Mike, All my engines are open exhaust timed since they are left over Quarter Midget .15's. I think I have 1 Rossi, 2 Nelson's (plus parts and pieces), and 2 or 3 Ron Young Coxes. PM me with an offer, and don't worry about hurting my feelings. If we can't agree on a price, I might just consider loaning them. Greg

It dawned on me after my post, that of course yours would be open exhaust timed.. I was likely just daydreaming happily about .15's and typing without thinking rationally. I'll write you, though might be tomorrow, getting sleepy.

Just digging through some stuff in the basement, and noticed the Rossi bolt pattern is close to the Norvel .15, and fairly close to the MVVS .15, and almost close to the LA .25, for whatever that is worth. The Norvel is quite powerful with a large carb on it, although not pipe timed. The others, not so much. I think the Fora is close as well as the blue head ASP .15, but they are mounted on planes, and I could not check. They are shorter for sure if you use a spinner.

the conquest is a little lighter than the nelson, too - as I learned the hard way. Turns out my P39 QM15 plane (years ago..) was already dancing on the thin line of having the CG back too far, and when I swapped the Conquest in place of the Nelson for a race from a grass field without checking the CG.... it snap rolled and spun into the lake adjacent to the race course.

Fortunately, the rear hold down bolt sheared, the front two held, but just barely. The plane (in one piece) floated on the wing with the radio out of the water, the engine in the water, until it got close enough to shore to snag it. I still have the plane, it lived to fly again another day.

Hey Greg I finally PM'ed you.

I think I have the cowl all blended in nicely now, time to clean up the air outlet and make mounting holes. Works out easy, a pair of small screws either side into the engine mount will do nicely.

Watched a YT video last night showing a Rossi .15 MkII (open exhaust) turning a 6.5x5 APC at over 27k rock steady on the test stand. Holy snappers, that is a little beast. I need to get one of those props and try it on the RY Conquests for comparison.

However, very little of the original was harmed in the making of this mutant. I drew everything out in CAD and made all new flying surfaces. I confess that the fuselage is the kit original, I built it in about 1985 or so with the nose modded for an Enya CX-11. This was in the era of the hype about its performance, before it got tested objectively I guess. But 'I have the whole model in CAD so no fear, /I can build almost an original.

If I ever get the gumption to do so, I would like to make a more compact streamlined and swoopy engine cowl. This does look a bit like one of Dr. Frankenstein's creations.. but I'll use a pair of #2 sheet metal screws to hold it on rather than the usual pair of 1/2" steel bolts.

Assuming your screen looks like mine, scroll all the way up top. then halfway down on the left should read What's New and Forum, then directly under Forum is "private messages".

I'll send a copy just in case!

Or Greg, you could send me a PM with your email address, then we can use regular email. I'm not a fan of private messaging on here.

Mike, I just tried the PM "route" to send you my e-mail address, but I'll list it here too:
[email protected] I finally found and read your PM last night, but then I had
trouble with the site. Go figure?

Hi Greg, you weren't alone, RCU was acting up last night and I couldn't do anything late evening. Email coming.

Update - I wrote you earlier this evening.

I've probably mouthed off enough times on RCU that I should leave my email out of the forums..

The wing is 100% complete (save for linkage and covers after finishing) and ready for prime and paint.

Fuselage is nearly ready for prime and paint, once I fix some hangar rash and trowel on a bit of spackling here and there.

Now for some fiddly parts. This evening's project was molding and shaping the air intake. Next is the air intake and baffling. Elevator internal linkage.. PITA but inevitable step.

Aileron and elevator servos are in already. Will need IMC or at least a fuel shutoff. Everything fits fine now, but adding the IMC in front of the tank is going to make things real tight real fast. It needles very predictably on a bench prop, so might be fine with just the cutoff.

Even my wife got into the game, she said the airplane is kind of cute, except for the big ugly engine thingy on the front.

So out with the Dremel, looks like this is going to become a plug instead of the finished part.... It's the middle of dismal cold January anyway. time for a swoopy rounded cowl with a cool looking streamlined cooling air inlet. Or whatever I can manage.

Of course not, all in good fun!

You're quite right, it is ugly. I might do a new one from scratch, still humming and hawing on that question. There is no problem flying it naked if I am still screwing around with cowls in the spring.. doubt it will slow down much.

If I add that much paint it might tip stall on launch!

Actually the all up weight is really encouraging so far. Sure looks like a .15 model to me. A buddy of mine has an old Birdie .10 built by someone else, a bit rough but okay, Monokote covering, big Dubro wheels, regular gear, etc., and an OS .10. I haven't seen it fly yet, or even attempt to. It's probably fine although I doubt it can roll on grass under its own power.

There! Any better?

First sanding of the epoxy putty and a quick spritz of white primer to see the shape instead of all the blotchy colors. Getting there. Air inlet, baffling to come.

My wife thinks it's an improvement, good sign.

There is quite a bit of sanding in my horoscope for tomorrow, so it won't end up quite looking like this. But the Pro Stock Camaro look is kinda nifty. Needs some butterfly valves and a bunch of high pressure fuel lines hanging out.

Looks just like a control line speed plane. Maybe an "A Speed" or FAI speed plane with that cowl. Bill Wisniewsky's Pink Lady comes to mind.

That's a new Profi F2A pipe, the one that came with the Profi. I have a used Profi pipe, the same maybe 2 years older, that I bent the header to fit etc, and it looks uglier than this.. but it is the pipe I will end up using. It gives a big performance boost over the stock pipe - took the bench prop from IIRC about 27k to 30k.

The new pipe looks sexier in pictures. I'll probably do something odd like paint the old pipe in high temp or something to pass visual inspection.

The cowl is a standard old school FG speed top, probably used on dozens and dozens of .15 - .21 speed models. The original shape is what - predictably - got people cursing the model's ugliness. It has been systematically whittled down to this. I trimmed about 3/8 off the top of the cylinder section and capped it with ply before reshaping with epoxy filler etc. It's still quite light, well, will be again once I grind and sand a bunch of this outta here. But I'll try to keep a cool intake look.

So the possibility of committing to SMALL this year has a bit to do with the motivation on this, or vice versa, and the Scat Cat etc. Nothing like some pressure. Finances and holiday time are on the opposite side of the scale, but it has definite promise. I miss events, so much independent, local flying here.

If this all works out, it ought to move along okay. Reckon it may be a bit quicker than a TD. The F2A trainer here with all its exposed parts and two lines, does 200kph on the same engine. It's pretty safe to say a small RC model will have no trouble topping that.

Skipper - you giving SMALL any serious thought? Is there an incentive program brewing here?
