Hi, new here, question about Micros!

Hi everyone,

Really great to be here. I just want to ask a question, or start a bit of dialogue about Micro RCs before I buy one. Usually, I always do research beforehand, and for years and years forums have ALWAYS proven to be amazing and helpful.

Basically, I used to be a hobbyist with a couple big ticket Traxxas models, about 300 years ago now haha... but now after so long I don't remember much about it, and really never looked elsewhere other than Traxxas because I was just focused on speed. Anyway, I'm really excited to get a Micro RC, 1/18th scale.

Would you mind please offering some direction on which model to buy... considering the following:
  1. I don't want to spend over $300 with Car/Engine/Upgraded multi-cell battery/Replacement tires
  2. I'd love a brushless engine
  3. I won't be doing any climbing of any sort, sure they'll be a few small ramps and running off the yard into the street, but no mud, water, or extremely severe terrain
  4. I don't want something PURELY about speed, and I don't want something PURELY about rock-crawling... something that can manage both adequately but still have fun at wide-open-throttle would be awesome
That's about it... I'm really looking forward to some suggestions on a dependable and quality micro-rc car. LASTLY, which engine should I get, to swap out for an upgrade to the speed?

THANK YOU ALL! :)

PS:I've been looking a lot at Losi and Associated Qualifier

There's only one car that really fits the criteria, and it is a beauty, the Traxxas mini-summit. Normally, it would be quite a bit over your budget, but its on Tower Hobbies in the flash sale right now. I own one of its siblings, the mini Revo. With the discount code 011FT which gives $40 off orders of $300 or more, it gets under your budget. The motor does not need replacing, the car has a good brushless system, there are many upgrades available if you feel like doing some mods, but its good out of the box and does exactly what you asked for.

THANK YOU. I also get to stick with Traxxas, and save money win/win! I'm literally going to buy this today.

Hi again,

I have the Summit in my shopping cart... and then I came across the 1/16th E-Revo... and it got me to thinking with what appears to be the same main features and the "cooler" looking body-shell I was going for - why not the e-Revo here: http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...amp;I=LWE326**

Is there something I'm missing, if so, please let me know... I'll buy one or the other as soon as Ihave it figured out :)

the difference in the 2 is a few pieces(longer rocker links and body mount posts if I remember right), the body, and tires
they are the same exact chassis
pick whichever you like the look of better

Be prepared to sink some cash into whichever you get as out of the box at bare minimal you will need new springs as traxxas's suck. And odering the replacement springs will allow you to use the coupon foxy said :D
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXXKW3&P=7 rear springs
http://www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin...?&I=LXCAVD&P=7 front

And if you plan on jumping I'd say get a chassis brace as the chassis is almost paper thin at 2 points
I got this one (have to buy front and rear separate)
Rear http://thetoyz.com/Traxxas/Mini-1-16...he-Toyz/14684/
Front http://thetoyz.com/Traxxas/Mini-1-16...he-Toyz/14682/
It was kind of a pain for me to install as I have a larger then stock motor and had to grind my chassis down a bit to make the stuff fit, but if I was using the stock motor I wouldn't have had an issue.

Thanks SyCo - that's fine with me, once I exceed $300 and get the $40 rebate, it's like a free set of springs :) THANK YOU for all your help... I'll be ordering the 1/16 E-Revo VXL!

I own the mini revo... here're a couple of pics of mine (it's actually technically the wife's) ;)

I have quite a few upgrades on it, I would be happy to list if you'd like. Particularly the center differential and the extended rear arms really improve the handling.

The reason I recommended the Summit is because you asked to do a little crawling. The Merv won't do that. The Summit has longer travel suspension and shorter gearing (but gearing can be changed on any of them of course. I actually don't like the Merv body myself, hence the Proline Baja bug. :)

Forgot who it was, but one of our members got the summit for that reason, and was very disappointed in it as it was more flip happy then the merv due to the higher COG.

RE: Hi, new here, question about Micros!

Hey everyone!

Well the e-Revo VXL came in the mail last week, I got a chance to use it and... the antenna is broke. I was doing some research and it's supposed to have a little thin wire "thingy" up top, and my doesn't, so it only goes 10 feet before malfunctioning. I am so frustrated. With the car, springs, 4 new batteries, the crossover to run batteries parallel, and the fast charger, I've spent well over $500 for a car that goes 10 feet.

I contacted Traxxas and said since my car was BRAND NEW freshly out of the box and used for 10 minutes max... could they replace my car rather than making me pay to ship it, wait for who-knows-how-long while it was fixed, and then shipped back? They said....................... no. Classic. I've spent thousands (yes, plural) since I was a teenager, and now my first buying experience as an adult years later, is TERRIBLE.

So, I'm forced to go without my car for possibly weeks (it's already been over a week since I first let them know about the defect), and because of the manufacturer's fault, I am forced to throw more money at it via shipping, to get something fixed that should have already been right?

I have not heard from Traxxas in a little over 2 days now,I'm very disappointed.

If I read this right I'd say traxxas as in the right for that part. As you know how many people would say my car broke ship me one and I promise to ship the broke one back? Guess how many they would probably get back probably 0. On a game board someone puled that with a company they shipped a new copy of the game, and they turned around and sold the one they were supposed to ship back on ebay.

Here is a question did you try to rebind the radio?
I wish I could say how, but I have 0 experience with traxxas's current radios.

Or do this if that don't work take the take that tube off, and see if it has a little silver tip at the top of the wire. If its not there then that is the issue.

I'm an expert on Traxxas radios, so to rebind;<div>

RE: Hi, new here, question about Micros!

Dude, it happens and the amount of money you spent is irrelevant, I know plenty of people who have had it much worse, like for example to have shelled out $5000 for a 1/5th setup only to have a faulty $10 pull start. In your case,a $30 part was supplied broken (receiver if I understand correctly). Unlucky, but don't worry, it'll be fine.<div></div><div>You could have just asked them to send a receiver, though?</div>

IDontWannaGrowUp 07-24-2013 07:43 AM

RE: Hi, new here, question about Micros!

"Dude" I guess I could have requested the receiver, yes, but that's not customer service - that's supplying faulty Chinese parts on an expensive miniature toy, and then having the customer do the leg work. Plus, the best part is, it wasn't even in stock. Super awesome!

UPDATE

My e-Revo VXL arrived at Traxxas last week onMonday the 15th of July. I paid $33 to overnight it Saturday so no more time would be wasted without my brand new Revo that arrived defective.

Steve, the only person who has ever responded to any of my emails to any department, told me: "5-7 days right now for fixing cars until yours is done." That was wildly inaccurate as I come to find out Yesterday on Tuesday July 23rd, when he emailed me saying they JUST got to my car and started to look at it. Then, after he verified it was the receiver, he......... told me receivers were out of stock, with absolutely no indication if when he/or I could expect any progress of any sort. Neato!

This isn't exactly quantum physics here: You supply a broken product, customer wants is fixed or replaced in a timely manner, you botch your times by half-a-month, then fail to have the part in stock at your own headquarters to fix it, and then end the email with no "But..... here's what we can do!" Pathetic.

I guess I shouldn't have taken the leap of faith in Traxxas again... I'm not 17 anymore, but I thought it will still be a lot of fun to have something interesting to do on my rare days off in the nice weather. But, with all the prodding and legwork I've had to do just to get a few measely incomplete and delayed emails from Steve/Traxxas, I'm through with companies that import $20 overseas parts and then sell them at a 800% profit, only to leave their customers hanging in the wind - like, oh I don't know not having the one central component that makes a car work by receiving a signal in stock for example.

RE: Hi, new here, question about Micros!

Should have just bought another radio for $15 from hobby king, and said screw it to traxxas's radios :(

But god damn that is crappy of them to pull. They could go pop open a friggin RC and grab the RX out of it.

RE: Hi, new here, question about Micros!

Hey there, I have a mini erevo, which after 5 minutes of run time managed to burn it's own esc out. Lucky for me though, I bought it from my local hobby shop and they replaced the esc right infront of me in 2 minutes. But dont start getting too frustrated just yet, the problems are just beginning. Iv'e had to replace the esc, the servo, shim the diff (3 times), buy wider rims (to prevent traction rolling, right now I need to replace to front A arms, front body posts and put the ball joints back in place. But trust me after all these repairs it still worth it with a couple of Lipos.
P.S Ive only used the car for an hour Total.
