My friend rrgeosmith has a Q-Tee. We've flown it at SMALL. Maybe one day I'll build one, or the sister ship, the S-Tee.

My Dad built 3 Q-Tees. One was box stock with a Golden Bee, the second was a .15 sized version that blew it's tail off with an O.S. Wankle, and the third is bone stock waiting in his shop to be flown.

I have an S-Tee kit that I got off of FeeBay a few years back, it will be built stock but I plan to kitbash a second model with a semi-symmetrical wing and ailerons.

I remember the Q-T very well. I had one back in the 70's or 80's. I still have the wing complete with my racing number. I had the tail feathers also for years, but have not seen them lately. I have been thinking of building another one but will have to find the plans first. My first one had a Royal two channel receiver and cox 0.49. I had a ball with it and rebuilt it several times. I will follow this thread closely. The ST was a QT with the wing on top of the fuse..

rc doc.....I don't remember where or when I saw it posted but there was a photo of [IIRC] a dozen or more QTees in racing trim that were all built by members of the same club.

I flew a QTee a few times with a .049 on the nose and a .049 on a "power pod" that was rubberbanded to the top wing. Twice the burnt fuel, twice the burnt glow plugs, but I don't remember if it was twice the fun.......

I have a yellow one that was my Dad's, and an orange one I picked up at a swap meet a couple of years back. I'll probably hang on to the yellow one, and re-equip the orange one. The original builder had full size S148 servos in it, kinda heavy. I think I can lighten it up a bunch, will probably have a black widow on the front of it. Maybe this year, eh?

speaking of making things lighter, what is a good battery to use in a plane? I'd love to use 6 or 6.6V.. not 4.8. Tower has that little 200 mah LiFe battery that weighs 15 grams, but it's over 20 bucks, and in this day and age, that seems nuts for a receiver battery.

I have a 360 mah LiPo, but by the time you add the regulator, it's not all that light. LiFe would be preferred - anyone know of a small light one that someone besides Tower sells?

I've been in the habit of using NIMH in the 350 mah range. Sometimes I'll buy a 350 mah Xmitter pack from GreatPlanes for something like $15 and then make 2 RX packs out of it.
Otherwise I've bought packs from common sense rc with good results. Packs this small [in NIMH] don't tolerate fast field charging, so I usually bring 2 or 3 packs to last a long session of 2 channel flying.

bummer - just looked, the 350 mah 9.6V pack (great planes) is listed as discontinued at tower.

I might pick up a 180 mah LiPo and use a lightweight regulator, I guess. Hobbyking has a little lightweight switching regulator that only weighs 8 grams or so.

Radical sells a 400 pack reasonably priced with only 3 bucks shipping. Also, back in the day, 500 packs were all that was used for 4 full size servos. 400 on 2 micro servos should last many flights.

I was going to build a "Real Thing", but I also have plans for the Q-Tee. The Q-Tee would be a little bit better on the "Almost 400" brushless motor I have laying around. It looks like a nice, simple build. I have always wanted one as a simple, fun flyer. I know I have threatened to build one in the past, but I think the time is right to pull the trigger and build one. I will start cutting parts right after the weekend, and post some pics as it goes together.

(Warning, I have a real life, so building will be sporadic, with a few breaks)

I've got Q-Tee, but in bad need of repairs from the last Figure-9, shattered the nose up to the first wing strut. I'll need to make a new fuse front, this will be the second time. Might power it with something hotter than the Black Widow that grace it.

Looks like I will be doing a build on 2 of them pretty soon.

#1 will have an Old School Cox/Sanwa 2ch radio and whatever Cox engine I can dig out of a box, and #2 will be electric ( I have no clue about any of the electric stuff, so this should be fun)

Looks like you picked a good platform to experiment with electric power. I liked my Q-Tee, because even at a 6,500 feet elevation, it had sufficient wing area. With the right prop, in this case a 6x3, the .049 Black Widow was able to haul it around with authority. It shouldn't take too much to haul it around, but with the right setup with a little more thrust, I could see the Q-Tee really become a blast to fly.

I am drawing up cut files for a Q-Tee as we speak as a home for my re-found medallion from the Lost & Found thread. It's been 30 years since the last one and it was a golden Bee with S-28 servos. From reading all the threads out there, seems they can come out tail heavy with a beam mount Cox. I was thinking of heading that off at the pass, so here is my thinking.

1. Build a lighter tail. 1/8 sheet with lightening holes in the stab and rudder. Also add a few to the rear of the fuse. I have done this with Jr Falcons and you save a bunch of weight in the trunk.

2. Moving the firewall 1/2" forward. This makes up for no tank and leaves me with more room for the internal tank. Then with smaller gear, I can move things around inside to come out with a good CG.

Any thoughts?

I added a Harry Higley's Heavy Hub to mine, it replaced the prop screw on the Black Widow. It added either a quarter or half ounce of weight out front where it was needed.

You could mount the Medallion on a Norvel RC 1 oz. tank mount. Here's how it looks on a Sterling Minnie Mambo. Tank mount put the engine well in front, curing the tail heaviness.

I built one from tiled plans 2 years ago. They are a fast simple build. To get the correct C.G. I ended up using a heavier receiver battery up front than i wanted to+1/2oz weight on the firewall. So the weight ended 19+oz with golden bee and micro gear. This power to weight ratio is not good. I would like to build another and move servos as far forward as possible. My question is (how far can you extend the firewall without changing the flying characteristics of the plane?

My thinking is that using a beam mount motor, the 1/2" is just making up for the tank difference. The prop is still in the same place.

Norvel engine with RC tank is 3" (76 mm) from tank back to prop drive washer. Tee Dee or Medallion .049 AFAIK will fit this tank mount. OTOH, I believe the Black Widow is 2-3/8" (60 mm) long. By moving the motor out further will help with balance. Of course, the other solution is to simply extend the front of the airplane fuselage so the bulkhead is another inch to 1.5 inches. As long as one doesn't change the firewall orientation should not matter significantly.

If you have ever looked at a full size conventional tractor airplane that underwent change from a gas engine to turbo prop (i.e., Pilatius Porter for example), you'll notice they lengthened the nose and put the engine further forward to compensate for the lighter turbo prop engine, put the CG back where it belongs.

The Q-Tee is a kitten of an airplane and if there were any adjustments to be made may be the downthrust and right side thrust, based on engine on performance versus gliding. These are easy to do with 4-40 flat washers on the firewall type engine mounts and tank mounts.

S-Tee for me. My second RC plane about 1978, TD 049,2 channel Futaba with dry cells. Still have the plane and engine; fuel soaked but all together. First Monokote job too. I am restoring plane #3 a Jensen Ugly Stick; may have to restore the S-Tee next.
