Time will tell how much I like the XLS .15, but at the moment it is doing a good job on these early runs and I have just been making minor tweaks to low end mixture etc. It is running inverted with no sign of caring.

Mike I have a XLS .15 they seem to be good engine for the buck. I snagged one in a auction and promptly bought a header and pipe from MACS products. The header has been cut down to within 1" of the sweet spot for my target rpm. What sort of numbers are you getting- prop / idle / top end?

I have used the ASP .15 XLS with a silent muffler from MDS and get following numbers on 10% nitro (20% all castor);

APC 8x4; 15000rpm
APC 7x5; 18000rpm
APC 7x4; 19500rpm

I like the 7x5 prop for flying but the engine doesn't seem to mind the higher revs of the 7x4. Looking at the power for each prop it hasn't maxed out at 19500rpm.

Thank you Kris good info to reference.
I hope to get 22.5k unloaded is the goal and bought a batch of APC 6.5 x 5 pylon props.

Forgot to mention one common problem on the XLS. The cylinder sits too loose in the crankcase and there will be losses in crankcase pressure. On a brand new engine there were bubbles coming out around the exhaust port when I turned the engine over. I sealed mine with a thin layer of JB weld...

I had to check my notes on that.
The Enya 09IV are actually quite light if you use the dedicated muffler that they originally came with. The latest one come/came with the .15 muffler though, and then I guess they are a bit on the heavy side. Here are some weights from my notes;

Enya 09IV RC (with 09IV muffler): 144g
OS .10 FSR (with stock muffler): 145g
OS .10 FP (with stock muffler): 160g
OS .15 FP (with stock muffler): 175g
Norvel .15 BB RC (with stock muffler): 179g
ASP .15XLS BB RC (with stock muffler): 201g
Fox .15BB RC (with stock muffler): 215g

PS. The Enya .19 V is actually lighter than the Fox .15 engine, so I wouldn't call all Enya engines heavy...

Mr. Cox-

I believe that the OLD Fox 15X is LIGHTER than the Enya .19 and even the Enya .09! The newer Fox BB version is nearly twice the weight of the old version, as you have noted. Some might bad mouth Fox, but Duke designed a jewel of an engine with the 15X. Compared with other .15s it's power was less but it compared much better with other engines of similar weight. The 15x weighed about 115 grams, probably without muffler.

The Magnum 15 is listed on the HP website as 193 grams with muffler and 167 grams without. According to the TH website the OS 15LA weighs 142 grams without muffler and 184 with muffler.

Thanks for posting all of those weights, pretty useful info for all flyers of smaller planes.

I have a 1970's Enya .09 that has been run with a TF 8X4 since broken in, it still hand starts. I lost track as to how many hours are on it. A little varnished up but it runs well.

I guess I'll have to measure them and let you know.. try to do that asap when the rain stops (again..$%^%&^). So far it has been running and tuning by sound smell and touch. But the Rpm is respectable on the 8-4 and the vertcial lines on the 2lb aircraft (dry) are very tall, and it will hover with someone adept at the sticks.

Even if just for bling, I intend to snag a Macs header and pipe it on the Contender.

I would run a 7 X 4 or 7 X 5 on the .09 engine. A 6 inch is a .049 size and would be too small. An 8 inch is generally a .15 to .19 size prop. Experiment with the 7 inch in various pitches. You might even try a 7 X 4 three blade if the RPM is too high with a 2 blade.

A 7-4" is kind of the standard for .09 and .10 engines. Normally the older steel liner motors like a somewhat bigger load than ABC stuff. I think the fiberglass F2D combat props may be the ticket for that size motor. IMHO they are too small for most .15s. I measured one of mine, and it was 6 1/4 - 5. Very thin blades so it should rev up good, if that is what you want. Fairly good deals for $5 or so. 049 flyer, was your .15 the one with the blue head, or one of the older ones? Mine is getting better every time I run it. Of course I have changed a few things, The turbo head I made seems to make the biggest gain with the 7-5 MA that I tested with. It seems hard on plugs, even on the stock head. Mine does not leak at the liner, must have been a Wednesday motor. I have an AP .15 that seemed a bit loose with the liner fit in the case, but it runs up even better than the last one. They are pretty light and somewhat powerful, although not in the same class as the blue head one.

The Magnum .15 that I had was one with a blue head and was a screamer! The problem was the idle and to a lesser degree the mid range. I never could find a balance where a reliable idle and a usable high speed setting could be achieved. As I recall, I couldn't get the low speed needle to ever close enough to lean the idle mixture, it always flooded out even with the needle fully closed. If I leaned the high speed to where the engine would barely run, then the idle would improve. I tried all the different sizes of venturi restrictors to try and improve things, no luck. Different plugs, different fuel, props, lower the tank, raise the tank etc.

I attempted to find another carb to fit, but the Magnum .15 has an unusually large carb mounting port. A typical .40 size carb would fit the port but the carb was way too big and didn't work.

Stuck an Enya .15SS on the plane and have never looked back. Problem solved.

Now I am 100% Enya, nothing else allowed in my shop or on my planes. Life is simple now.

I agree on the Enya engine quality. I'm a bit worried though when looking at the Enya website, they are only selling the 09 quickie now and have a total of 4 items left on the shelf...

Other places (like Steve Webb in uk) show similar stock level. I really hope they will be around for longer, or the next generation will never have the chance to run some real engines....

The shipping is $29 to here. I can get one for $10 shipping at Hobbypartz. It is only a bit more than $30 (each) when they decide to stock them. They are at least new. Odd that they have left hand props?

Shipping to Canada bites for here it is only 8.29 for both engines / wood props set up as a pusher perhaps some sorta scale craft.

Here you can buy two of the 15's new at 78 plus shipping.

http://hobbyking.com/hobbyking/store...ow_Engine.html A bit cheaper here. I would not pay too much for the AP .15, or .09. The blue head .15 is a bit better, a bit heavier, but not too bad. Ya, shipping in Canada sucks. Hobby King wanted to open a warehouse here, but could not cut a deal from the rumors. Now they want to cut mail delivery to everyone, and use a neighborhood supermailbox.

Just found his current email. I'll get hold of him and see if he's into it.
