Default Ace Foam Wing to Built Up Wing

I don't know if I'm chasing my tail around but I could have sworn I had a couple of plans for the 2 ace foam wing styles that were built up from balsa. Some one did them when they became a little harder to get a few years back. I have a plan that used a set of foam wings and want to enlarge it up 25%. Like for the wing to be built up as well. Anyone remember if these exist or is age getting to me again. If I can't find them I'll probably just redo the wing design and use something from an old plan if I can't find them. Thought I'd ask.

If you're drawing up your own, don't forget that a balsa TE was added to extend the chord to 6". The wing is a bit thick at around 15%, probably to add some structural support to the foam. If I were drawing up a comparable wing, my inclination would be to use a foil similar to a NACA2412; the ACE wing is very close to a NACA2415. Thinning the foil to 12% should improve speed, yet retain most of the characteristics of the original wing.

A simple search on Outerzone using criteria "from:Ace" will bring up Ace R/C plans. Some have been redone by someone with a built up balsa frame wing of same dimensions, if foam cores are not available. For example,

This is the Ace R/C All Star bipe with tapered wings:

http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=1355

This is the Ace R/C Dick's Dream with tapered wings:

http://www.outerzone.co.uk/plan_details.asp?ID=5747

It would not be hard to modify them to constant chord if desired.

Thanks George, I was going to suggest the All Star CAD plan. Gene Rock did the Dicks Dream CAD plan.
Reminds me I need to finish the Ace High Mk II plans I started oh so long ago.

You're welcome, Dave. I'm glad that both Gene and you provided these plans, as Ace R/C is no more. There are some aftermarket sellers of the Ace foam wings, but your plans provide a practical alternative. Plus, balsa is a lot easier to repair crash damage.

Totally agree on that. I always figured the only benefit of the thickness was structural strength. Especially with all the lightweight gear we have these days making low all up weights so much easier to achieve, I tend to think anything over 10-12% must be getting to the point of diminishing returns.

Here is a plot of a NACA 2415, with 6" chord, and offset lines from the LE and TE at 1/4" intervals, The chord line and high point, and a 1/16" sheet offset are also shown. If you want a .dxf I can email it. If you want add a couple of simple spar, LE/TE details I can sketch those in pretty quick, no filigree or portrait work. People keep looking for this info, all for the same reason of course!

Interestingly enough, an Ace Constant Chord Foam Wing makes for a perfect replacement (if fuselage is modified to fit) for the Sterling Minnie Mambo.

For comparison with MJD's plot of the NACA 2415, here's a similar plot of the NACA 2412. Like Mike, I agree that anything in the 2410 to 2412 range should be a better selection than the thicker 15% foil.

Here's a Minnie Mambo with a built up wing.

That's the standard Minnie wing, I have the same too. (Mine is built around 1980 from an original Sterling kit of non-select die crunched wood, a standard feature then, LOL.) It uses a standard modified Clark-Y airfoil. My point was if someone had an Ace foam wing, a scratch built Minnie could be easily modified to use the foam wing.

Check here for printable plans for Ace Pacer and Mach None plans with wing ribs,[email protected] Nice stuff on this site.

Thanks Dave for the website, I go back and look it over on a regular basis. The plans are very well done and print out on my printer at home nicely. You put a lot of effort into your site and it is appreciated. You have some of my favorite planes on there.
Park Flyer Plastics is now making available the canopy for the ACE Mach None.

Dave, those pics / plans of the "dicks dream" bring back memories - I had one with a pulse rudder only, peewee .02 in it many years back. I believe I still have the engine, it's waiting on a new crankshaft, and I still have the radio, too!

I've got the crank, just haven't had a reason to put it in there.. maybe when I retire I'll have time, eh?

Look forward to seeing the Ace High Mk2 drawings appear Dave-a built up wing might transform a rather pedestrian model into something that will be a low cost, no pressure joy to fly.....i don't think there was really much wrong with the ace High-its just that 72" foam wing just made it too heavy for good performance......

And a good opportunity to thin it down to a 12-13% airfoil!
(Just to return the thread to topic...)

Indeed Dave-I had two Ace High kits over the years-but never got around to building either and on sold them-along with the Ace Pulse gear-which I now regret. I still have unfinished, sitting in a box, the Dick's Dream started in the mid 80's and never completed-I remember thinking at the time-handling the finished and fuel proofed foamwing-that it was going to be a bit heavy for a pee wee to drag round.....now with a built up wing-(I've downloaded your CAD plan) and modern gear-it should fly like a dream-rather appropriate really.....
