Sailplane with an 1/2A engine
I've got an old 98" sailplane (rudder and elevator only) and would like to put a 1/2A Norvel engine on top of the wing and use it to launch it like in the "old days" when no electrics were around.
Could somebody help me out with some adivce about how to build the "tower/support" (or whatever is it called) for the engine? What parameter should I consider? Where should the propeller be? What should be the thurst angle of the engine, etc...
Thanks in advance.
Peter

RE: Sailplane with an 1/2A engine
A 1/2A engine can just get a 2m glider up. For 98" you need a .10 or .15. Sig Mfg ( sigmfg.com ) sells a power pod kit that worked well with their Riser 2m as well as the Goldberg Gentle Lady and Craft-Air Drifter II.

This has about 5 degrees upthrust when mounted to the wing. I have many hours experience with this set-up and it will work with a 76-79" glider.

I chopped about 2 1/2" off the nose off of a Gentle lady, put on a small piece of lite ply for firewall and an 0.49. Worked great. Better than the pod. Centerline thrust and all that. ;-)

RE: Sailplane with an 1/2A engine
Did the same thing with a HOB Two Tee years ago. I simply omitted the balsa nosecone and substituted a firewall (I think it was yardstick material). Initially I had a Black Widow on there, and when I could comfortably fly (yes, I taught myself how to fly RC with the thing), I replaced it with a Tee Dee. Being a combat flier, I put a bladder tank under the wing, with a looong piece of silicone tubing to the engine running outside the fuselage. It would run a long time on an ounce of fuel and get very high indeed.
