Default Wittman Tailwind W-10 Project

Would like to share some info and pics of the 1/2A size Wittman Tailwind I designed with a CAD program, built and flew recently. This is a model of the classic full size homebuilt design. It's powered by a Norvel .074 that runs great and provides great performance. Outline is mostly scale except the wingspan was stretched by 10% and uses a flat-bottom airfoil. I also simulated the windows with decals and left off the wing struts. Controls: elevator, rudder, throttle & ailerons.

What a neat little plane. It looks like you've done a really nice job too. For me, this is what the hobby is about. There's nothing more fun than scratch building and flying your own designs. Congrats on a beautiful plane.

Now we need to see some in flight pics.

Thanks for the compliment! I agree with you 100%....the entire process was enoyable and rewarding. My current project is an A-4 Skyhawk that is pusher prop driven....but it is .25 size and not 1/2A. I'll try to post some inflight pics of the Tailwind soon.

Andrew,

Hey! Nice job on the Tailwind. And a tribute to Steve Wittman who was a real talented pioneer in the full scale world. Steve had designed another plane that preceded the Tailwind by quite a few years called "Buttercup". The Buttercup was a real performer. A lot of people tried to get him to release plans for it but he never did to my knowlege. The buttercup would make a real cool sister ship to your Tailwind, .074 power would be just right. Sorry about the extra details, just got carried away....

Default What a little....

beauty!!!!

Wittman really was a great designer. Your design truly does it justice, right down to the rearward angled gear!

Great Job.

LoneRanger:

Thanks....I fly off a nice grass field behind a middle school outside my neighborhood. I live at the Spruce Creek Fly-In community in Port Orange.

Jeff:

Thanks for the nice comments.....I am famaliar with the Buttercup designed by Steve Wittman.....a gentleman has recently built the full size plane and is now offering the plans for it....everything Steve Wittman designed was interesting and I'm happy to report that my little model W-10 flies just like the full size, very clean and fast but will also hang on the prop forever before stalling since the fuse also acts as a crude airfoil.

just neat as heck. i've had a warm spot for w whitman airplanes for a long time. certainly the buttercup. i was fortunate to meet mr. walt at oshkosh about 20 yrs ago. very nice man, loved to talk airplanes. the world of avaition lost a great one when passed on to his reward. enough of that, a great job on the tailwind, looks lovely. glad to hear it acts like the full sized craft, for it was a great performer. thanks frank

see ya

ps it was amazing to see mr.walt crawl into a plane, he must have been 6'6" or more, cut some diados to get in a plane.
