https://www.pinterest.com/pin/431149364297418047/

When they first came out, not long after I saw photos of one with a 528ci engine bulging out of the front. Some of them look pretty good.

Soon as I find the NV (dummy) I'll get someone to film the Mini Contender / Magnum .15 conversion and update that thread. Overdue I'd say. It's a winner.

So is everything else I'm working on or should be.. Very hectic last couple of weeks, right after 2 week med leave too, with a packaging line installation complete with tortoise-nervosa infected sub-contractors, plus blitz trips to Corona CA and Louisville. And just got home now after missed flight connections, got to spend lots of quality time at Charlotte-Douglas arguing with cretinous AA agents last night and all day today. It seems that they are not responsible for anything, apparently nothing is actually within their control. Now perhaps that is quite true because it sure seems it. Got home just a little while ago. It's summertime, need to peace out real soon.

That ARF looks a lot like the Balsa Shark / Nano Shark. Mind you, how many permutations of a shoulder wing mini pylon racer with box fuse are there. They go like stink too, I couldn't be bothered to build the kit so never ordered one. This looked like a must-have for exactly the reason you're doing there..

To me it bares only minor resemblance to the balsa shark once you get past the swept surfaces.

The look became into view to the internet masses in the early 2003 range. It started to surface more regularly by 2005 by more
scratch builders and some kit makers. For years now its a known trick for speed even the rear scallop has been embraced which
took a bit more time for acceptance. Most didn't want to fuss with the secondary feature. However the design incorporation was
immediate with the sweep for those who knew the attributes would aerodynamically reduce tip vortexes even more. I have put
my traditional 2003 version horizontal stab and elevator to a not so traditional "extra" thick air foiled tall swept back vertical stab.
Typically I would like some lower bout extension to help control dynamic balance due to a high wing design in a heavy banked
turn. I do like the thickness at the base for better connection and it blankets the transition to the horizontal stab. The trailing edge
of the vertical stab on the Balsa Shark is superior if you don't mind the look, the large hole to join the elevator surfaces is not.

Mike do you have any vid on the Mini Contender curious how the engine did with it.
Kinda mix of fun fly and sport speed with some pattern abilities.

The PT Cruiser would look good with a dropped roof, enough room in the engine bay to shoe horn
some serious hp. Could flare the rear wheel wells for some drag tires to make it more thumpy rump.

Some mods the blue one would have been ok as a bucket convertible.

Made the trip to pick up some more sand paper the cut left a .48" thick edge to sculpt down.

4.3g just off the 2 pieces removed from the front corners. All up weight is down to 10.9g
CG is panning out nice no lead will ever ride on this plane. Aileron servo was inset down
onto spruce blocks.

Never thought of doubling up the Sig airfoil stock. I made up a 35 grit sanding block for such things. It tears through stuff real good. Belt sander helps too, but either way you need to be careful. Got rid of the red one. Still have the grey Bantam. No big block, as the wife wanted a 4 cyl. It was supposed to be hers. I had a 302 in a Bantam at the time.

I don't have any video of the kind worth posting, just annoying wiggly pixel-airplane video. My son is home for the summer, he's a media production student and makes videos for a summer job. I'll drag his butt out to get some decent footage in the near future.

It's no speedster, it has the 20% or so symmetrical airfoil that was the rage for Contender/Hots type aircraft for ages. But the .15 provides lots of power, much flying at part throttle, and longggg vertical lines (haven't flown it since last season, forget if it keeps going or peters out a few hundred feet up). Great for low and slow aerobatics.

Here is a good pic for size reference, the camera is
making the wing look big it's 31.5in now after rounded
the tips vs the NANO at 15.5. Tail feather scheme done.

Thank you Chuck!

Its getting there took a bit to decide on the blue for the fuselage and pink. the yellow / black
checkers was going on the vertical stab from the get go. Down to sorting out the wing now.

My race engine is heavy the rear exhaust CS .1cc engine is 91.4g vs TD .09 98g with props and spinners.
I look forward to watching the Cyclone scream on a similar design should be very fast! After trimming the
wings 4x2.75x31.5" I am down to about 106.31 Sq. In. for a 1.5cc engine. If going by cc then 1cc would have be 137 sq. in.

Looking at the Lil Speedy at with a simple 4 x 16.8" wing 67 Sq. In landing into the wind is easy. 179.1g / 6.35oz
Down wind it must be flown in fast and level any ballooning and don't get much of a chance to settle it down.
I think you could do 80 Sq. In. and get a good down wind landing.

The DART has plenty wing for belly landings and down wind landings will be gental enough on the frame.
I am back up to 11.16oz with the fuselage / tail feathers covered. Should be around 11.7oz Ready For Fuel / RFF
The TD .09 maxed out the fuselage there is no room for an upgrade I went straight for the throat on this one no
fussing about. The cylinder is huge in perspective.

The DART will help guide the way to the proper proportions for the TD.15 version. 146g with prop / spinner and
exhaust sleeve. I am thinking 160 Sq. In.

Bottom color of the wing is done, I need to flip over the wing and face the next decision. May go loud and proud
with yellow / black checkers.

Should I get disorientated and go inverted there will be no mistake what to do next....roll them checkers away

Need to do add the DART name in pink and the number 9 in typical fashion.

11.67oz covered less 3 nylon horns and two short bits of piano wire for the ailerons.
9.11 squares per oz. thus far.

The blue fuselage precedes the pink stab so same with the numbers.
The number is based on the 70's race car style. The blue pops under
any amount of light. The pink helps make the blue 9 float / 3D effect.
Left wing tip marker should show doing left turns in front of the cam.

Honorable mention bought 4 + 1 for back up for the ARF project.
These metal gear servos came recommended for the plane and is
installed if you buy the bind and fly elect. version.

Power HD DSM-44 Digital Metal Gear Micro Servo

22.2oz at 6v not bad the case frame typically gets 4.6 to 4.8g with nylon gears.
Seems well made thus fare coreless motor. Look forward to flying the ARF
it was the only thing needed to set up the plane with. Will set it up after the
.09 is up and running. I hope the metal gears do well the car engines make
good power and need the metal gears. Depending where you shop they
can get a hair pricey up in the low 20's. I found them here: $8.40 ea.

Done ready to maiden flight this weekend with a MA 5.5 x 4.5

Completed weight ready for fuel 11.9oz.

A light weight version could be done without the ply fuselage but I wanted mine to last.
I think its possible to hit 10oz. RTF.

15 days. Pretty good. It has taken me longer than that just to hook up the radio on my Honker biplane and I am still not quite done. Lots of trouble just getting things to fit inside the fuselage. You have about 1/3 of the space there.

Best not to mention any cool small fast plane ideas around here, someone will have it built and flying before you even finish the pencil sketch..

Time to test the engine ... it's alive!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S-GI9r82puM&feature=youtu.be Published on Jun 23, 2016
6,400 to 7,400 range is possible, engine run up prior to
maiden flight with some rich break in time. Has rear back
plate pressure tap and bored venturi from Kustom Kraftsmanship.
Valentine turbo plug adapter with OS RP6 (med) turbo plug.
Master Airscrew 5.5x4.5 / two shims..

Too late for full throttle but also in break in mode, thus far accelerates like the small ones with a throttle sleeve.
The large venturi has no problem keeping up with the pressure tap. Hope to see 3 min flights. 1.4oz tank.

Throttle sleeve opened 1/2 way to help suppress some noise:

More testing 18.9k / 5.5x4.5 / needle is not there but its results..
.2hp / 149.2w / 81mph / 15.3oz thrust engine is loud loud loud
Test had to happen fast with no needle tweaking just got it
whaling along then shut it down. Stock prop was causing some
vibrations going to need to balance it before moving forward.

The pressure started overwhelming things as the throttle went
down the pressure did not .. so no pressure for RC its full bore
or nada with that back plate. Removing. A full fuel tank brought
the plane weight to 13.59oz. So tank holds 1.69oz of fuel.

2nd try no pressure half open throttle sleeve
Cut MA 5x6N / 17.6k / 101 mph / 9.3oz thrust speed prop
was already balanced ran smooth. Idle was good
will test fly next. CG is good with a full tank the
oil spray is acceptable although twice as much
as a .049.

DART- .09 test flight with stock APC 5.25x6.25E / 18k / 107mph / 11.4oz thrust / 149w
Should do 22k down wind 130 mph shown with the SKORCH - .061 the founding project
of this original thread, and then next to the SKORCH II -.07 (35.5in span)
SKORCH II is going with a final upgrade with an AP .09 on a tuned pipe.

For the maiden flight the throttle sleeve was set to only open half way.

1 rich run started to rain 104.2 mph for a brief moment 5.5x4.5
Will save my custom prop till after I am all dialed in.

Static 5.5x4.5 / 17.3k / 12.34oz / 74mph prior to launch
Unloaded 24,467 rich / If NV on the sweet spot should do 26.4k
4.14 mins rich total run time so run time looks like it will be ok.
Tossed it and it slid in hard didn't have enough up caught the
5.25x6.25E and broke a blade with the vid still running I changed
out the prop and tossed again first bit was for 1.13mins second
part lasted for 3.01mins. I edited out the slider in the posted vid.

Rain was coming down steady had to bale. Sunday weather
looks doable for the next test. CG was a little forward to insure
good tracking didn't need it the thing tracks very solid. The
elevator was soft do to the forward CG. I have CG back now
will leave the throws as is. The ailerons seem ok at 18% on the
radio, elevator at 30%. The control horn is too short on the throttle
servo and wont open up the throttle ring all the way will have to change
it out a some point for now its ok to help keep the run time up and
power down so I can get use to flying the plane. Sun should be out
Sunday for better lighting and I should be flying closer to the cam as
I get use to it will try a 5x5 with the NV on the sweet spot on one of the
runs expect 27k down wind passes at 130.

Today's Flight report

Stock Prop:

APC 4.75x5.5E / 24,489 unloaded best pass 128 mph
Engine is still running rich I haven't nailed the NV yet.
Having trouble with a steady needle.

CG was spot on glides great, fully symmetrical airfoil holds its course and matching vertical
stab makes this one solid as a rock in wind.

I have gone from high screaming micros to torque and high pitch with the DART.
The engine sound coming at you doesn't match the blazing speeds in the actual pass
2nd down wind pass at 3:15 into the vid was cooking.

Thank you Chuck,

Yes two SIG planks makes for some curves for sure along with the other attributes. I'm glad I kept the course and didn't chicken out on the minimal squares. Normally 106 would be good for an .049.
Getting plenty lift and speed just need some good weather to do some prop testing the .09 has a wide range of props to use but for speed it looks like a 5.5x6.5EC cut down to 4.5x6.5EC should be the winner based on early tests. Should see 25k / 154 mph down wind dive.

Crappy weather but did get in one close high speed pass.

Then, bolt a Conquest to the nose of the TD .15 model and you're done. Oh wait.. you need to do a Sure Start dart too (No cylinder swapping, that's specifically prohibited in the rule book)

You must be the noisiest modeller around.. :-)

Cylinder swapping is a prerequisite. I got rid of nearly all my single port .049 cylinders at a swap meet. Funny, I was just going to type in about a Conquest too. I guess he is doing the TD thing. A fine and noble cause nonetheless.
