Default Cox 1/2A Speed Pan

I just picked one up because I think they are very cool items and someday would like to try my hand at building and flying one.

The instructions list a source of plans but wondering who's around that does this kind of thing and would be able to help me out on an internet club, website or free plans. Just looking to learn more about it, how to make the wing and the fuselage would be a nice start.

The one finished in the pictures is one that had recently been offered on auction and gives me somewhat of an example.

The red and white one looks purtty but it's clearly just something to display. The wing and tail is far too poorly shaped to fly well and the cowling is lumpy to boot.

But that same design done in clear basswood and with the pan all polished up would make a superb ceiling dust collector or the weight on one arm of a 1/2A mobile. It's really got some great looking lines to it. But it deserves to be set up with a monoline at the same time. Or at the VERY least use a grouped dual line setup with the lines buryed in the wing instead of external.

As for flying the thing I suppose.... as long as you like getting REALLY dizzy...

When I first started looking at the one for sale I was disappointed it was only a mock. Poor Space Hopper too! Succumbed to plier torture at some point in its life.

All this only spurred my drive to see a nice one to copy and still surfing around finding things.

A clear piece of basswood sounds great to me, different techniques of rigging one...but not being spun in the ground like a top but I bet I couldn't resist after it was done.
