For high temperature resins, check out Cotronics, but metallic onstruction, stainless steel generally preferred, still rules for PJ's. No epoxy will stand up to PJ tailpipe temps.
Dark red to cherry red:
650-750° C
1202-1382° F
Cherry red to bright cherry red:
750-800° C
1382-1472° F
Bright cherry red to orange:
800-900° C
1472-1652° F
People have measured temps in the tailpipe of 650C or so, but that temperature is moderated by the constant influx of ambient air during the intake cycle. The walls are subjected to much worse abuse, some PJ people figure up to 1000 C. They certainly heat to the orange and beyond point pretty quick.

Nice work Tim... Looks just like the one AJ did a couple of years ago...
I have a blueprint for a header and for the pipe if you need it. Just let me know.

matchless,
Thanks Bro!!! Don't forget you already gave me the hook up I really owe it to you and AJC. You because you made the pipe for your Zeus. That was really what I was going to try to put together. The thought of brazing scared me alittle plus I didn't have a torch yet. So I then remembered AJC's thread where he made the pipe using CF roving. He made it look easier and when I found that the CF sleeve was pretty cheap and would leave a nice finish I thought gees I guess that is how the big boys do it so what the heck!

Tim

Cowboy88, if you got the head for it, you can design one from www.mh-aerotools.de
Look for Javapipe
Or you can buy one of my cheap no-good russian engines for the pipe. That's what Tim used for his mold.

Patrick,
Martin's JavaPipe is pretty easy to use..as long as you know the info to plug into it The hardest part for me was the exhaust port area and the exhaust temp. I had a degree wheel I made a couple years ago on a CD.
Cowboy,
Go to the AMA's site and in the archives dig up the 1981 article on making a 1/2a pipe is was around the April/May issue and spread across a few issues. In it there is a plan for making one out of sheet aluminum. The dimensions will get you started.

Patrick,
Ok so I am straight on this with you. What I found was the layout of a degree wheel...you know the markings and numbers and all. It was off some motorcycle website(again you gotta love the net). What I did was downsized it to fit on a CD-R blank. So I printed it onto sticker paper and cut it out and slapped it onto the CD. Works like a charm when I need to degree an engine for whatever reason. I just mount it between the spinner backplate and nose cone, make a little pointer out of some music wire and mount it and BINGO! I didn't see where the exhaust temp really changed the final design much. What little I know about pipes is just by looking at the products on the shelfs already and for any given engine there is a bunch of different sizes. Like mine the front pipe is about 1/2 inch shorter than the design from out of the MA mag. So I figure I'll just make up for it in header length. Overall the cones are the same size though.
You ever get around to playing with your Fly Quiet Pipe yet?

Nope, haven't ran an engine in a couple of weeks! It's funny how the .09 pipe matches so closely...
The collector in that article looks like an elegant solution to the "Cox header" problem.

RE: 1/2a Carbon Fiber Tuned Pipe DIY
OK so I had the time yesterday to build a test rig for the pipe. I mounted up my new unrun( pre-Revlite) Norvel AME .049 and set up a tank. I then went looking for my electric starter and battery pack....well I guess in all of my moving last summer I must have tosed it out thinking I would never need to use it again[:@] So I spend the better part of an hour hand starting a new NORVEL ....humm fun! So I finally get the dirty little SOB running and ran a couple tanks through it to do alittle break in on it. At first I tried to start it with an APC 4.5x4 prop and it just would pop..then I mounted a Cox 6x3 and it came to life. I guess it needed the little heavier prop for some flywheel effect . After a couple tanks with it I remounted the 4.5x4 and posted a run of 21,500rpm. As for fuel well it was a mix of 3 or 4 different bottles of fuel that were almost gone so I mixed them together! I mounted my pipe using a little bracket I made and then did alittle tweking to where I thought I could hear the highest speed with my ears and then broke the tach out and posted a run of 23,700rpm so the was a 2,200rpm increase that made me more than happy so I called it it for the day as the wife needed me inside[]. I would think that in stock form the AME would pull alittle more than 21,500rpm but with it still being new I am sure it needs some run time still and some better fuel but at least I have a starting point.

RE: 1/2a Carbon Fiber Tuned Pipe DIY
My ADHD got the best of me and I have projects all over the place. I have the little pipe on my "projects to do more with" list and hope to revisit it here in the next couple of weeks.
