators as modeling heros for the light hearted approach to modeling in a 'hobby' that tends to slot people into categories and have them push extremes in a way that is not for the faint of heart or wallet.

As for Tee Bee, I'm just glad I don't have to come up with a JATO assisted ducted fan .010 next year!

So, is there a design challenge for next year at SMALL 2013?

Typically each year someone will come up with an idea for everyone to design, build and fly at next year's SMALL.

This year's was something to do with a rocket in combination with an r/c aircraft.

There were a few rc rocket gliders and boost gliders launched over the weekend with varying degrees of success. Not bad for a bunch of plane nuts who don't normally mess with solid fuel machines. Getting them off the pad successfully and to fly a straight path upward seemed to be a challenge.

Wouldn't it be neat to see a rocket-boosted 1/2A RC plane next year?

The key for consistent rocket boosted RC launches is a well configured pad. Even simple ones work well - along with a central launch rid, add two guide rods, one placed under each wing tip work wonders. And don't attempt to launch vertically, but rather at ~20-30deg off of vertical. Or, for the more glideresque models, hand launch them and ignite with an ESC in flight. The energy you impart with a handlaunch is quite a bit, getting that mass up to a moderate speed. Launch fairly flat and hard, pull the nose up a bit and light.

I had three successful launch and R/C glides on this CP-1. The last one the motor block slid forward and the plane didn't leave the pad. You can see the hole it burned in one of the photos in a previous post. Thanks to Jim S. for snapping this photo. The first flight was when everyone had left for the night.
