RE: Dale's PTI Goliath Build Thread... 11.17.07 update-late edition
I ordered some PTI swaybars, as well as some low profile tires to test the truck onroad. I plan to run on and off road and really detail the kits performance. The PTI rep told me that they rip these things around the parking lot when the prep them for street running.
I agree on the solid axle mini. Exactly why I bought it. I am going to have a blast with this thing.

I will definitely jump it. I have run a number of solid axle trucks over the years and it's always fun to jump them.

Muggy hasn't been run yet... I bought it used and it has been waiting in the wings for a while. I did get some 17mm adapters for it and I picked up the radio gear I will use for it too. I plan on running it soon. If it's like any of my other Losi's I will love it. You can see a pic of the Muggy on my profile if you click my name.

RE: Dale's PTI Goliath Build Thread... 11.17.07 update-late edition
Wheels/Tires. I kind of jumped ahead in the steps because I felt like mounting the tires. I found out some good stuff here. First off the wheels are RPM Starz so you know they are good sturdy wheels. Secondly I found the Goliath uses Associated T4 rear wheels (3/16" axles) all around on the truck! That opens the wheel and tire selection up to unlimited possibility. That is really cool. I have already ordered a set of wheels and tires, I will go more into that in a sec. To top it off, the tires are none other then IMEX Claw Dawgs which for scale purposes highly resemble a Mickey Thompson Competition Claws. They will be a good all around tire for sure.
So, wheels and tires x 4.
Next, time to mount up. HINT!!! The wheels do not have holes drilled into them. When I mounted the first tire, it felt like a balloon and it literally held some air pressure when I compressed it. That will make for a super bouncy ride. Take my advice and drill some holes into the wheels so the setup can breathe. It will make handling a lot more predictable and not as spongy. Note where I drilled holes. On opposite sides behind the face of the wheel, closer to the center. I wouldn't even try to run the truck without doing this step. The manual doesn't mention it, but my experience tells me it has to be done.
Next mount all 4 up. Don't forget that the tires are directional, so two will be directional one way and two will be directional the other way. This way when they go on the truck, the tread is all pointing forwards on all of the tires.
Finally, glue them and you are done.
FYI, this is the wheel and tire set that I chose for street/performance running... This is going to be FUN!

Body mounts are done... It's getting close. I couldn't help but cut the holes in the body and mount it. I am posting a teaser pic for those looking for instant gratification.
Rear mounts
Front mounts
Teaser pic... It looks friggen awesome... Wow. You guys will like it when it's done.

I don't think the truck would be super stable or handle high speed well. It does take a standard 540 size can though, so you could put as hot of a motor in it as you wanted to. I have never tested the drivetrain either so I am not sure if it could take a low turn mod motor. Most people make Goliath trucks into low speed crawlers with high turn lathe motors for torque. They usually don't go the other way.

RE: Dale's PTI Goliath Build Thread... 11.17.07 update-late edition
Ok, finally a little more work...
Time to build shocks. Their directions were good. They did provide shock oil but I went ahead and used some 30wt Losi oil. I will spare you the details of building shocks, we have all done them before and they aren't fun. Just the assembled shafts and pistons and then completed assemblies. I think they might be the same shocks that HPI use on their Rush and MT, but I am not sure. They might just look alike. They are 1/10 scale shocks though with 3mm shafts. No 1/18 scale shocks here.
Completed.
Time to get the electronics in. I started by soldering the caps onto the motor provided with the Duratrax ESC. They are supposed to cut down on RF interference. No reason not to install them while it's easy.
Then it's time to figure out where the ESC goes. I just put it between the front body mounts right in front of the motor.
Then I cut the bullet connectors off the ESC and soldered the leads straight to the motor. Screw the motor down and then put the pinion on. It is a tight fit in there, just to warn you. I was having trouble getting the motor screws started through the mount because I couldn't get the motor flush to the motor plate right. The motor pushes right against the crossmember. I took my time though and it turned out great. Don't forget threadlock on motor screws and pinion screw.
We are getting close now... Just the receiver, wire routing and shock mounting and the truck will be ready to go.

RE: Dale's PTI Goliath Build Thread... 11.17.07 update-late edition
Ahhh, the parts came in that I was waiting for. I picked up the optional ball bearing setup for the cantilevers. The stock setup is a set of bushings. The ball bearings will insure that the travel is as smooth as possible. PTI Part # 20352.
Pic of the bearing in cantilever.
Cantilever and linkage assembled on the truck. Threadlock on the cantilever chassis and linkage fasteners (any metal to metal)
Then it's time to mount the shocks up. Pic of a single, and then the truck in it's entirety.
Receiver, wiring is all that's left. Then it's time to charge the pack and go for a spin!

1/18 scale, but it's a pretty big 1/18 scale. I am going to take pictures of it next to 1/10, 1/18 and 1/8 scale stuff so you can get a good idea of the size.

Ok, build is done. Truck is together and batteries are charging as I type this. The truck turned out great. I am very happy with it. Routing the servo and ESC wires towards the back was a little tricky. I just routed them straight down the chassis rail with some zip ties. Here it is!

Articulation pics... This thing has some good articulation for sure. Each HPI nubz tire is 2.7", so articulation is right around 5.5".

Now it's time to figure out the scale... First, I put the Goliath next to my 1/18 scale Mini Quake. The Mini Quake is pretty standard size for a 1/18 MT. This thing is quite a bit bigger.
