Who all flew today? 01/01/10
Happy new year everybody!
So, who got out and flew today? I sure did. Even though it was wet, cold (36 deg. F) and gusty, I just had to. Got three flights in of my flying wing (from the "Flying Wing wing" thread) before my new glasses started driving me bonkers and the cold set in. Fun stuff though....
My wife has a belief that how you spend the very first day of the year will be typical of the rest of the year, so of course I had to fly!

We allways have a big time on new years day. We call it our chilly chili fly in. There must have been 12 different types of chili, not to mention the flight line was packed, even at 38-40 degrees! I get out something i dont usually fly all year & dust it off. This year i flew my Senior Kadet. Didnt have my Jr Falcon flight ready[]...Gene

You lucky dog! lol
It was snowing and blowing all day here , so I spent the day building my modified version of the clancy aviation ladybug. ( I love the mini/micro sized planes)
I hope to fly her sunday afternoon if the weather co-operates lol
Now , I have to check out your flying wing , I have always wanted one of those.

I sure would have liked to go flying today, but it started raining before sunrise and did not stop until mid afternoon plus the wind has been blowing hard all day. Now the weather gurus say we will have several mornings of below freezing temps. I am in Florida. This is suppose to be "The Sunshine State". What gives? Maybe it will be flyable by midweek.

I flew yesterday and today...(sounds like the name of a Beatles album )
Shooting touch and go's (or is that goes? ) on the snow with my float plane...a Gee Bee models Sea Hawk w/ a TT .42GP
Weather was in the low 30's, little bit of a breeze and a light sugar snow comming down...not bad for this time of year.

Seven below here in Omaha... so I may pull out a hand launch glider for one flight. Too cold for the castor to stay in suspension in my Fox fuel.....

Posted this on another thread yesterday and added here today...
I flew a couple of small electric planes today at our club field in Sidney, Maine. We are in the beginning stages of a big snow storm so this was my only chance. Armed with a shovel to dig out a parking spot, layered clothing and a hooded parka, fingerless knit gloves with palm grip surface from LL Bean hunting supplies and a transmitter mitt I headed to the KVMA field. It was 27 degrees with a North wind blowing 5 or 6 knots gusting to 10 or 15 knots down the runway and light snow falling. The access road was plowed, but the parking lot was not (hence the shovel). Both planes were assembled and the batteries charged before I left so all I had to do was install the battery and walk through the snow to the flightline with my transmiiter in the mitt. It was fun, although a little too windy at times, with my Hobby-Lobby Sunday on Du-Bro mini skis (with a brand new Spektrum radio system) and E-Flite Taylorcraft on foam floats. The Sunday flew great and lifts off very quickly so the skis worked great in the slightly sticky fresh snow cover. The only problem I had was the dim light from the overcast and the all white airplane! Luckily the black spinner and black skis stood out and I kept it in close. So, color, or more important contrasting colors are important too. I had my hands full with the Taylorcraft though as my battery slid back on take-off making it tail heavy and a real bear to handle in the swirling gusty wind. I did manage to get it back on the ground and repositioned the battery and the next flight was much more manageable.
Hope you all had good First day flights.

I didn't, but other members of my club (Big Sky Flyers) were going out to fly. -30°C. Brrr. I also prefer to build. That's why we have the indoor flying at the Golf Dome .

We at Fox Valley Aero Club in St. Charles, IL have an annual New Year's Day "Frozen Fingers" fun fly. It was 8 deg. F yesterday. We had 10 guys who flew and another 15-20 who came out to watch. We had the fire pit going and with the sun, it didn't feel as cold as it was.

Yeah, my guess the Chicagoland Barstomers might have had a few guys out, but man, it's cold out. If my hands don't function because they're cold, it's hard to enjoy myself. I really should try to find the indoor sites. Use to love Indoor Free Flight, but don't know where or when they fly. Yes, it is a good time to spend down at the building board.
