RE: engine upgrade for mg16?
DG you can throw a different engine in it. It needs to be a slide carb and standard crank with a prop washer. CEN has an .18 with the proper set up and the os .18 will work. You will need a flywheel kit CEN part number MG095 no matter which on you choose.
Now i have been looking into this also for a bit. The OS engine is a taller engine and the head will stick out of the roof of the body. Yes the OS.15 would be better for it. But good luck finding one with a slide carb. If you are good with RCs you can make a pivot to use a rotory carb. I am going to try to make one this weekend for all to see. Then carb would not matter.
Exhaust wise on the .18 you would need to open it up some other wise it may drown out the .18 at idle and or low speeds. It would be a heck of a power house though. I am looking at .12 engines right now. I am told for my RC10gt a good .12 would be better than the .15 stock engine. Considering the MG16 has the same displacement size engine of my GT and is lighter i bet a good .12 would work well also.
the only real thing holding this truck back is the exhaust. I had a NTC3 single chamber pipe on this stock engine and it really woke it up. Digout on this forum did the .18 and the NTC3 pipe on his. The pipe idea i got from him before i went with what i have now.

I was wondering if the OFNA/HOBAO Hyper 12 would fit

Eddy, the crank shaft on that one will not be long enough unless you do some fancy modding of flywheel and CBs. It really needs to have a standard crank to fit the best with CENs hop up flywheel.
I know Digout used a SG crank .18 with TT flywheel and i believe Ofna P10 CB. So it has been done but would need extra modding to make happen.

I'd say drop the money on a nt18mt... I have the electric version and its a great little truck. Amazing quality and it handles really well out of the box!

I just bought an O.S 12TG-X with the rotary carb, should be a direct fit. I've fried the CEN engine, for some reason everytime i got it running good it would overheat, then when i leaned it out even a tiny bit it ran too rich and too slow.

let us know how you get the rotary carb and rear exhaust set up in the MG16. I had thought about it and tried to get a rotary bell crank to fit and ran out of time. I have a AE .18 pro i could throw in mine but the CEN engine still runs strong.

RE: engine upgrade for mg16?
not sure what part of similar you are talking about, the rotory carb or slide carb?
I tried to make a rotory carb bell crank for my MG and kept running into interferences issues. Not sure, but will the stock carb fit the OS .12? Sometimes they will.
If i can sell My GT as a roller i will have a .18 for my MG and it is rotory carb. I will be forced then to come up with something...

RE: engine upgrade for mg16?
My engine came in the mail today, looks like everything is the same size including the thread on the stock carb I guess thats gonna be the easy way of doing it then, to put the stock carb on the O.S engine, but you should see the difference in diameter of the carb opening! its almost twice the diameter of the stock, the exhaust will be the tricky part I think mods to the body will be in order... I'll keep u posted.

With a smaller carb opening, you are not going to get the full potential out of that engine.
Keep us posted though. Did the crank shaft come with the prop washer the flywheel presses against?

RE: engine upgrade for mg16?
I had a Xray NT18MT a while back and it was a great little truck and good quality but no way as pokey as the MG16.I'm a bit of a mini freak and have the Acme NB16T which is not as good quality as the Xray but the little .06 Go engine thats in this is similar to the NT18 and just as powerful cos the Acme is 1/16 and is the same or very near speed wise. The MG16 is the best mini i've owned and I have 2,one for the wife and the one i've just modded that i got not long ago.The mods that Muck did make an already fun little truck a lot better.
To the guy who's fried his engine,my engine runs hot but not to a point of damage, the tuning scale on the smaller engines is very narrow and I would advise tuning in 1/16 increments. When I do the spit test on the cooling head at the end of a run it bubbles away in 2-3 seconds and thats about right as far as that not so accurate test goes but the temp of the the glow plug can be 260F and it never does any harm as its running still with a clear strong blue smoke trail. The top of the piston is still shiny and not brown with heat as they tend to go after running lean and the liner is spotless,it still has awesome compression. What i'm really trying to say is that the rule of 220-250F being safe isn't necessarily always the case, especially in the small, high revving engines...
