Default Kadetito

I've been having a lot of fun with this project. I have a Kadet Senior that I built and soloed on that I have been flying for about a year. I saw reference to the Kadetito here on RCUniverse and found plans online. The only thing that you really have to "make" is the wing ribs and a few plywood formers for the fuselage. Everything else is just sticks.

Target weight is 25 oz but I'm pretty sure I'll blow that out of the water. I got smaller servos and a AAA receiver battery, but I guess I'm heavy handed on the glue (and I guess the 1/8" oak pieces for the lander gear plug didn't help). She will have a TT .07 that came off my 1/2a Buzzard Bombshell (may she rest in piece).

Nice looking plane so far. They are one of those timeless designs. I still have a Kadet Senioreta (2nd one, 2 Senoirs too) after 30 years of this and they still fly great. I also have a 45" one powered by an old Cox Medallion 09 with a barrel throttle. Still floats like a champ. Spin a nice big prop on it as it's not a speedster.

Thanks guys. I just got the plans on Ebay actually. It looks exactly like the Senior plans expect for the wing. I'm not a fan of the wing...but we'll see.

What's different with the wing? I made mine bolt on. I hate rubber-bands.

There is nothing "wrong" with the wing. The shape is fine. The sheeting doesn't look right to me. The Senior wing was all open. If I planned to cover the wing with monokote or similar I probably wouldn't care. As a matter of fact, this wing is VERY strong. I believe if I laid it between two saw horses I could walk across it. I think I can make it lighter and look like the traditional wing by using the outline on the plans, but copying the frame design on the original. Won't take but a day to build, and I have all the stuff to make another one....

Trying to get the fuel tank as high as I can. The center line will still be below the carb, but I've cut out the formers as much as i dare to raise it as high as I can. Hope the tt will be able to get what it needs.

And a photo of the proud papa....

Hey Bolar, I noticed your Kadetito doing a search. I wish I had thought to do that earlier. She looks awesome! Can you tell me waht she weighted? I'm gettin' nervous.

Off hand I don't remember, I'll have to weigh it and I'll let you know. I was a little concerned with mine while building, it felt a little heavy for an .049, but once I got everything dialed in...perfect! I have a lot of fun with it.

Ouch. I think I'll miss 1 lb 7 oz. Heck, I'm not even using ailerons. I can't help myself, epoxy, supports, reinforcements. Not sure how i got so heavy....

This is what I meant about the wings. The wing in the foreground is the first one I built per plans. It is very strong but it is heavy and doesn't have the "bones" of the Kadet. I built the one in the background over the Kadetito plans, but used the framework design of the Senior. It is definitely not as solid, but should be solid enough (I hope), and weighs 4 oz lighter. Also, the plans wing is so stiff, I doubt I'd be able to get the washout the plans calls for.

I get what you mean about rubber bands for the wings. Everything I have ever built had rubber bands for the wings...

Build to fly, not to crash. You can't add enough strength to save your plane in a serious crash - added weight simply means that more energy must be dissipated on impact. Extremely light planes tend to bounce rather than disintegrate.

D-tube construction yields one of the strongest built-up wings possible. It's stiff, very resistant to lateral and torsional bending, but as you found, it's heavier and really better suited for larger planes. The Kadetito was designed to be a floater, fly at a relatively slow speed and it is not to be aerobatic. Stick construction in the wing and fuselage was intended to keep it light, but it's sufficiently strong to fly the plane as designed.

EDIT: I failed to mention that both wings are very nicely constructed - you've done an excellent job with both.

I like the light wing, much more in keeping with the rest of the aircraft.

What weight are you at now? With the .07 you should be fine. I like the light wing you built, it will look good with some transparent covering.

I'm getting close to starting to cover. I still have a few little things to finish up first. That .07 with the muffler is heavy so I mounted the servos as far back as I dared. With just about everything on the airframe except the pushrods for the throttle and nose wheel steering, and covering, the fuse is 15.5 oz. The wing is 3.5, so I thing I'll be at my target if the covering isn't to heavy. I'm going to use Coverlite and have no experience with it...so I'll keep my fingers crossed. I know it's screaming for silk, but I haven't had any luck with that lately, I didn't think silk span would be strong enough.

The Balsarite I just bought is VERY thick. I guess I expected it to be similar to dope. I added some laquer thinner until it got thin enough to brush on. I tested a piece on the "heavy" wing it seemed to come ocut okay.

I picked up a 350 mAh aaa 4.8v receiver pack to save a few ounces. Will that be enough for an 8 or 10 minute flight around the field? My aa 4.8v 600 mAh will fit, but I'd love to save the two ounces.

Trying to add pics but getting goofy errors......

I use life packs 1.4 oz total weight , discharge rate is very low and last much longer than AAA batteries.

All my servos have never had any issue with 6.6 v you'r going to love it.

Thanks Wagon1. I'll take it from here. Please PM me and I will send you my address to ship to. Thanks. LOL.

Looking GREAT. When I finally get around to mine, I hope it will look as good as yours. Can't wait to see it with the covering.

This is one outstanding charger , not expensive at all and if you want to charge any type of batt's order the harness.

Hope it helps.
