Default dazed and confused

Hello

I am new to the RC world. I recently purchased a Savage XS Flux off ebay. It came with a hobbywing SC8 ESC and a Gens Ace 5000m 50C 2S Lipo. So the truck has no motor. I also was given a couple of motors from a friend who has RC cars (One of those know it all types, but then nothing works out right)

Hobbywing EZRun 3656 4700kv
Hobbywing EZRun 4065 2700kv
vector 4000 (person I got the truck from on ebay said to not use this motor)

I have been reading and getting confused as to which motor and what gearing I should put into this truck.

I plan on doing some jumping and climbing hills and racing iit around the track where my kid rides his dirt bike

You need a 550 (540 vs 550 is a motor type and refers to the length of the can, rather than the diameter. Basically, longer=more torque) to get the best out of that truck. 540s (as those you describe) will work, but they will overheat unless geared very conservatively.

If you're looking for a cheap option, try this 550...

http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/s...550_size_.html

Personally, I would be putting this motor in it...

http://www.amainhobbies.com/product_...s-Motor-3800kV

It's a 540, but its a 4-pole, so it make a lot more torque than a 2-pole 540 (most 540s/550s are two-pole unless otherwise specified, and a 4 pole 540 is every bit as strong (if not more so) as a 2-pole 550). All 1/8th type 42mm diameter motors are 4 pole or more, just for reference, though that isn't relevant to you.

Not altogether sure that the longer 550 size motors will fit in the space allocated for a motor on the xs,

I do agree with foxy on the castle 1410 3800kv motor, fantastic all round motor,

I've tried a couple different motors in my xs,

a toro 3650 3900kv was pretty close to the performance of the castle 3800kv but it would overheat towards the end of a 5200mah 2s lipo,

Now running the castle 3800kv motor and the overheating issues are no longer an issue,

Power and speed are just right for the truck,

so the:

ezrun 4065 is4 pole, 65mm lengthand will not fit< spec
ezrun 3656 is 4 pole, 56mm length< spec
vector 4000 is 4 pole, 56mm length< spec

Can not afford the castle and the turnigy I think will not fit with the cable plugged into it

This leads me too go with the 3656, so what gearing should I do

Sorry guys, I was told that most 550s fitted when I looked into buying one. I don't see why the one I linked wouldn't fit (used without sensor), is it a length thing?

I think the 4065 will be too big diameter-wise, the 3656 looks good.

You only have so much room unless you cut some plastic out.

I see, so 56mm is your lot, that does rule out a lot of 550s...

ok, it appears the pinion is 28t and the idler is 60t

Is that ok for this setup, I do not want problems

I would go for a lower kv version of the motor (the lowest, 3400kv if you plan to occasionally run 3S, which you will surely want to do, it makes the truck a real handful), but yeh, looks like a solid setup, you certainly shouldn't have any problems on 2S.

EDIT: Now that I think about it, I heard changing the pinions is a real pain in the ass, so maybe if you plan to run mostly 2S go for a mid range kv motor, not the lowest. If you plan to run mostly 3S, then get the lowest.

Yes they are a lot of work to change, Just an FYI they did not loctite the grub screw at the factory and mine and a lot of others had the pinion fall off...
