I just got my Ofna Jammin CRT.5 1/12 truggy Pro kit, and thought I'd do a build thread! It comes mostly assembled, but I wanted to check inside the diffs for fluid, look things over, and all that fun stuff - so I figured a build thread with pics would be interesting to anyone curious about this little truggy.
I also will be doing an electric conversion on it, so that should prove interesting as well. Right when I opened the box is when I noticed the assembly - I initially thought this being a kit, it would all be in pieces. Not so. My first impression was "wow, that's a lot of other parts this comes with", along with "wow, that's yellow". Straight away I've decided to chuck the wheels and wing at some point - but for now they'll stay until I decide the wheels I want, and color scheme (although likely the wing will be replaced with a black one). I was also happy to notice hex hardware throughout - very nice! |

You'll notice that the kit came with the chassis you see, along with a longer optional chassis (and supporting parts). More on that later, but I've decided from the start to move things over to the longer chassis. This will give more room for my electric stuff, and I want to pull things apart to look anyway, so I might as well do it as I move.
Here's another shot of some of the hex hardware, and the 12 mm hexes that drive the wheels. Plastic is fine, but I've got some spare Tamiya aluminum clamping ones, so I'll be switching those out. |

On to the rear diff! The diffs are gear diffs, sealed and fluid filled. I topped them off a bit before reassembly. Notice the shielded bearings - the kit has shielded bearings throughout. Very nice.
Also notice the interesting teeth on the ring gear. I don't know why it's different than your standard ring gear, but it looks spiffy. |

While I was at it, I took a few closer pics of the rear suspension. I like how it uses hex screws to capture the hinge pins, the CVDs it comes with, the sway bars, and just the overall solid feel to this kit. I'm impressed so far.

Now the rear assembly is put back together, so I took a few more pics. Some didn't turn out quite as well as others. Oh well.

Last thing I did tonight was mount the rear assembly onto the extended chassis, I've included a pic of that. Interestingly, the longer chassis requires that the rear brace be moved to the other side of the centerline compared to the shorter chassis. Of course, Ofna supplied the part for you to do that, so no worries.
I've also included a pic of the 2 chassis together as they stand now, so you can see the length difference. Not major, but noticeable. |

its a damn sexy kit :D
dunno why they even include the short chassis anymore as it requires a small servo that IMO would die in this thing remember when I used a 1/10th non MG servo, and the truck destroyed it in 2 mins. It always astounds me how ofna sells the kit for under $100 I don't think there is one other RC manufacturer that sells anything even remotely comparable durability or quality wise priced anywhere remotely near it. |

dang you eman, now i want one. and i can actually afford it too. i priced it out as a nitro *gasp*. $250 and change plus when i signed up just now, they gave me a 25% off coupon! that means it's under $200 for everything but radio gear, fuel, fuel line and batteries. i have all that other stuff!

SyCo - I agree. It's a very nice quality kit, excellent price. Thanks for the heads up on it too, you got me started. It's weird to me too that they include both chassis and the "conversion" kit (parts, etc) to install on the longer one. Guess what's going on ebay when I'm done? :) But I'm guessing there are a hundred others doing the same thing.
Cumquat - nice coupon! I got one too when I registered with Ofna, but it didn't apply to sale items like this kit. Ah well. Later I'll be updating/posting links to the e-conversion items (part numbers straight from SyCo's info) so all that info is contained here too. One other side note - when I was messing with the diff, I tried taking the drive cups out just to see how it fits together, and I couldn't pull it from the ring gear (or on the other side, from the diff housing). I pulled pretty firmly, but no go. I left it at that, since I didn't HAVE to pull them off. They must be in there tight! |

i'm not 100% it's applicable to the kit, but it will be for the engine and whatnot. at very least it'll cover shipping.

Also trying to decide what tire to go with. I want black wheels, so the stock wheels/tires won't do. I'm thinking something a little bigger too. Badlands? Mashers? Trenchers? Dirt Hawgs? Hmm.
Won't be racing, just bashing around in whatever I can find. I'm guessing the 2.8s would be too big, so maybe 2.2s. |

For wheels and tires, I think I'm going to go with axial beadlocks (2.2s) and a set of Summit 1/16 tires. Not sure how great the gray ring will look though, so I'm still mulling it over a bit:

just in case you didnt notice, those bead locks are narrower than normal 2.2 rims. normal rims are 2" wide, those are 1.4". and i'd go with mashers personally. because, well, why not? :):D

Hmm, thanks for the heads up, better look into that width thing. I thought the 2.2s that came with the kit were about 1.4 inches wide, perhaps I measured wrong...? Or wrote it wrong. Will have to check tonight.

Also use the brace that comes on that parts tree it gives the esc tray something to mount on to make it more secure Funny thing is I don't understand why ofna has no electric chassis for it cause that brace doesn't fit the SCRT10 at all, and seems to be made to fit the crt.5 only. |

So if those Axial beadlocks are too narrow, does anybody make a 2.2" beadlock that is the proper width (around 2") for that tire? I'm just not seeing a lot for 2.2 beadlocks. Maybe I go the gluing route... |

not that i have found, and i have looked quite a bit. those will work, they'll just make the sidewalls angle inward a bit and will make the tires balloon a bit more. as i rrecall, the closest to full width i found was something like 1.8", but those were aluminum wheels made by rc4wd and they cost something like $110 for the set. on the bright side though, they will never need replaced.

Looks like the standard width for 2.2" wheels seems to be in the 1.4 inch range after all. The tires tend to be near the 2" width mark (depending on the tire), so I really don't think I'll have a problem with those, or other 1.4 wide wheels. I've measured my 1/10 tires and wheels at home, looked up B4 wheel widths, you name it. 1.4 seems to be the average. Not sure where you're seeing 2" wide wheels for a standard 2.2 diameter wheel.
In fact, the stock 1/16 summit wheel is just about 1.4" wide, with those exact tires I linked to (also 1/16 summit tires), so it's fine. Now I just need to decide if I like the axials with that gray ring or not. |

So next I decided to transfer the center diff to the new chassis plate. Here's a pic of the diff as it comes, before I removed the braking material we won't need because of the electric conversion (pads, discs, etc). I did notice that even the parts that rotate to engage the brakes were using shielded bearings. Nice!
The last pic is of the center diff installed, but later you'll see that I'll swap out one of the side diff mounts with the electric motor mount, and the top brace with a box to house the Rx. |
