Here we go next to the 115.74mph doppler prop 2.7x3 / .9g

2.58 x 4N / 135 mph prop .6g the spinner bolt is allowed to be shorter
and the lip of the spinner removed .9g for 1.5g total mass.
Back cut and square tips for the first days run.

Wonder if Roy would have approved of the 2.58 x 4N LOL not...
Stock prop on the left with a back cut instant speed boost.

Lil Speedy II - TD .049 version is ready to roll at 6.19oz less fuel.
This is the lightest 3ch 1/2A I have ever set up. Will hold 9.4g of fuel
185g / 6.5oz ready to fly.

Had to put the battery in the tail and move the RX behind the servos
allowed me to keep the wing as ia. CG is just on 25%. I added a bit of
down flap to compensate will help on landings. As luck would have
it I had a third firewall back plate on hand that was not as fancy as
the other two and didn't mind drilling extra holes to make it fit.

SPI , dual bypass ports, 1 shim with a high compression head.
Will bench test next to break it in, check for vibration and
get a base line static reading with 30% nitro.

Prop is a 4.2 x 4N
If 22k static / 6.8oz thrust / 70w / 84mph.
If down wind pass 31k unloaded / 118 mph +

Time to trim an APC 5.25x6.25 to 3.5" diameter and go for it.

Okay got in a 10cc break in with a brap of the good stuff so far with minimal run time:

Static best read 24,063 rpm during brief run, after break in may hit 24.6k static.

Per video - Pre prep for base line read 23,690 rpm with just 10cc of fuel
Quick run up to check modified APC 4.2x4N (narrow) and throttle set up.
7.8oz thrust / 90mph / .119hp / 88.774w Est. 118 mph + 6.19oz RTF
30% nitro / 20% oil. what a beast from a TD .010 to .020 and now Phase III

Results are excellent thrust to weight 6.19oz Vs 7.8oz is going to allow
the Lil Speedy stay at top end all over the flying field, glad I have throttle
to tame the maiden flight. Ripping 106 mph 3ch TD .020 next
3ch TD .049 bullet. If carbon APC 3.75 x 4.75NC / 30k / 135 mph.

That's a real good specimen ...!
Is that a factory original engine...?
When I first got into 1/2A in 1984, I bought 5 TDs that were all too tight right out of the box. The local 1/2A Gurus said they were probably of a 1970's production run that were considered very good once broken in..and they were right..!
24,000 was the benchmark with a 5x3 prop and those engines for the most part survived 10 times better than any other TDs and replacement parts that I ever bought since then.

Not sure of the age date on this one was bought mint never ran.
This one had the beam mounts already removed from a guy in France who sold it on ebay.
It had the round firewall mounting back plate.

This is parts I added and its configuration:

- Throttle sleeve is well made allows SPI and
has large exhaust ports slop free fit no movement up or down or wiggle.

- Smooth bore non screen venturi
- Ace fine thread NV
- Aluminum Carb body with O ring in front and scilicon thin washer in back
- Thinner style aluminum back plate that uses the engines back plate to hold it in place
- 2 bypass ports no flutes
- 1 shim
- High compression head
- 5-40 taped TD .020 spinner
- shorter bolt
- SPI

I need to do a few more rich beak in runs yet. With only 10cc of fuel run time will suffer perhaps 3 mins. per flight. Could use low throttle to get up wind then open it up should get about 10 passes per test run. The APC props are thick at the hubs, I have ordered spare carbon 4.75x4.75EC props I have two on hand and will ultimately use them as the blades are not as
thick at the hub more like the Cox 5x3 should get a big boost in rpm due to that and low weight
APC 4.2x4 / 3.5g
APC 4.1x4.1E / 3.1g
APC 4.75x4.75EC / 2.6g

Lil Speedy no engine 4.25oz / 120.5g

Integrated firewall mount.

Made another prop from Sunday a 3.5 x 4.75EC

Thin E blade should do about 24.8k static cant fire it up too loud for this time of day.
cut prop is only 2.4g vs 3.3g of the tested 4.2x4N / 23.69k
The prop was much tougher to cut but shapes well with a file and fine sand paper.

Lil Speedy on steroids

Carbon APC 3.54 x 4.75C
Static in the hand 24,798 / 4.4oz thrust / 112 mph
After launch I could tell right off the ailerons where wayyy to sensitive I had to
back off the throttle immediately never allowed it past 26,880 rpm 121 mph per vid.

The throttle was set at 1/3rd yet the Lil Speedy was still fast with peppy wild ailerons.
Pitch was ok did 3 laps then the elevator servo came unglued from its mount.
The plane hit in at around 50 mph with the nose down some, engine was at idle no
damage to the plane. Rubber bands snapped and saved the wing. Engine found
some soft damp ground but still broke the mount and both prop blades. Day over.
So will regroup and try again next weekend or after work this week.
Good thrust for a 3.54 dia prop it climb right out up high in short order was zipping
around wing dancing. The footage was painful to watch knowing what was about to happen.
Ailerons are already dialed down to 28% due to the speed of the TD .020 / 106 mph. The extra
weight and speed will need the ailerons reduced to about 19% throw for the next flight.

Well you gained some ground with the experimental prop and you were able to salvage the plane..so not such a bad day.
A bad day of flying is better than a good day at work.......!

Lol very true Chuck!!

Wish I could have opened up the throttle all the way least long enough to get a top end read.
The weight of the TD .049 loaded down the elevator enough to pop the servo loose it was glued
to the balsa side wall served well for the smaller engines but no good now. Will have to make a
more robust mount using thin ply and spruce blocks for the servo tabs and screws.

The Lil Speedy in a brief moment has now gone faster than before and should get clean passes
over 130 mph awesome for a TD .049.

I think the more forward CG on the wings made the ailerons more effective that and the additional speed.

Here is a pic the break away ring that snapped off clean makes a good washer for something.
Does anyone recognize this type of back plate who may have made them? The new back plate
is on the plane will sort out the elevator servo for a rebate flight this week.

Hi Alan,
I am using one of those now.. what I was hoping for is the break away type that I exercised today at the field.
It saved my firewall and perhaps more. The engine snapped away perfectly leaving a thin ring sandwiched between
the TD back plate and crank case. The Texas Timers will work but should I crash again things are going to break.

Everything is fixed I am ready for another go. A 1/2A NANO with ply sides and 1oz fuel tank is mulling around in the old noodle.

Here is a saved pic of the break away back plate before it did it's thing today at the field.

Bingo I found who had made them:

That would not be too hard to make. Just turn a bit off the face of the backplate and make the ring. I have not seen that type before.

Yes very true Alan,

I looked at that when I was installing the Texas Timers version. The other option is to buy some 2mm bolts
4 would be used that 8mm worth of nylon holding the lil beasty on the nose.

I have mounted a 4.1 x 4.1E on the engine for the next test flight no back cut going to fly with some throttle
management to save fuel. The ailerons have been reduced to 19% throw. Hope to get some good passes on vid here next. The Lil Speedy has been a real treat to fly with the TD .010 and .020 the .049 is a big jump in power so will respect it and be careful to avoid any more mishaps. Expect about 120 mph due to small size and low low weight. 6.19oz RTF

That would be too fast for me. I flew my Ace Simple 400 with the Norvel .06, it's a handful for the first 20 seconds, and a half a tank to get up to full throttle. Pretty quick, but not 120. Really fast rolls.

Thats a much bigger plane 180sq. in / 34in span wing. The Lil Speedy is 65 sq. in / 17in span.
Its a lil bullet but tame enough if the rates are set up right. Thus far its speed is helped by setting up
passes by the camera. The TD .049 pulls it around consistently in any direction. At 1/3rd throttle it
made great thrust and still covered flying box fast. To balance now the battery is in the tail
and so is the RX.

Here is a size reference:

I had trouble fitting the receiver in the 400. Can't imagine anything smaller.

Hi Dwayne, you can load just the photos and find plenty of info on the build I designed it on this thread.

Here is a vid from the other week with a TD .020 on the nose.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BO4Zgvu28zg The plans call for a 59.14cc or 2oz fuel tank vs 10cc in the LS for reference a Baby Bee holds 8cc.
Run time bites but there is room for a 20cc tank may retrofit. I had a few Futaba Attack 4ch RX
I would use in the 1/2A planes with the case removed and shrink rap. Was good enough to fly
.049's and .09's / 3ch with throttle. Flew a QB with the set up not too bad.

Will try this next 2.58 x 4N
36k / 140 mph.
34.2k / 130
33k / 125

Prop seems perfect in all regards the rpm may actually top 36k
as it's hub is a perfect fit, and narrow airfoil has back cut but I didn't
have to knock much off the prop.

NANO II / 2oz
2x4 / 42k / 160 mph

Ok tested both planes gathering data here is the low down so far.

Lil Speedy - TD .049

1 shim and HC Plug / throttle sleeve.
Stock venturi no screen, aluminum carb body. 30% nitro.

4.1 x 4.1N
Static 24,790 rpm / 7.4oz thrust / .127hp / 94.74w / 96.2 mph
Unloaded 30,492 best on Vid 1 / 118.4 mph per prop calc.
Vid 2 best pass 30,361 rpm. 117.8 mph

Doppler should have it tad over 120mph will check - fastest Lil Speedy has gone.
Just getting started with props too. Old record 106mph with the TD .020.
Thrust was not an issue it was a freight train into the wind. Scary to fly it
is loud and very fast all over the place no breather time less you throttle down.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bCto2zdGUY&feature=youtu.be https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5bCto2zdGUY&feature=youtu.be

NANO - TD .010

2.56 x 4N
Static 28,858 rpm / 109.3 mph / .028hp / 21w / 1.5oz thrust / 30% nitro.
Unloaded best pass 34,734 rpm / 131.5mph !!!!! per prop calc / will check doppler.
This thing is a freaking bullet with the new prop. Will post vid.

Data per 1 vid review have 3 vids on this firecracker!

Per data above vid 1

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3i4r2kDOBlQ&feature=youtu.be
1.5oz static thrust will be even better with the NANO II at 2oz RTF.
Should do about 144 mph with the same prop.

You;ve got some nice, crisp audio to work with...!
How much aileron do you have either side of zero now...?
It looks like a great day to be at your field.

Thank you Chuck
I need to trim ailerons down on the Lil Speedy bit twichy at the new speeds.
Elevator is 28% / Ailerons 19% / throw is about 1/4in on all surfaces

NANO / Ailerons 30% / Elevator 40%

Doppler check on the Lil Speedy shows 117.01 mph
30, 361 rpm on that pass / prop calc says 117.88 mph

1:47 mins. into the vid

Here is the prop that did it on the plane.
in the mail today came in some already narrow 4 x 4.5 carbon / nylon
drone race props strong enough at the hub with some beef for 1/2A
Nice airfoil and thinner, will back cut one and leave one stock see
how each do expect 4x4.5N to hit 32k / 136.4 mph.

Remember, if you aren't throwing prop blades once in awhile, your props are probably built too heavy.....

Doppler on the NANO

209.83 Km h / 130.38 mph
2:47 mins into the vid 35,184 rpm / 133.27 mph

I think the rules change with the small props the material to load
is different for the NANO / The new props for the Lil Speedy
are thin great props for more speed. but I need a 3.75x5N for
some real top end could get 152 mph at 32k

This stuff is getting insane with the possibilities a NANO style
Cox .049 could see 150 mph

For now a back cut on the new carbon / nylon could do 34k
If I really do a good job making it NARROW.

Practice cut on the right hand prop.. you get both props per package
when buying drone props.

Nice and Narrow will have to add 2 extra plug shims perhaps

4 x 4.5N (blade at the hub untouched)

The cut N style prop will be perfect for the TD .020 as a 3 x 4.5N
Could see 150.
