The idea of the 2 .10s sounds good but won't have the 4 engine sound...glow or electric. I have sat a .10 by the motor mounts on the plans and I just don't think they will fit.

The norvels will have reasonable consistency and the ..061's put out good power

Bruce, you're right, 4 FS 20's would be sweet, but where in the hell are you goingt o find 4 20's that aren't all clapped out!. Come to think of it, 4 equally clapped out 20's would be just fine

Yeah Norvels or FS20s or any other discontinued engine is not going to happen. they will need to be new with replacements available and be broke in together. I do have a pair of AP .09's and have thought about getting 2 more if I can make them fit. They look too big for the nacelles but the muffler location would be a plus.

I wouldn't be using the AP09's either.

Not the greatest cosnistency in those motors.

The Norvel .074 are very reliable and well throttling engines. And the weight is only slightly higher than their .061 ones.
The .074 can also handle a 6x4 prop, unlike the .061 which is more happy on a 5x3 prop.

If it's not too late to comment,,

Four engine planes require ABSOLUTE reliability. One engine out not too big a deal. One engine out on each wing,, still OK. Two engines out on the same wing and not likely that you'll get the plane down in one piece. If you're low and slow and just happen to be headed home, chopping throttle immediately will save your plane. If you make it back to the runway, that'll be a bonus.

Otherwise, If you have to turn INTO the dead wing, your plane is dead. If you have to turn AWAY from the dead wing, unless your throttles are dead nuts idle, you'll have trouble.

That's where electrics shine, no question.

If you demand that sound from multiple engines that only a real engine delivers then your choices are limited.

The AP .061 is a better choice for power to weight. Throttling is good despite not having an adjustable airbleed. The Thundertigres are lower in power to weight but have superior throttling.

Norvel .049s and .06s have no means to adjust the low speed, so they are a no no.

The BEST choice for this project is the Norvel .074.

They have the best power to weight and despite no low speed needle, they idle forever and respond instantly.

I'm curious to know how this project is coming along.

I have a big, B17, electric foamy that I got specifically for four Norvel .074s on diesel. Those will provide a more realistic, low speed roar over high revving glow engines.

This illustrates the Diesel .074 for sound and reliability. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PuS3r-rQ9rM

Have to agree with Andy and Mr Cox, the 074's are the closest you can get to electric reliability. Plus they pull a 6X 4 with ease. 2oz tanks are all you need as you will be running at 1/2 throttle most of the time. Now if only they made them with electric start.......

No it isn't too late to comment. As soon as I finish assembling a GP Giant Big Stick 1.60 I will be starting on the H.P. 42. I don't think I will make the final decision until I get to the engine mounting. I will be starting a thread in scale models if anyone wants to follow. Better yet order the short kit and build one with me.
Thanks for all the input. It is not going unread. I did get one ASP 061 but have not tested it. When they get back in stock I will order 3 more to make sure I have them available...might order 4 Thunder Tigers also.

Chinn did a review on this engine back in the day and found the thin foil of a Tornado prop to provide impressive rpm and thrust for the .074 and highly recommended its suited use for a plane sized for a 6in dia prop.

Chinn's selection was based on static tests I feel the 6x4 on a modern size / weight plane can make the QB shine like a winner unloaded in the air.
I have a 5.5x4 modern shape and formed master airscrew (they have thinner foils now) stiffer and lighter prop may be an even better choice in the air.

Note white is the 6x4 and black the 6x3

I guess this was meant to be in the Queen Bee thread?

A 6x4 may seem to be about the right load during a bench run, it gives good idle and transition, but mine would overheat easily. That problem is not present on a 6x3 prop, but the idle is not as nice, due to the lack of load I guess.

The Thunder Tigre 07GP has similar problems, and runs better on lighter loads too, i.e. a 6x3 prop.

As with all engines, one has to go with a prop that the engine can handle at sustained full throttle setting.

Yes exactly that's why I think the MA 5.5 x 4 may be the prop to allow good use of a 4p with .074's

Or you just get the Norvel .074 which takes a 6.3x4 with ease...
