Here's someine who really needs the help. I always liked this one.. at what point did the pilot start realizing acceleration was not up to par, I wonder.

I didn't think he would make it. With such little power you would think he would use every trick in the book to get out of tight spots like that..!

Those aircraft are known for their "gentle" performance. This guy nearly made the Darwin awards with that botched effort.

He should have scheduled for a early morning take off, just at daybreak while the air is as dense as possible with a well warmed up engine.
Also plan to take off with just a reasonable amount of fuel to get to a better airport runway- then fill up the tank all the way and proceed on.

I'm not going to critique as back in the 70's with full size servos, nicad batteries, and cox reedies a click rich I've had hand launches that looked exactly like that

Hi hllywdb,

HaHaHa ! Thanks for the laugh !
You just made beer come out my nose !
Back then my Heathkit radio controlled 1/2A Honkers and AceFoam winged planes weighed 21oz... (State of the Art !)
One 'click' rich on the TD.049, and you were searching for altitude and airspeed real quick !

I think handlaunching is an artform, just like skidding a belly landing 'to your feet'.
Tried 'hard javelin' launches on a perfectly tuned for the day TD... always bogged...
Letting it fly out of you hand is the key.

MJD,
I can borrow a radar gun, and have a 4X4 sheet of 3/4in ply to hide behind to time the 'Toucan'...
I'll bring the other half of the plywood sheet to time any 2.5cc/.15ci projects....

It would be interesting how the 'Doppeler video sound' compares to the 'gun'.

Thanks for inspiring me..., Everyone here...

I am working on more 'personal hobby time'...

I don't post here much,
But sure do enjoy following along...

Thanks for posting your projects everyone.

Take care,
Have fun,

I'd love to dive bomb some poor sucker with a radar gun with the Toucan, and other things.

Dave was that you telling me about the remote radar gun reading setup using a wireless cam? Sounds a bit safer to me..

(And Dave thank you very much for the parcel on the front step - received safe and sound . Alas I cannot appreciate it directly myself as you know, but vicariously through my close friends I can enjoy its pleasures nonetheless. My Moth partners will be most appreciative. Sorry I was committed to our little company lunch that day at that new Rustik place in town, or we could have got together over lunch.)

10 ozs moving 150 mph with all the force focused on a spinner. The ballistics calculators want a figure for the diameter of the projectile. I'll bet the spinner would at least splinter the back side of 3/4" plywood.
I'd feel pretty safe with a pair of 3/4" panels to squat behind.

Now run those same calculations on the 2.5 plane in the picture and those "required" plastic helmets make about as much sense as the ones people tell me to wear on the motorcycle in case I hit a truck head on. In reality it would make more sense to wear a dust pan to make clean up easier for the paramedics. However in this case Grampa was right. You definitely could put an eye out with one of those.

I wonder if any of the F3 speed guys have ever center punched a cow? I'd be surprised if it didn't shear the wings off on the way through.

Seen a guy get hit with a .15 Goodyear on takeoff. Right in the helmet. Knocked him over, he said he was ok, no problem. Another guy hit with a combat was bruised and a bit tender. Didn't witness that one, ,but things got real quiet for a while and he didn't fly the rest of the day.

I saw a guy attacked by his own C/L Combat plane. He just got out of a line entanglement at 12 O'Clock and his plane shot straight down at him. He had just enough time to block the prop / engine nut with his free hand from hitting his face and the styrofoam wing panel cracked his collar bone. It was a FOX .36 IIRC and it chewed up his hand pretty good. His was back on Sunday to watch the rest of the contest.

Lucky it wasn't up to speed yet.

I dropped to the ground with Tx once as a Proctor Antic / .40FS tried to takeoff through my head. Got a little PO'ed at the pilot, suggested he look around himself occasionally and get his bearings.. in so many words. I think I was flying my old upside down Komander with Enya .60 TV III G8 and some European brand of 10.5 x 7.5 FG prop.. funny I can remember that from 1983, but I forgot what I my wife said she wanted for Christmas.

The answer to why I can remember it is elaborated in a fascinating TED talks on memory I watched the other night on Netflix. As an example of how cool it was, I remember the example he described at the beginning of the show exactly.. and I don't remember things when I try to. Visual, spatial memory and all that.

When you are in primal fear mode for your life these memories lock in and are never forgotten a preset mind function for self continuation.
All things born by fear or adrenalin will be stored in the recesses of the mind ready to spring up as warnings to avoid or as ques to attempt again for the endorphin reward.

I watched a HBO special TED show, subject was on advancements of prosthesis integrated to nerve endings via electronic interface to fine tune function.. cool stuff.
End the end the jest of the show; man is not broken only technology is when not available to suit our needs.

I was fondling some plastic sheet materials the other day, most of which cut beautifully on the laser, and thinking about these mechanisms. Linear slides from music wire pins through the slide valve and riding in slots in the frame. Hmm. Although a longer lever gives lots of squeeze for low torque. Hmm.

I'll start drawing something up, why don't we figure out a real tiny IMC laser cut valve DIY assembly for fun? If they work I'll cut a few and mail them to you guys.

Screamin' Toucan reunited with its long lost cowl.. hooray!

I flew the wee devil a few times earlier this year, but I put it on the shelf because I lost the cowl. I worked on the darn thing for ages and it fits "click" into place. About 2-3 months ago after a few naked engine flights, I decided the engine and fuel system were ready for running in the cowl. That's when I found out the cowl had gone AWOL in my workshop. I searched in all the boxes and bins and nooks and crannies and at my buddy's shop and the cars and...... ... it sat discouragingly for a while.

Today while rooting through one of the same boxes of covering.. down in the bottom corner.. Eureka

So now it's time to wring it out!

Yes indeed - I got a GoPro early summer, will mount it up on a bike helmet. I taped it to a construction helmet, but I feel too goofy standing in the community center field with that rig on. When I go to fly this next, I'll put the iPhone out on the strip to get some Doppler passes.

It all could be a big surprise and it only goes 102.. whatever!

Here is the prop I just made up for it. I have two others ready as well. This is an Eliminator E-5 4.25 x 4.75 reduced to 4" dia and thinned until it felt thin and the TE could shave a cat. So 4 x 4.75. I erronously mentioned it was 4.5 pitch on Ponk Skipper's thread, just realized it is based on the E-5..

Tested this tonight 4x4.5 composite prop from the far east. 24,117 static / 103 mph.
Up against the 4.2x4 - if at 27k unloaded 115mph.

Hey Ponk..

It's solid composite, no need IMHO. I wet sand with 400 - 800 - 1000/1200. You could put a clear coat on if you wished.

Look's like I'll need to unload to 34-35k to have any chance at the 150 mark.
