skaliwag, I believe this Lee Renaud design uses a simple structure of 2 vertical spruce struts with a spruce saddle glued to the struts, protruding far enough to hook rubber bands to hold the wing, similar to his Q-Tee. I can wait. I have the basic airframe design in my head. It is the method of keeping the upper wing up there over the pilots head and how that structure is most efficiently / affectively attached to stay put in a "hard" landing I am exploring.

By looking at it you'll see how he supports the wing using the system I described. He used this same system for the Gere Sport, but I think he went to slightly larger cross sections of wood to support greater engine power and aerobatics. (I think Q-Tee used 1/8x1/4 spruce, Gere Sport slightly larger.)

The Q-tee is on my build list but for electrict tho . I have wanted to build one for a long time but my ten year old son says he will build this one so its to the back seat for me but wth a big smile on my ugly mug. joe

That's a really good ambition for a 10 YO, and there is no reason why with a little guidance couldn't build such a plane.

Of course, you could get the plans and build the Gere Sport. By the same author, construction wise, it is basically a Q-Tee with a bottom wing. As a biplane and with the right electric motor setup, could be a real blast to fly.

I used to fly with a guy who built QTees for combat. He and a flying partner were the ones who introduced me to 1/2A RC combat. I thought it sounded crazy, but with the speeds kept low the planes don't ever [hardly ever] hit with enough closing speed to cause crashes that can't be fixed on the spot. We used 2 inch wide rolls of crepe paper that were bandsawed in half to 1 inch wide, then tied about 20 feet of weak string and 20 feet of crepe paper to the string for the streamers. The action is all tight furball stuff and the Cox .049s will run for 15 to 20 minutes on the 2 oz tanks which seems like a long run but it was never long enough when you're having that much fun.
A pair of QTee bipes would be interesting to see going at it.

CP, that is a real interesting and I can imagine a really fun way to enjoy combat with loads of fun on a shoestring, not to mention with minimal plane damages.

The 36" span Gere Sport is not actually a Q-Tee bipe, but the author of it patterned the construction to be Q-Tee like. If one has already built a Q-Tee or S-Tee (the shoulder wing version of the Q-Tee), they should have no problem in replicating it. The Gere Sport is a stand off sport scale model of the real bipe, sort of resembles an EAA (Experimental Aircraft Association) bipe.

But you are right, with a good .15 engine or its electric equivalent would provide loads of fun as combat models.

We flew the QTees in combat with .049 baby bees and 2 oz tanks with 6x3 props. Some of the manuevering and loss of altitude after taking a shot at scoring would put the attacker back on the defensive. There was not enough surplus power to just play a game of "brain dead chicken".
Keeping the planes as equal [and as slow] as possible is what adds up to having the best matches. Those planes would get pretty bogged down after collecting the other guy's streamer, so the match was never truly over until both planes ran out of gas.

CP, having flown the Q-Tee myself, it doesn't have enough power during climb except to move out at a moderate rate to gain altitude. One had to put it into a dive to gain enough speed do a loop, so yes, it would be a real challenge against another. Then when the streamer was cut for the first kill, the shorter less draggy streamer would allow the opponent to have an edge over the "killer", able to fly at a quicker pace.

These days putting a Thunder Tiger GP-07 or a Norvel equivalent in the Q-Tee would really hop it up.

That's where I think that these 3 feet (900 mm) wingspan biplanes, such as the Gere Sport, Ace R/C All Star, Ken Willard's Schoolgirl and etc. would be a real hoot with .10 to .15 engines and 2 - 3 oz. (60 - 90 cc) fuel tanks.

Sure thing. For general sport flying I get bored pretty quick with a plane that can't go straight up at will.
I've built scaled down QTees for back yard flying with .049 power..all the way down to roughly 7 ozs.
All stick framework and covered with craft store cellophane/3M77. "Disposable" models but great fun while they last. It's really easy to clutter up your shop with ideas like these though. Gotta be ruthless every year when it comes time to "cull the herd".
Viking funerals for all that I get tired of looking at.

Funny story. I had a parakeet bipe on the building board the first time I got layed lol. I was 15 at the time I remember having an OS .25 on it. Seeing that photo reminded me of it. Good times.

heh, the only real bashing that occured was to to the tailfeathers. Apart from that, it's pretty much stock as a rock

I did make one mistake with it though, I didn't get the decalage on the upper wing correct, but it worked out okay, it'll loop in about 4 feet, it won't outside loop but that's a moot point as the engine will cutout if I try anyway.
