Default Surestart mounting shims

I just purchased one of Bernie's throttle setups that utilizes the stock choke tube and look forward to testing it. My other back-plate .049s are all mounted flush with the firewall without the choke tube. This led me to wonder what methods others here are using to shim the engine. So far I've considered some wood blocks drilled accordingly for the screws, some short dowel rods that are center-drilled for the screws, and maybe some plastic tubing of the proper diameter.

So what methods have you guys been using for mounting?

Tee Bee,
The ones I am using were offered by BIG AL-RC on this forum a couple of years ago and are top notch machine made hardwood. He was kind enough to offer them n/c if anyone wanted to try his handiwork. They are the BEST....
Maybe he will make some more for a price and have himself a great cottage industry.
Believe me they're that nice.....
Another Thanks to Big AL...........Steve

3/8 square hardwood works fine.

Yep the maple mounts used by the C/L folks are ideal.

If you don't have access to the mounts. laminate a couple of pieces of 3/16 ply and cut to 3/8 square.

I'll 2nd the quality and definite coolness of Big Al's standoffs! If he ever decides to make a big run I'm in for $10 or $15 worth!!

I've used 3/8 balsa, since you pretty much have to slather up the front end with epoxy anyway, because of the exhaust....Rog

Thanks, guys. I was already leaning toward wood block standoffs. Was just curious to see how others were mounting them.

We had the motor mounts for the Surestart engines moulded and they are being shipped to us today.

Black nylon. $3.95 including 6 mounting screws. Here is what they look like:

Here's what I ended up with. Cut slightly oversized from 3/8" hardwood scrap using a scroll saw, match-drilled to fit the engine, then countoured to match the backplate with a disc sander. Sealed with Z-Poxy finishing resin. Very simple project. Made an extra set for a friend while I was at it.

On a side note, I did some test runs with Bernie's throttle setup but it was too dark to use a tach and the engine needs some more break-in time. Looks promising, though.

And yes, I realize there is no needle valve in the picture. Just sayin' because if I don't one of you will. [X(]

You don't have the Grey cog part either Mr B, or did you forget to take the spring thing off?

As complex as these little devils are, I bet I can manage to get it running again.
