The 1/2A speed guys were using single blade 5" pitch at one time when nitro was allowed. Now it is 10%, and they rev them higher. I think they are at about 140 mph. Thick lines surely slow them down a lot. I have not been to Muncie now for a couple of years but things look about the same for speeds. They have a pipe. The draggy Profile Proto 1/2A unpiped, were mostly in the 90 mph area, maybe 100 IIRC. Looking at Mike's Profi, I am kicking myself for getting the Fora. It has no way of using a pipe or throttle/cutoff. Oh well, onto a combat plane I guess. I think I will get a few fiberglass props from Yaro next time I see him. The 4.75- 4.75 electric APCs work well for the reedies, but I don't trust them with a Fora, so I guess I have to join the revup club at some point. I think the speed guys are in the mid 30,000 to maybe even close to 40,000 now with the 10% nitro they are forced to use.

2-1/2 to 2-5/8 x 4-5 is typical one blade these days.

Tomorrow I'll try to get the Toucan to behave for some Doppler passes (with headcam video).

Turns out the engine will stabilize around 27k static on this prop, esp as soon as a I take a deep breath and fine tune it carefully.. may thin and trim some more, but will fly first. Not sure much unloading to expect, but this isn't a proto ukie capping out just north of 100. Should pick up a few thou so long as it gets needled fat enough.

It should unload a bit in the air with the high pitch. Still waiting. Here was too friggin hot, but the wind was not too bad.

I'd expect it will unload a fair bit, this is really high pitch for an .049 and 2-blades. I may have to drop pitch and unwind the engine a lot more, we'll see.

I think the plug was leaking around the seal and that's why the last couple of outings were such a headache. Reassembled the engine this evening, put the plug back in and flip flip.. hmm, that doesn't feel great.. losing compression at TDC. Where is it going? A few drops of WD40 around the plug base and ta-da! Tiny bubbles..

Swapped plugs.. leak gone. Tomorrow I'll fire it up with the new trimmed and balanced 4x4.5 and see how it behaves. These Profis are pretty trouble-free.. prolly a simple dum dum like that. Hope so, like to fly it some more this season. Haven't accomplished more than fiddling with it so far this year.

On all my engines I put some engine oil on the threads helps seal things up of course I wish every small engine had turbo plugs instead.

I think the Profi uses the Nelson plugs. They are pretty much the same as the turbo style. The old TD .049 would loosen the plug on a good smoking fast run.

I have a turbo plug head for it as well.. haven't used turbo plugs before.

They come in more heat ranges, if you want to experiment, or the motor is throttled.

I have handlaunched the Toucan...
Within 15 seconds of MJD firing it up, he gave me the 'nod' and it squirted out of my hands...
Straight and level, then 45 deg up, then vertical, accelerating all the way...
WOW ! I think humid weather hindered a 'great run'.
That engine is awesome ! MJD can fly the Toucan to a WR I think...
Right conditions/props/ fuel/ Nerves ! ! !

After I fixed the leaky plug issue mentioned above, it ran out a 20cc bladder like a bear. And unlike before, it can be needled rich without drowning.

I believe Sunday will be Virus day, forecast Saturday is lousy. I'll be at the hangar Saturday afternoon, we'll ground run it there under the doors if raining. Also have to put together the release platform. Using a glider tow release (full scale) and a pulley/ripcord.

Wow - OLD thread!!! Man I take my freaking time getting around to things.. Plus, I haven't really been hanging on RCU for a while, too much time reading and posting instead of doing useful things I guess.

But anyhow.. UPDATE: took the "Screamin Toucan" to the Fall SMALL fly-in earlier this month - flew it about a dozen times, and got a good Doppler pass on the iPhone with the model passing maybe 6-8 feet directly overhead the camera.

Wav-O-Scope says... 37k, and 164mph! That's way faster than I hoped, but yessir it is pretty intense in the air. SIG Champion 10%, CF 4x4.5 prop, and no cowling.. there might be more to go.

Now that it is on crankcase pressure, the engine runs are really steady and pretty much "fuel and go" now.
