Default Hey Dickeybird, I need help!

Just picked up a new Cox R/C 05 from the LHS. The owner, a long time friend, wasn’t trying to unload it on me although he admitted he couldn’t remember how many years it had been in the back room. After all he reminded me the norvel has more power, idles better, is lighter and cost less. (He didn’t know that even new out of the box, it wouldn’t perform as well as the Dickeybird engines I saw at Little Rock and am trying to duplicate.) So why did I pay full retail ($65) and am happy to get it? Was it a fleeting glimpse into the ‘more money than brains’ club? Do I need looking after?

Al:

I'll stick my nose in here. If it is the very latest 05 RC you got a good engine that throttles well.

If it is the earlier version prepare to be frustrated. They do work, but setting them up is as much by fuel selection as anything else. And it's different in the afternoon of the day it ran well earlier.

Just went looking for the thread where I posted pictures of the early and late 05 RC engines, couldn't find it. So here's a picture of the older one. Note no adjustment for idle, a fixed air bleed port, and just a stub pipe for the exhaust. Andy W. thought it was a mod using a Tarno carb, but it is genuine ex-factory.

And here's the later one. If this is what you got, I'm jealous.

Note the proper barrel muffler, and the added screw on the carb - an adjustable air bleed.

Hi Bill,
Thanks for the reply; I addressed Dickeybird since he is the one that got me all fired up into the Cpx throttle 049s. I think that this engine is about 1992 vintage but it does have the air bleed carb. Looks like your second pic I think. I bought it ’just because I always wanted one’ no other logic. But if it is a decent performer, so much the better.
Thanks again,
Al
PS I think he has a couple more if anyone is interested.

Big Al,

As you know, I'm intensely interested in throttled 1/2As. Would you be so kind as to keep us posted about your experiences with this engine? Top end, idle, fuel and prop used etc. Will it idle for minutes at a time without loading up? How is acceleration or throttle response? I've had results differing from Bob Aberle's review of this engine in flying Models some 8 years back.

Anyone else with input on this engine?

BTW, there's nothing wrong with snapping up an out of production classic.

Default 049 Medallion

Hi Guys,
Now you have me curious & confused.
I recently purchased another version of a Cox 049 engine.
Here is the description. Hope you can tell me more about what I have.

It is called a Medallion 049 with throttle control & muffler.
Came in black /red/silver box.
Inside the box it says:Throttle & Muffler-Radio Control Stunt Engine.
Part # is: 2501
Instruction sheet dated 1992.
Date stamp inside the box indicates Jul 28 1993.
It does not have a carb.
It has a large combination muffler & throttle sleeve which is very smooth & easy turning.
Has black steel muffler spring that can be rotated for quietness.
The circlip located near the bottom of the aluminum sleeve/muffler could be turned by the smallest of servos.

I hope you guys can shed some light on this little gem.

Thanks,
Bob G

Kyle:

Yes, it's an airboat. Scratch built. A neighbor kid saw another of my boats run, he wanted one to play with also. I built this one as an example for him to copy. The boat I showed the earlier 05 RC on is the one he built.

Mine has a hard balsa frame with 0.018" plywood sheeting on the hull bottom, sides, and bow. The deck is 1/8" balsa.

Except for the radio compartment the entire hull is filled with the two-part liquid foam from NHP.

19.5" LOA, 14" LWL, 12.5" beam. Static freeboard at tthe transom is 2" with a 3/4" maximum draft. In still water the keel is 1/2" out of the water at the bow. Height is 8 3/4" from the bottom of the keel to the top of the fin.

I have a Futaba R122JE rx, two FMA S300 servos, and a 500mah battery. The switch is in a Du-Bro mount, the actuating pin goes through a 3/4" sleeve, i've not gotten any water through it. Formed the deck hatch gasket using black RTV, I may have gotten a drop or two of water in, but I've never noticed any.

Picture attached is the bottom of the hull, to give you an idea of the shape.

Any more questions, just ask.

Bill.

I have a later model and it screams!!! Throttle and idle are great. I can't imagine the Norvel having more power. Maybe!! Steve

Kyle:

Thank you. Here's a top view, with the radio compartment open.

The rx is on the port side, near the antenna, balanced by the battery opposite.

Default RE: Cox .051

Hi Al,

Sorry 'bout the slow response....I've been on vacation. I've never run a Cox 05 R/C engine so I can't really comment one way or t'other. I can't figure out how to properly navigate this screwy new format so I hope you see this.

If you need some help modifying a Tee Dee, I'll be glad to help. A guy with your talents will have no problem at all.
