RE: any cheaper way to go brushless?
I am going to pull the trigger on this combo - very cheap, probably 80 - 90% the power of a mamba system.

http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idproduct=4313
For a few dollers more you can get a higher power ESC for future motor upgrades:
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idproduct=4314
Be warned - both ESCs are forward only - no reverse.

WOW...30$usd for brushless goodness...wonder what their intl shipping rates are like.
Any suggestions for a half decent esc with reverse? I think I've seen the Tazer sold for 45$AUD [40$USD] which isn;t too bad.

That's not that good - it's the same width, but shorter. So expect far less torque and power.
I'd recommend this one
http://www.hobbycity.com/hobbycity/s...idProduct=4198
It's "only" 4400kv, but it's 24mm, vs the 20mm mamba - so expect more torque - a larger pinion would work well and give speed. I'm using the 4040kv on my mini-t.

If you are considering spending $30 on one of those cheap systems, why not save a little and buy a higher quality, more programmable, well tested ESC and motor? My mamba 25 and 5400 motor send my 18t flying, and I have had the same motor and esc for two years now. Also, (although I luckily have not had to deal with them) I hear that Castle Creations has very good customer support.
If you do buy one of the cheaper systems, keep us posted on how they perform.
Good luck!
EDIT: I just looked closely at the site, they have a free shipping deal going on as well!

You can't beat the price for those ESC/motors....I wouldn't use a plane ESC in a car for more reasons then just no reverse. Castle Creations site is having a %25 off everything on there site sale in march. You can still pick up the 4200 for $20 now and get the ESC in march...Mamba 4200 package for $87.50. Or you can wait till March and get the 5400/6800 for $105.

RE: any cheaper way to go brushless?
yes but thoes brushless motors are for only doing one speed and low power.
the model grade ones have neodynium magnets whitch are ULTRA strong!!!!!!
if you rip apart a HD there is one large silver one in there, if you stick that to the fridge you will NEVER get it off!!!
i am thinking about going brushless with my mini baja (even though i havent got it yet) one day mamba 4400kv[8D]

The escs listed at hobbycity are only 18 amp airplane esc's. I wouldn't think those would be pwoerful enough. Not to mention proportioinal braking, so either full brakes or no brakes, no good!

where u get that idea. they use the same magnets, lol. people put kb motors in boats(same size as the mamba max) but out perform them. get you facts staight young grasshopper. lol. Now the esc is no where near as good as the mamba but l@@K at the price

no-no - the comparison was in response to CDROM brushless motors from poster jinda - not the kb!

I bought a 30 amp 1/18 scale car brushless controller and motor off ebay for around 60 - 65 shipped. It was a no-name chinese knock-off but it worked. I also say EBay.

Compared to alot of options out there, 4400kv may sound a bit slow. I am running a 4500kvair plane out runner in my RC18 clone and happy with the speed. So if the price is right a 4400kv motor would not be a bad option either.
