Dave, I think you have created a cult! Does the 1st one that get a SS tatoo become the leader?

I got most of the big pieces put together tonight. The wing ha;ves are built and joined and the fuse is basically framed up with the fins glued in place. Maybe pictures tomorrow. Very nice kit. I think I'm mildly retarded and its coming out very straight.

What are you using as a filler/primer?

I sealed the wood with two coats of clear dope, then two coats of butyrate white primer and used glazing compound to fill any low spots.

Looks great. I have to find some dope for this project. I've been meaning to try it. Wow, that sounded bad. I'll be searching for a dope and fabric tutorial when I get the building and sanding finished.

I did not print the top pieces template in landscape mode and cut 2ea of all the parts. It does not work well that way.

Well, the wife has had me busy cleaning the garage for the last two days so progress has been slow. For those of you mounting an Norvel .061 or an AP Wasp you will be losing some of the front semi-cowl for the muffler and the throttle arm. I am still concidering removing it completely but I will trim it first and see what is left. Here are some progress pics.

Looking great, Mr67Stang. I'm probably going to mount a c/l AME .061 at a 45° angle on mine. I'm pretty sure a throttle arm will clear the cheek mounted that way, too. I still think you should use at least a little dihedral.

Yes I have been talked into the dihedral. I will likely reduce it just for fun and comparison purposes. It makes sense... even a P-51 has dihedral right, You know the whole low wing pedulum thing.

You guys are sooo much farther than I am. I just got all the pieces cut out and my shopping done for the build. I'm hoping to start tonight, and get the 1st half of the wing put together.

Keep the pics coming. I'll make sure to take a bunch of pictures of mine taking shape as well.

It's not a race. Take your time and enjoy building it. And unless Dave ends up marketting this kit nationwide you will have a very unique plane that people will stop to watch.

Alright here is my dihedral shot. 1/2 inch under each wing. The epoxy is set and short of a razor saw and a bew center section it won't change

As I'm watching this thread grow, I've come up with a few questions.

How are you guys accessing the battery and tank area?

When are you guys adding the sheeting on the bottom?

rv7driver, great job on the top sheeting! Looking good.

The bottom sheeting can go on as soon as you get the pushrod(s) installed.

You can use any method you want for the hatch; small wood screws, for example. Here's the method I used on both of mine and it has worked flawlessly so far. The small dowel fits into a hole in the firewall. The back is held down with a small rubber band. It is quick and easy to open at the field, and there's no screw to lose in the grass.

Very cool Dave,

That one will work really well for me, since mine will be electric.

That dihedral looks just about right for a pattern style plane and should be a good plane for spins if you'll be using a rudder.

Well, I know how 1" of dihedral flies, but you all have me curious, now. I'm putting in 5/8" under each tip to split the difference between the two of you. That way I can make a direct comparison to my first wing.

Dave thanks a lot, could only find a harder 3/32 for the top sheet,so windexed it to death!!! it worked. like the hatch will be using that method!! Two Questions: the glazing compond you used, is it the same stuff you get in the paint section of home Depot or lowe's? what type of paint are you using, I have to remind my self Weight, weight! been a while since I built a 1/2. and I'm loving every minute of it

thanks Pete

Pete, I bought a big tube of lacquer glazing putty at NAPA. It's amazingly light when it dries. It dries extremely fast and is a dream to sand. It feathers better than any type of wood filler I've ever used.

I'm using Brodak dope on the fuse. The tail and wing will be covered with Worldtex from Horizon. It's great stuff.

I built my hatch a little different. It will take longer to get to but I wont lose anything to a fuel rotted ruber band

Lookin' good, Stang. Is that a 2oz tank? You're going to get 20min flights!

I will probably make a Fuji tank:

Shh!!![sm=47_47.gif] That's my secret for the longest duration flight contest. No sometimes I like to just keep flying. Remember my Cloud Ranger with the OS .10 LA? It has a4 oz. tank never got 20 min out of her but a good 12 or so at WOT most of the flight. I run em a lil on the rich side because I can't afford a smoke system
