What a charmed life...!
I loved his generation of people. The folks I knew were very happy with very little.
Young Dale spending $25 back then on a toy engine would have ABSOLUTELY made any hard working father's head explode..!

Like a lot of kids way back when, our parents couldn't afford what was then a high tech toy. Back then kids would have to work around the neighborhood or turn in pop bottles to buy one. I think Young Dale made a good investment.

Turning down a straight trade for a full size airplane puts into perspective how much his prize winning model and being able to compete meant to him. Figure that the typical modeler today has 10 times the amount of tools and 100 times the amount of ready made plastic hinges, tanks, bellcranks, etc. than what Dale ever had to work with.
As members of this hobby, we were very fortunate to have him as a contributing pioneer.

It is a very interesting read indeed.

Notice how Dave Slagle's name pops up again?

Dave Slagle was [still is] another great example of man's creativity and ingenuity.
Neither the AMA or the producers of Mythbusters ever showed any interest in reproducing his "REVERSO" maneuvers where he flew a control line plane under a bridge and back up the opposite side of the bridge deck or where he flew the plane from a hand launch with the lines wrapped around a pole, then back towards his head before doing a wing over to repeat the same stunt, over and over.
