Default Joy Stick

I was all set to get a 1/2A Joy Stick. I picked this plane based on it's picture.

I just found out that this picture is of another plane and not the Joy Stick.

Any one know the name of this plane?

http://www.rcmplans.com/index.php?ma...oducts_id=1413

P.S.

Looking over the plans it looks like the same plane to me. Looks like a Joy Stick with the bubble canapé removed and given' the PT-19 treatment.

Looks like this guy,

"On a side note if you look at the pic for the Joy Stick on the RC Modeler plans page, they show a nice but wrong Half A model. Only the pic is wrong. all other info on page is correct."

doesn’t know what he's talking about.

I like it. The JS looks like a simple build and a fun flyer.

It's going to be hard to tell the difference from one period-1/2A aircraft to another because the equipment requires them to be fairly similar. Same wingspan, same chords, same tail moment, same nose length etc.

If you haven't had a chance to yet, every 1/2A'er needs to build a Bee-Tween. It's a Randy Randolph design for a reed valve with a similar layout to what you have in your pictures. Should be a little lighter-I scaled my first one up 1/8th and used an OS .10FP. Great airplane!

One difference I see is the airfoil. The JS is symmetrical, and the Bee-Tween is more Clark Y-ish.

I built a Joystick many years ago and I still have it and the plans with templates in the cellar. I used a TD .061 on a red tank mount and it was fast. To turn it, since it didn't have ailerons, you gave it rudder and then elevator. The rudder barely turned it, it was the elevator that did the job and with authority. It was a bit of a handful, but fun. I have a friend who also built one with ailerons and a pressure system. That was a real handful. It's an easy build and enjoyable.

It's a joys stick, I have the article somewhere and they built three for the article, this is one of them.

The pix shown on the RCM website is a Joystick modified to a tail dragger configuration, and dressed up to look like a golden era AAF trainer. I have the RCM plans book, and the picture in it is correct. Somebody just goofed when they built the RCM website and published a slightly modified Joystick picture.

I built a Joystick in 1976 with a Cox TD-049 for power, and am still flying it today. It goes like stink after all these years, and is easy and fun to fly. It will perform any manuever that a Rudder/Elevator combination is capable of performing. Very stout design, and easy to build.

That is true, the BeeTween's wing is not symmetrical, I consider that to be a plus though.

I still have mine ;-0  also built a longer span wing with ailerons.. after a short while as the plan wing wasn't great.  flies fine and far 'better' with the extra 6'' span and especially with the ailerons.  Never even bothered making / fitting the wheels .. what for?
Build one ? it's a fast build.. do suggest building it lighter, as there's no need whatsoever for the 1/8" fuse, although mine did survive a 80/100' power dive, Stuka style, early on, onto a currogated steel roof , largely unscathed  because of the overbuilt construction.

Good post danilo-2.

Yeah it will be built liter. Man why did they need to build these little plans so heavy back in the day? I'm building an GLH right now and the plans call for a 3/32" fuse. Plus 1/2 of that is doubled so the front half of the GLH has 3/16 walls. Crazy.

I went with 1/16 with 1/16 doublers and it's a ton lighter!

I'm going to keep the Joy Stick's plan form the same. Going electric on it as that's why it was selected. I have a motor I ordered by mistake so I decided to build a plane for the motor.

I think I'm going to take your advice on the ailerons. I'm thinking about one nano servo on each aileron. I'm going to try it on the GLH and see how well they do.

I still like the PT-19 look.

I put in an order for the plans on Thursday.

Someone started up Mr Peabody's way back machine. The Joy Stick was my first scatch built plane. Dave Mcdonald taught me to cut foam wings and I scratched out eight "kits". Aileron elevator version, no dihedral, TD engine. I crash mine more times than I can count cuz I was a RANK beginner at the time. I still have one of those eight "kits". I also recently bumped into a NIB kit on Fleabay and snagged it for the kit collection. awfully fun little plane.
The PT version is shown on the cover of the little instruction pamplet in the kit exactly like the pic shown. :-)

RCM is running slow with the plans. I still haven't received the ones I ordered a couple of weeks ago.

The order before this I placed the order on Thursday and the plans arrived on Monday. I got an e-mail Tuesday stating that the plans for that order had been shipped.

No word from RCM on this order.

AmishWarlord ,
You'll like the Joystick, it was fast with a TD! I would recomend going full house and loosing some dihedral. As you said your going electric your weight should stay very good even with an extra servo.
Are you going to do a build log?

Yeah I'll do a build log on here.

No word from RCM plans service, "no plans in the mail either!" so I gave them a call and was told the plans will be shipped out Friday or Monday and been here in NC a week after that.

The lipos for the Joy Stick came in today from Hobby King.

I went with 3S 1300mAh 15C packs.

Still waiting on the 18A ESC to come in also.

Batteries have came along way. I remember when the Joy Stick would need a six pack of sub-C's to fly.

These little lipo packs are the same size as a 2oz fuel tank.

18A ESC came in today!

...but when I hooked everything up the ESC was DOA.

Anyway I have some 40A ESCs wired up so I just grabbed one of those for testing the power system out.

I got 11,700 RPM with the 8x4 prop
12.3A
129 watts

5 mins to get down to 3.3 volts per cells with the 1,300mAh packs.

The prop calc says,
8x4 at 11,700RPM
1.55 stat thrust
44.3 mph
130w

Looks like my Joy Stick is going to be a slow flier!
...should be a nice break after the GLH

Going to move down to a 15A ESC now that I know what to expect. Now to find one.

EBS? Electric BS?

I've always found those electric motors never had any compression, and no matter how much i prime them, I can never get so much as pop.

There is such a lack of guys contributing builds to this forum that I don't mind seeing 1/2AE planes here.

+1! I just like to see what others are building and as long as they aren't the light foam electric, I'm o.k.

It is good to know that an .049 is pretty much 130 watts anyway.  I got this pesky Aquastar that never idles right, or even takes off from the water, that regretably will have to succumb to the Leckie darkside some day.  It is such a pretty plane to waste.  I got another one with a brushed motor that is begging for a brushless/lipo transplant.  At least it isn't a foamy.  Hmm Fora power is getting more reasonably priced.

I also like to see 1/2A size build up balsa planes!!! I also build them electric & nito.

How many are actually have a 1/2A (.049) engine on them?

I would rather see them fly as electric, then having less of them flying! Because if you read these threads, it's about 1/2 & 1/2, and mostly about just engines. Which I like to fly, and not tinker with them anymore. So I don't really read to much, when I read the engine threads. Use to, but not anymore.

I just want to build & fly,and have fun doing it!

Pat
