Some progress on the Scooter
Hey Gang,
A bit of progress on the build, tail surfaces hinged and covered, I want to glue them on next, and do up the pushrods and controls horns.

Hey all,
found a bit of time to work on the scooter, glued on tailfeathers on fuse/tailboom, installed pushrod guides (coffee stir sticks), installed control horns, applied covering over glue joints and edges.

Hey all,
>H5606 - I was covering it with a mix of doculam, monokote and econokote, possibly some paint, but mostly scrap covering bits. the control horns are laser cut set from Flitetest store, the foamboard airplane guys.

build update finally!
Hey Gang!
Nice aircraft Turbofixer!
Here is a few update pics on the Scooter build. I covered the fuse, using Monokote (so heavy! and stiff!) I covered the bottom hatches in doculam. I still need to hinge and cover the ailerons, install the motor, esc and servos.
Also I got my garage 85% insulated, 2-3 batts on the ceiling, and one whole wall to go, then I can install the furnace and gas pipes!

Looking very cool Mr. Camel..!
This is a unique design to see featured at this forum.
I was surprised to see how much a roll of Monokote goes for at Tower Hobbies.
I've read that Hobby King sells a light weight iron on film, but haven't taken the plunge. If the order amount isn't too much I'll roll the dice on a HK order.

Hey All!
Thanks CombatPigg! I just took the plunge and ordered some "chinakote" from HK, got it a few days ago, I heard good stuff about it, so I figured I'd give it a whirl, possibly on one of the builds I have coming up, was planning on doing a Waterman Areobile for an online build contest, and a "Lil Misery" flying wing from 1942.

The World Models Mfg. Co. Ltd. is a Chinese company that sells a film called ToughLon. I'm not to high on it. It's a low temperature film, but my biggest complaint is that can blow off your airplane. If it comes loose it will separate with the color (and glue) on the airplane, and the clear film. Then you cannot iron it back down. It appears that there are two layers on the film. One that is color, and another that is the adhesive, which is white regardless of the external color of the film. Being a low temperature film it sags in heat, or sunshine. Another complaint I have is that the shrink temperature, and the glue temperature seem to be very close, so if you are shrinking at a temp that is a little too high, the glue releases, and the film pulls loose. Let us know how what ever you get, works out.

I think you're alluding to a miss-step in the finishing process on one of his (Steve Wittman's) airplanes that was determined to have catastrophic results but the info I found points to another design: the O&O Special; I had to look it up and couldn't keep from spilling beans.

Yep that's what I was alluding to.. the O&O seems to be a derivative of the Tailwind. The story has been related to the Tailwind in the past and until I checked that's what I thought it was too. As I understand it the fabric issue was de-bonding with lack of mechanical fasteners or stitching to back it up, experimental methodology, but that's about all I've heard on the subject.
So, it was a tasteless reference to the covering peeling off in flight with unpleasant but predictable results..

If memory serves me correctly the aircraft was an enlarged version of the Tailwind which Steve built for his cross country trips between Florida, and Oshkosh. Reportedly the crash that killed Steve Wittman and his wife was caused from peeling fabric. Sad way to loose a great aviator.

The actual sad part was he had been flying with it bad and was waiting to get back to Oshkosh to fix it. He glued the fabric as the aileron is only about 9 " wide. More about putting something off than true design problem.

Hello all!
I completed another 1/2a model, this time with an actual fuel engine, An RCM Joystick, with a Norvel 061. I still have to maiden it, has been super windy around here.

I have a World Models LA Racer covered in ToughLon; good plane, but covering not so much. I'm pretty sure the stuff sold by HK (and Value Hobby) is different, and better.
For painted finishes I really like Polyspan. Porous, so paint sticks. Heat shrinks, goes on easy, light weight.

Here is a chart showing most of the available coverings - films, papers, plastics etc - which are used in modeling. The chart is sorted by weight . My favorite coverings down thru the years don't fair as well as I thought they would and some looked great but needed paint for esthetic's which would have greatly increased their weights. I like the use of plastic shopping bags on models and it faired pretty well in the weight dept.

I learned years ago that the best covering served as a plastic bag to preserve all your balsa bits after a hard vertical landing.

Raycamel, can you do a short post on that purple and white covering job? I really like it, but I am a little stumped on how you did it. I would love to learn the technique. Thanks
