Default SKYDRILL...... She flies.

The Skydrill is an adaptation of P T Ulmer's Kao-tic.
Both plans are a free down load on PT's website.

http://www.ulmer-rc.com/dotnetnuke/H...n/Default.aspx

This one flies well and is nimble on SIG 25%. Half throttle is a comfortable ride. Really nice Consecutive Loops and Cubans. Airleron rolls are axial.

Originally designed for an 049 / 061 Gas engine, (Sure Start, AP, NORVEL- Who?), but like every thing else I have dreamed up the last few years electric propulsion is just a matter of screwing one of those 'eeleckies on the F/Wall.

Skydrill Specs...

W.Span....... 32"
W.Area........185 sq in
Weight..........12.6oz ..... (Empty Tank)
Engine .........Cox Reedie parts. . S/Start Case. Medalion Piston/Cylinder with T-Ring. Std head. K.Bee back plate. 6 X 3 Cox prop.
Tank ............ Sullivan 2oz Round.
Fuel...............SIG, 25%
Servo's ..........4 x HS 55's.
Rx.................Berg 7.
Battery...........4 cell 220Mah NiMh.
Covering.........Doculam, with Krylon sprayed on the glue side.
Decals by....... Milton Dickey.

Short kits and long kits are on the way... I have drawn the line at ARF though. The closest I can offer to that is 50 or so build pics and a build sequence.

Looks great, Skaliwag! How do you like the Krylon / Doculam?

Doculam?..... I love the stuff. $25 for a lifetime suply. It's light, it shrinks well and you can paint the glue side with Krylon.
The Krylon and the Doculam glue seem to melt together when heat is put on the seams. With Doculam alone I was having trouble keeping the seams down on the planes that use 35% Nitro

Plenty of colours too

Skaliwag, great job on the new plane! Who needs the big kit manufacturers to cater to the 1/2A crowd? We have at least four people now offering 1/2A models; you, Bob H, Patrick, me and I'm sure I'm missing others. I keep reading good things about Doculam. Actually, I don't think I've read anything bad about it. Does it only come in clear, or do they offer tinted colrs, too?

Have you tried scuffing the doculam and then using Krylon Fusion paint?

Scuffing the outside sounds like a lot of work and I don't need the extra weight of full coat. I only used to dust the glue side.

Put me down for a short kit. Mine will burn electrons though.

Prepping the doculam isn't a big deal-just get some agressive Scotchbright pads and rough the outside of the covering before you apply it to the model.

I love Doculam..... if only Moneykote went on as nice and shrank as well.

Can you use Plasticote with Doculam? The acrilic lacquer versions are fuel proof.

I'll have to let you know-I've only used it on electric models. I will put some 35% on on of my motorcycles that's painted camoflage with it and see what happens.

Tee Bee,

I tried it on a test panel and it peels very bad if you mask it for trimming. I tried wipping it with acetone, lacquer thinner, denatured alcohol and scuffing it and it peeled on all of them. Was hoping to have found the grand solution to small electrics. Have read how people have done it but I cannot get mine to not peel and I used different colors of the Fusion paint just in case it was that. As for the glow fuel, not sure. About the only thing I have found to hold up to 1/2 A fuel is epoxy paint.

Interesting. Many so called fuel proof paint is only good to about 15% nitro. Acrylic lacquer and butyrate dope is good to about 15% nitro, that includes Lusterkote which is acrylic lacquer. But that is raw fuel. If you do not spill any fuel they are good to much higher nitro. I have had many models with dope paint that held up fine except a few round circles and run lines where raw fuel was spilt from the tank vent or overflow, or just spilt. Often they can be polished out, or sanded and sprayed with a coat of clear dope or lacquer. Is there more unburned fuel in a 1/2 a engine than the larger sizes?

What was the base of the old Krylon? Acetone / Beetone ? Cetone ? Kaytone? Gorilla pzz?. . Because it sure worked for me on the glue side.

LOL Yes, 1/2 A's are a slimy mess after running. High oil and usually with no directed exhaust. Also, in order to start you squirt raw fuel in exhaust port which allows raw fuel to get on everything as well as any unburned fuel. Many are hand launched which requires them to be wiped down after each flight because you cannot hold them. These are just some of the reasons some hate 1/2 A, but I love 'em. As for the dope, my experience is after a short while, when you wipe the plane clean, what ever color it is starts to come off on the towel.

Well my experiance with larger engines is that even when the nitro is well over 15% the exhaust will not bother the dope. So I am wondering if there is more unburned fuel on 1/2 a engines. That is that they are not as efficient and fuel is coming out of subports or passing through the exhaust before the piston closes the exhaust ports. I knew that many, not all have no muffler's and exhaust gets over everything. But that is also a problem with larger control line engines as well.
