Hi Dave,
It is the same engine. After fixing the carb body (split) it runs like a top. The glider is clean and heavy enough it overruns the prop pretty quick in a dive with the engine squealing away. Hope I can find a couple of those 4 x 2.5's. I don't think I'll risk running the plastic 3.5x3. I ran though a few primes and the lack of inertia relative to the 4.5x2 is cool - instant rev. If I get up the gumption I'll putter with a mold.. if my eyes are good enough at this scale anymore.

I installed the servos and did the torque rods. Everything moves with ease no binding. I will use a set of two thinner rubber bands crossing each other and 1 set going straight back on the carbon dowels for a total of 6 rubber bands should be enough to hold the wing in place yet shear away if I should cartwheel the plane.
I plan to use nyrod slipped over the torque rods then drill some small holes thru the sides to accept the servo rods. It would have been nice if I had more room inside the fuselage to hide everything but there is a encroaching fuel tank going just past the leading edge, 3 servo's, RX, and switch right above the wing.

The large pink bands simulate the footprint of 4 smaller bands crossing in the second pic to make sure I had room without fuss.
I used a single wedge shaped surface on the hinge line as I will use the bottom and top sheets of monokote to retain the flaps and ailerons the single side wedge allows the monokote to stick well / the top will be gapless where it counts the most and gapless when the servo drop the flaps down all the way. I imagine I won't need full flaps on landings it should glide in pretty good at 10.8oz RTF. So will cover the wing this weekend at last! Note the aileron servo is in the middle of the wing to avoid any differential throw, it was a tad weird cutting an offset bay for the servos (wanting aesthetic balance) but this also allowed the flap servo arm to hit in the center where it belongs.

Those HS 45s are very "capable looking" servos from where I sit. I've never laid eyes on them before.
I've had some trouble trying to use iron on film with the single bevel hinging. The top would form a bulge instead of staying perfectly flat.
I've seen other builders do a nice looking job of it though.

I use ample heat and a smooth surface, to help keep the stress off I expose a slight hairline gap on the underside monokote so when the top sheet goes on it melts the two sticky sides together working the tip of the iron or with a detail iron. That extra effort will help at hi speeds with 40 size planes and under providing you have minimum play in the linkages.

I think the HS-45HB will work just fine 14oz at 4.8 I will be at 6v do to having 5 servos so the torque will jump up to about 20oz. / 1.25lbs.
Carbon primary gears and bearing should do the trick. 8ish grams per servo.

I've had good luck with the Futaba 3114's lately. they do 21oz at 4.8, weigh 7.8g and are as reliable as most other things Futaba makes. I have had such bad luck with the HS55's as well as a ton of failures with their feather receivers that I have kind of sworn off Hitec for a while. I'll take a $2 Chineese 9g over a HS55 all day long.

When they first came out, the HS -55s just barely performed well enough to entice me to use them for at least a few years before I saw better options..
I've got some FORA and Cyclon [even a piped G&Z.061] powered projects that used them. Those were the days when you really did say a small prayer before every launch. I used GWS RXs and 150 mah NICADS, too..!

I have switched to all berg recievers for my 1/2a stuff and have had zero failures. I had good luck with the Great Planes B-8 servos when they were available too. I think they might have been made by Futaba,

I bought a feather RX back in the day and it was junk getting hits all the time. I ended up going with GWS 4ch for speed planes never a glitch.
The HS 55 back in the day seemed too bulky and so went with GWS servos on many of the small planes along with the wee lil clear light blue 4.2g servos for indoor flying for about 3yrs.
The Skorch will use a non flight tested 6ch Spektrum RX (fingers crossed)

I've never [badly] crashed my Spektrum Park Flyer RX after several years since it was new.
Figuring out elevon pitch trim is the only issue I've had. The case and pins are fragile looking but they must have done a good job of engineering the solder connections to the circuit board.
The battery pack that came with the radio was garbage, so that is a hidden cost.

Mine showed up with some AA for the transmitter and spektrum written on the cells.
I changed them out for some NiZn cells to up the voltage and give me more field time. Now lasts two to 3 trips to the field before recharge. Prior to that the spektrum batteries would not seem to last too many flights as the transmitter is rather thirsty and that annoying low battery warning would sound off...ugg so would shut down the day leaving me to reluctantly go home.
Like you with the elevon trim learning curve set up I will have to sort out the flaps for switching back and forth from stunt to presets during downwind landing vs into the wind. Many times the Lil Speedy had to dog leg it down wind from a low pass ending with a engine sputtering out of fuel. So looking forward to some extra applied lift to avoid cartwheels and bent landing gear

I used to land a Morris Hobbies SuDoKoi with elevator coupled flaps up wind, down wind...it didn't really matter. It was able to land with a faulty elevator servo so nicely I didn't realize right away that the servo had died. I just left the plane in "full stunt" mode most of the time after getting really acquainted with it.
Maybe not the greatest 3D plane, but it was a great sport plane with those flaps. Moving the flaps in sync with the elevator was also fun to explore

Popular plane when it came out and was imulated up to a 52cc size seen at a big bird fun fly.
The last time I had stunt flaps on anything was a 82in triple taper elliptical 4 servo wing big and bold up close flying max speed was around 55mph.
Prior to that I had one in a 30 size relatively fast plane, very light so much so I was able to put a OS 26 surpass on the nose and fly up close. For 1/2A
this should be yet another step for small field flying 1oz at a time.

I think the spectrum is the logical choice for 1/2a today with their small receivers. When I moved all my big planes to 2.4 I ended up with some great fm radios left over. So I fly my 1/2a stuff on a 7c, 2-6ex's and a 4ex. So I just grabbed more berg receivers at bargain prices when everyone was switching to 2.4

I did the same thing for a while, Berg 4L receivers etc. Then, when I finally bought a DX6 for parkies, and looked at 2.4 micro receivers.. oh boy. Then I found $5 Lemon Rx receivers (that work as well as any Spektrum micro Rx so far), Smart LiPO's.. hooked. But on some models I don't care about the antenna and I still fly a bunch of 72mHz as well.

For the 020 hummer I am going to try the 6g Cox servos from Bernie. He had a sale a while back and I picked some up. Anyone have any experience with them? I figure at 10oz torque they are plenty for the 020. I have found the China 6g ones to be complete junk.

Yessa I want to run three in a row rudder elevator and throttle on the next build. The Skorch couldnt make three in a row by a long shot way too narrow with the 45's

Well a Christmas miracle has happened the little elves have finally covered that 4 surface pain in the butt wing.
I want a number on the wing perhaps 49 Ode to the 1/2A may do some more checkerboard action too.
After that down to hooking up the 6 linkages to the surfaces and figuring out the flap settings on the TX.
Shown with a APC 4.75 x 4 most likely the prop I will use on the maiden flight.

It was flyable until boxing day here, then the forecast said high winds for several days. And ice pellets too apparently. I just scooted in from two short parkie flights out back.. blah.

I just checked the extended forecast rain, cold and windy Thurs / Fri.
Sat. sunny 63 deg 10 to 15 mph winds (doable)
Sun. sunny 60 deg winds better at 5 to 10 less fuss to trim it up.
Going with ol number 49 cutting out the numbers now.
