Been pretty busy lately with work and traveling but got a little work done on the plane tonight and got the engine set up. Pictured is a rare TD .020RC.

Used a Dymond 3.7 servo for throttle control. Had to recess it into the upper cowl to provide clearance. The fuel tank is 1/2oz, custom made by Pond Skipper from a small eye dropper bottle and rubber plug. It should provide 5-6 minute runtime. Made a needle valve extension from fuel hose and cap screw. Filed a notch on the end to keep track of position. This will be the smallest 4 channel glow powered RC plane I've ever built.

Looks most excellent, you are breaking new ground for micro size 4ch IC planes with the TD .020!
Seen a 4ch Pee Wizzer .020 the TD will be a big step up in power.

I have done a 5ch (flaps) with a TD .049 / .051 / .061 engines tested with it, great performer.


There is 4ch TD .010 on YouTube, custom RC carb with functioning muffler and pressure tap!
Flight is very good considering the amount of power on hand, it is truly a marvel in secondary engine component fabrication.

I have done a 3ch TD .010 with throttle sleeve, works great but wish I had added rudder for more acro options.

That DH80A is fantastic! There is also a 4 channel TD .010-powered Pilatus Porter on the tube.

When I first looked at the plans for this model back in 2011, I envisioned it with a Russian WWII fighter theme. It was funny because skaliwag mentioned the same thing and said he also envisioned red stars on it. I loosely based the graphics on some Mig-3 pics I found online. I wanted to have this plane finished over the weekend but I was distracted with working overtime and attending a funeral, not to mention a bit of motorcycle riding. I have plans to do some RC flying this week with some friends, so this thing will get finished when it gets finished. Trying to keep some balance in my life.

Made the graphics from good old fashioned heavy Monokote. That should upset some folks.

Great job TB. Those airplane noises are getting louder! I can hear them from my house.
Thinking about the tiny throttle servo. Small rubber washers made from old inner tube to protect from Vibes.

Yes sir. Will rubber mount all the servos. I often use "slivers" of fuel tubing on the mounting screws.

Thanks Patrick! The canopy didn't tint as much as I wanted but that's life. I will probably install it last. Yesterday I fuel-proofed the wood with Z-Poxy Finishing Resin. Today, I bound the Spektrum receiver and started installing the electrical bits. It's a tight squeeze getting everything for 4 channel operation in there without interference issues but it's getting there! Stay tuned...

Got everything fuel-proofed with Z-Poxy Finishing Resin. 1/2oz fuel tank and 400mah NiMH battery installed up front. That was some fiddly small pumbing to negotiate! Radio gear installed. Tail pieces epoxied in place. Used Dubro micro pushrods, horns, keepers, etc. Radio programmed.

Still a small bit to do on it. Unfortunately, my vacation time is over and I refurn to my 12hr shifts today. It was having some downtime for family stuff, modeling, and quite a bit of RC flying too. Lots of overtime in the near future. I always seem to work a lot around the holidays while others take off. Heck, I work a lot year round. I think my only day off for a couple of weeks may be Thanksgiving and I work the night shift before it and the day shift after it! Gotta sleep sometime.

The canopy has now been mounted but there are a couple more small details to wrap up before the final reveal. Then, engine testing begins...

Ye ole bench testing setting up that throttle, the C clip can be motivated to move around the sleeve
to get an ideal setup if need be. Should get really good run time with the larger fuel tank and some
throttle play.

Yep. I've adjusted the snap ring close enough for starters but it will surely need a little tweaking. I've got a TD .049 and .09 flying with the same setup and they also took a little time to sort out.

I was able to weigh the model in RTF condition on certified lab scales tonight. 211.3g/7.45oz I didn't think that was so bad considering the airframe required a lot more wood than a typical boxy "stick" type. Full house 4 channel radio gear also contributed to it's heftiness. After all the extra time I spent trying to make all the guts fit, she balanced out nicely without any added ballast.

I've found that 11oz is the .020's limit.
7.5oz shouldn't hold it back. And she's slick and not draggy.

Troy that's not a bad weight considering the size / style of the plane and full boat 4ch. What mah. battery?
It is a sport design with the ability to float in on landing with ample square inches across the wing. No
lead up front to correct a CG will for sure give you best results, more so it's peace of mind.

Some numbers on minimum wings for speed:
Nano II / TD .010 / 2.22 oz
Nano I / TD .020 / 3.38 oz
Lil Speedy II / TD .049 / 6.19 oz
Dart / TD .09 / 11.66 oz

wing span was a bit much was a floater with
just enough pep to keep it interesting.

TD .020 3ch Lil Speedy 21in span
Static 17,200 rpm / 18 w of power 3.2 oz thrust
Best pass unloaded 21,640 rpm / 51 mph


Would have flow way better with a E-Flite 3.75x3
Later Lil Speed II did 92 mph with that prop / same engine and throttle sleeve.
Highly recommend trying it for performance the engine rev is fine as the 3P keeps
the rpm in check less stress on the engine due to lower weight prop, low wear on the
crank case (side loading) and ball socket. For lower engine rpm the E-Flite 4.5x4
Static: 4.5x4 / 14,534 rpm / .036hp / 27w / 55 mph / 4.2oz thrust /
Should do 70 mph in the air unloaded with good thrust for vertical climb outs.




For your plane after you have enjoyed the power of the TD .020
Perhaps a strong running Reed .049 with back plate on the nose
might make just enough power to hover the plane with a 6x3
