Speaking of units, are your control throws in degrees (°) or really a percentage (%) of something?

With a new plane I like to start with about 15° throws on everything, measuring throws in cm (or inch) changes to much from one plane to another depending on the size of the control surfaces etc, while the angle is a much safer measure. I have an old piece of balsa made at 15°, especially for this purpose. The goal is to have 100% throw on the servo side, which should then give about 15° deflection of the control surface (reduced throws, in dual rate, can then be set around 80% on the radio). Ailerons can/should be set up asymmetrically, and the the lower throw (i.e. aileron down) will be less than 15°.

Hey Kris good to hear from you, hope all has been well perhaps you can share a project with us.
From the hinge line I am down to 9 degrees up and 7 degrees down deflection for the next test flight.

Thank you Lily the plane has flown one test flight rates where too high at the speed it was going.
Hope to get some good video this weekend weather permitting. Been really stormy here lately.

Here is a vid of the NANO I version TD .010

My own projects are just so slow in their progress in comparison to some of the threads here, I don't know how you guys find the time. Between my daytime job and home-time chores, there has not been must spare time this winter and spring it seems...

I've made another car engine conversion that looks promissing, an OPS .12 engine with DIY a bell-crank to the stock carb. I've also bench run a few larger engines for an old project I would like to finish, but that's about it...

Below 10° of throw should be low enough I think, just make sure that you are still using all, or most, of the servo throw, and don't just limit it on the radio. The cheap lightweight servos are not accurate enough in terms of repeatability and re-centering etc. so you need to use the full trow that they can provide, and lower the surface throw by changing the linkage instead.

The car conversions are fun I have done many, it was a whirl wind of conversions for a while 6 in total lol.
Using a long stem bullet spinner is the trick for prop use and 90 degree fuel nipples to isolate the NV from
being in the way of the prop solves that issue. The bell crank is a good trick, approached the idea too for
the slide carbs but found the flex line in nyrod tube was a nice clean fix. Late night when the dust clears
is my trick for finding time lol that and weekends few hours here there adds up in short order. Small simple
planes build up fast.

The throw on the original NANO are more depends of size / weight and speed.
On purpose the ailerons are set up as shown for ease of access with the rubber bands.
The plane is so small the push rods are only 10.3 mm above the wing. If the servo horns
where very short then the angle to the aileron horns would be too much to get a good push.

Looking at getting a TD .09 in the air
I cut a MA 7x6 down with back cut and tips thinned up / rounded.

5x6N / Static / 19.4k rpm / 10.5oz thrust / 110mph / 147w
Unloaded est. 24k +/ up to 140 mph down wind. Should be able to
keep this one under 8oz RTF thrust to weight will make for a very
loud screaming beast with no regard to wind making it a weekend
choice when the weather is not so savory for the smaller engines.

I have all the gear to start building this one, full size rendering.
3ch Triple tapper SWR wing 98 Sq. In.

Engine has many custom performance enhancements

- High speed performance crank
- Valentine Turbo Plug Head / OS Turbo Plug
- Kustom Kraftsmans 128 tpi NV
- KK big bore venturi
- Throttle sleeve - cut for SPI
- SPI Cylinder - dual bypass ports (not the RC version)
- Valentine .049 bullet spinner tapped 6-32 thread
- KK .09 back plate with fine hole pressure tap.
- Aluminum carb body
- Phenolic thrust washer (for elect. starts)

Welp had to modify the Dart a hair for the Sullivan fuel tank. Interesting this one is a pylon style
stated a SS1. Filled up a known 1oz tank poured it into the SS1 took 1.5oz so perfect for the .09
as it takes up room in lieu of the small fuselage. Hope so see 4.5 min. runs. Servos are good
for 7.2v and put out 27oz - long leads need to be shorter 10.2g actual weight ea. Stated 9g
perhaps just the servo is and half the wire.

Full size pics with template should anyone wish build a little speed monster.
Two SIG airfoil balsa planks will be used to create a fully symmetrical airfoil.
Wing is 5.5 x 2.5 x 26" / 104 Sq. In. tad less at the saddle. Landing gear is just
for looks the plane is too compact for landing on grass just did the rendering
for fun.

That plane would be a good candidate for your little AP .09 and a pipe, if you could fit one on somewhere. Maybe a tad more wing area for the extra oz or whatever it would be. I don't think you have run the AP on a plane yet? If it is to slow, the AP .15 will fit on the same mount. The blue head .15 is a different animal though. Much quicker and heavier.

Yes good thoughts Alan but the quest is to run through the TD series engines next being the TD .15 and
Mk .15 as a rap up. Its a good bench mark of engine plane combo to help sort our whats possible once
I revert back to aluminum cast engines and bearings. 12 Sq. In per oz is the rule of thumb I have learned
thus far for speed planes. N style props exceed engine design use by a long shot too. The bigger the wing
the more efficiency kicks in and so 104 Sq. In at 8oz / 13 Sq. In. is actually quite good when typically this
would be reserved for most 1/2A speed today.

The AP .09 and 1.5cc pipe is a big jump in weight as I recall. The TD .09 is 98g with
modified glow head / plug, spinner / prop and steel throttle sleeve. The AP with a Saito FA 40 muffler
(last thing I tested with it) 168.7g spinner / prop. With a tuned pipe I am forced to use a bigger fuel
tank upping the over all size of the design as the servos will need to be at least 50oz torque. I have
the Sirio .09 FIRE race engine it blows the AP out the door and much lower weight.
The .07 Vertigo and Pipe combo is light enough to put on this plane design but defeats the quest
to use the TD series engines. Tempting as I have 2 more Vertigo's collecting dust.

The DART or now with the rounded belly NANO -TD.09 is going to be rip roaring easy fun but also
my solution for windy weather which has kept me from flying routinely at times of the day I have had available.
Alas this is the non tuned pipe plane series underway I will be happy to go back on the pipe after these
are done. I already have the next phase servos and RX systems ready with 3 and 4oz round tanks.

Pic from Sunday's efforts, still no good vid windy and wet ground 1 rich
flight the ailerons are more tame elevator was solid but tad touchy still.
Ground is marshy with 2 weeks of flooding, perhaps this week a good vid.

NANO II - TD .010 / Trim Flight

Prop makes good thrust for the trim flight. Landing into the wind is an easy floater down
wind its fast and low on elevator throw.

It is dialed in enough I feel safe to proceed and pitch up to the 2.56 x 4N goal is 140 mph.

Link for full screen view:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsEHh2MEv14

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XsEHh2MEv14&feature=youtu.be Published on Jun 6, 2016
NANO II - Trim Flight 2.7x3N Prop / 2.2oz RTF / 30% nitro
Best pass vid 2 (this is vid 3) was 41.5k 118 MPH
Best pass vid 3 / 39,244 rpm 112 MPH
Will try the 2.56 x 4N next, goal is 140 MPH

1st Trim Flight:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55h7lu6aaSc

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55h7lu6aaSc

Note the same prop 3.7x3N on NANO I: u
nloaded 39,754 rpm 112.94 mph
RPM picked up additional 1,752 rpm due to the smaller lighter NANO II / 5+ mph more.
This is not doing any high down wind swan dives or on a well set needle. The 2.56 x 4 should
have similar increases and squeak up to 140 from the previous 130.4.
Confirmations:
110mah 1S provides good range peak charges over 120mah.
2g servos center well and provide plenty of torque.
Size and weight deductions increased peak rpm.
Long tail moment allows smaller surfaces
18% throw on ailerons / 20% on elevator allows rolls and loops.
Extremely small 1.3g micro switch holds position through engine runs
Plane is holding more constant speeds into the wind

It glows in the shadows.

NANO Prop Compare, made two new one's for high thrust and med. thrust compared to the known prop.

It begins DART - TD .09

Will be my windy day flyer for no mercy air slicing.
Yes sorta looks like another NANO build but you can't
call a plane this size a nano with an engine that produces
200w +

The tiny ones look great for those special times when there's no wind, but this .09 definitely looks like it's going to see a lot of air time.

Yes very true I have had several .09 designs over the years and they always had the muscle to
chop through the breezy days with stability.

A good clean .049 design can but the Lil Speedy is a square wing and has a flat bottom airfoil I had
made that one with just a single sheet of SIG airfoiled balsa ..mistake in the wind just balloons around.
The Norvel .061 with the Skorch is ok but a bit big for all out speed.

The DART will truly be blazing more in tune with the next level .09 where I left off last. Can do tests
with the Norvel .074 too its only 6g lighter as I have it configured with prop and fits on the same engine
mount. Also tempting to try the Vertigo on a smaller faster plane but the TD .09 is where it's at. This
screamer has all the bells and whistles less skinning the inside wall of the piston for a few more rpm's.

Fuselage is 1/2in longer than the original Skorch.

Update:
The fuselage is done less the top hatch over the fuel tank.
Weight with engine mount 1.6oz all ply with some balsa square stock
for the top bottom sheeting, ply saddle to firewall for the extra loads.
1/4 spruce square stock for the firewall and engine mount screws.
1/64th top and bottom and 1/32 sides.

The CS .1cc engine is 91.4g / TD .09 98g as shown Picco 1cc with header pipe 105g.

The beefy CS with its bearings actually works with the .09 engine mount
Would take side mounting and a little tweaking to use this engine with a pipe.
Some 1mm aluminum shims under the engine beams would help the exhaust clear
along with a bit of round file action on the engine mount to provide enough clearance.
I would not want to belly land it though at my field and scratch up the side pipe. Alas
der engine will have to wait for its own special built plane.

Pressure back plate came in today so changed out to an aluminum carb body as well.

199g or 7oz at this stage the wing / tail feathers and aileron servo est. 10oz
ready to fly using more standard size park flying gear. Stock engine is rated at
180w / 30% nitro this .09 is far from stock. Should get at least 20.5k / 116 mph static
for 11.8oz + thrust / 170w with the 6.2g / MA 5x6N prop and 130 mph ish down wind dives
could see 140 mph.

On order are some 3.12g / APC 5.5x6.5EC carbon props this should
nudge the DART up to 150 mph at 24k will trim to 5x6.5N if need be to hit the mark.
Very light prop compared to my modified MA prop with half the airfoil thickness.

On a side note I bought one of these ARF's today to use with one of my vast array of engines
not getting any air time. Seen them before on ebay but the one on RC Groups currently on
a new thread peaked my interest.
Specifications:

Wingspan: 27.6 in (700 mm)
Length: 21.7 in (550 mm)
Wing Area: 237 sq in (15.3 sq dm)
Weight: 8.5 oz (240 g)

Wing ended up as: 4" x 2.75" x 32" = 216 Sq. In.
I used two SIG airfoil shaped planks for full symmetrical wing.
1/2" thick will use some thin 64th ply at the saddle to protect the balsa.
Tapper in the front and back may sweep the tips on this one for a change.
RC gear installed in fuselage plenty of room, CG is looking good thus far.
All up weight with aileron servo has it at 10.16 oz / 288g as shown looks
like I will hit around 11.4oz RTF not bad the 5ch Skorch with pipe and Norvel came out to 11.8oz RTF.

The .09 has a MA 5.5 x 4.5 on the nose for the maiden flight little extra thrust will give me some
comfort on the toss. Per stock engine should do at least 15.8oz thrust / 177w / 112 mph down wind.
I used a T fitting and two line system on the tank just open a port on the T for over flow during fill ups
no hemostats needed if all goes well.

Airfoil shaping still required quite a bit of sanding as the rear tapper leaves a very
thick trailing edge near the tips. Sawdust aside all is done the wing came out
to 71g or 2.5oz. Average weight 86.4 Sq. In. per ounce not bad the wing is stout
and should handle all possible speeds.

Down to tail feathers and setting up the wings ailerons woot fast simple build. I think there is enough
airfoil to make up for the lack of squares. 216 sq/in will allow about 18.95 sq/in per oz if all up is 11.4oz.
Will use the last pic to doodle up the stab and elevator proportions.

Need to go to the store and get some more sand paper before going to the next step should I round
off the tips. The wing is a good size with a beefy airfoil ye old sanding bar needs some fresh stuff
before I commence sculpting. I used some of the scrap SIG airfoil wood for the vertical stab the
wide base makes for a good solid amount of area to glue down and should hold up to some 11+ oz
tumbles if need be. Looking forward to seeing how well it tracks in the wind with such a commanding
airfoil on the vertical stab. The drag is more but may be worth it on gusty days. 11.14oz as shown in
the last pic need to inset the servo, less 3 nylon horns, aileron push rods and covering CG is migrating
as more is completed currently 1.2in behind the leading edge. Covering and last bits should put it
spot on amazing and whew..no bigger battery or lead needed to fudge things into order.

Clipper 700 ARF came in the mail

Wing span 27.6in / Area 237 sq. In.

Total: 4.17oz -
less hardware weight RTF Elect. 8.5oz.
Wing 2.4 oz
Fuselage 1.44 oz
Tail Feathers .33 oz (9.3g)

Some light ply mostly balsa plane can't handle more than 150w from IC engine without risk of stress damage.

Predictions:
Peppy with a TD .020
Scrappy with a TD .049
Fast with a Norvel .049
Skorching with a Norvel .061

Good balanced prop will help keep the vibrations down.
$75.99 to the door my 2nd ARF ever seems like a
good trade off for the time needed to build one at my
age a good 18hrs while watching tv and surfing the net.

Seems to be a good light weight plane could do with a dab
of glue in some stress area's if with IC use and extra ply plate
on the nose. Attention to detail is very good clean straight build.
With a good covering job.

Sorry for the sparse attendance but RCU lately has been swamping my computer with junk that is constantly loading and loading.
Tonight, things are quiet.
[I've been lurking at Ford Muscle type sites and a jalopy site to compensate].
Your scratch build will look great after you carve the wing like you've outlined.
That ARF looks pretty decent with that artistic trim scheme.
I had a replacement video cam show up today from Crutchfield's "scratch and dent" stock. They say it'll compare well spec-wise with my old one, but this one is much lighter. Hopefully the microphone is good or else the doppler graphs won't be very easy to interpret.
My old flying field has a boulevard running through it now complete with curbs and street lights. There might be a few opportunities to sneak out there on the weekends, but it's amazing how fast the buildings go up.

Hey Chuck good to see you wondering what was up. Yes the video spamming from advertisements on here kill megs and loading speed fast.
Sometimes it messes with my comp too. I have a tablet that seems to get on the site fuss free must be a better software blend using less
muscle to open the page. Damn shame your field has been taken over!!!! You can use google earth or map quest satellite to locate possible
green zones in your area. I have used it to find ponds for running my boats amazing how things can be right up your nose just around the
corner. Good to hear you have another video camera option!! Will be nice to see some activity on here other than my vids. Amazing how
many folks just log on to read but never share their projects. Tons of good planes and engines out there for projects to share.

Still have not made it to the store for sand paper it's a must do item this week lots of sculpting to do.

I think they have a machine that cuts out the patterns like vinyl lettering it is all very accurate in cuts
and in placement. Absolute 0 fault found with this ARF baring in mind it was made for elect. I have
decided to use one of my .05 car engines for the project with a drone composite prop 4x4.5. These
engines run very smooth having bearings keeping vibrations down. 79g Sports Werks .05 engine
165 deg timing will work with the Profi pipe for goo control.

We lost a couple of nice spots to subdivisions too. You tend to get forced way out of town to fly the nitro stuff. I just can't seem to get into the electric stuff. Just bad luck with batteries. I was on the HAMB (Hokey As- Message Board) for a while, part of Jalopy Journal. I tried to sell my 32 Ford Sedan there, and they kicked me off because it was fiberglass. Still got a 32 Austin Bantam Coupe that I kind of want to get rid of, but it is fiberglass too. Well maybe some day I will finish it. I kind of fizzled out of the hot rods. Got a PT Cruiser for cheap and it has a nicer ride and the air conditioning works.(so far, it is a Chrysler so you can never count on it though) It will be interesting to see the Sport Works motor go. It is a bit more modern.

Hey Alan how goes, my sister bought a grey PT Cruiser back in 2003 new. Goes from her garage to a large parking
garage at work at the hospital. Very clean in mint condition no issues over the years. I have drove it for a few days
once while my ride was in the shop, easy to drive nice lay out for the driver and roomy for its size. The .07 Vertigo
did well with the Skorch II, I expect similar handling with the .05. The carbon / nylon 4.5 pitch prop should get the
plane up to 115mph +. Flying small IC planes under 40in span has been working for me keeping me from driving
out to the local flying club.

My old flying buddy does that too. Flies leckies across the street at the schoolyard. Goes to contests once in a while with the little .049 stuff in the SAM events. Got my PT for $2,300 in great shape. I was goiing to trade my Vette for one, and this came up at a garage sale. I like it, kind of bad gas mileage for the size though. About 23 mpg. My planes fit in it, so I can sell my old 87 Astro van soon.

I think a PT Cruiser would make a great looking street rod. Even a "gasser" project with a straight axle, blown 392 hemi, etc..... since those '48 Anglias are getting pretty rare.
Yes, the HAMB jalopy journal is very strict about what they allow...to the point of religious fanaticism.
They did allow a 50 page thread about a FG 1932 street rod. It was a great thread that showed how the guy did so many great things with engineering, imagination and metal working skill. Shortly after he finished the car, it was stolen out of his garage when he left town for a weekend. I've never followed a thread that took me through so many ups and downs.
If there are lurkers here who don't post their .049 to .15 powered projects, I understand but without contributors this forum doesn't have much else to offer.
I lurk the car forums mostly since I spend too much time at RCU already and don't want to spend more time on the keyboard.
