RE: 1/2a Spinners for Cox?
Hi Remby,
I just got a Sears (Jet) Pen Lathe to make my own from hard balsa or bass.
May use 1" and 1 1/4" fender washers as backplates, or just go without.
HF has a little lathe for $30 too, but the Sears/Jet has 3 speeds that seem like
reasonable RPM's for soft wood..
The HF one is one speed - FAST or so it seems.
Sears Lathe is item #00921708000, or type "pen lathe" into search box.

Perhaps speed could be controlled with a good ceiling fan controller?
Dave

Back in the good 'ol days when 1/2A engines just came out you had your choice, Froom, Top Flite, and others served a large market. Unfortunately (or, more correctly, fortunately) because 1/2A is a small market segment, and the difficulty producing an exceptable product when the RPM's may go as high as the mid 20K's is so great, noone's producing them... Like you, I'd really like to buy some-maybe one of the venders reads these forums.

Tru-Turn will make a spinner to your specified size. But you WILL pay for it.
Dave Brown offers custom cuts, I don't know if he also offers non-standard sizes, though.

Flair in England makes 1 1/4 inch spinners in five colors. Their website used to show a picture of them, but no longer does. They are all-plastic, two-piece without a backplate, just like the ones in the Hobby Lobby catalogue. I suspect they are actually the same, but HL only carries 1 1/2 and up. They would work on a Cox, Norvel or anything else. Don't know if they'd take 20,000 rpm though.
Dave Thacker of Radical R/C is the US distributor. He once said he'd be willing to get me some, but I didn't follow up. It would make it a little more worth his while if a bunch of us asked at once, though it certainly isn't going to a money-maker for him.
If everyone who wanted some committed to a number I would be willing to send him a list and see if we would submit an order for us. Then everyone would have to follow through so he didn't get stuck with them. I'd probably have to send him a list of email addresses so he could let us know when they come in. I don't know what the prices would be, but Flair's prices in England were comparable to Dubro's as I recall. Dave only charges $2 postage.
Colors are white, black, red, yellow, and blue.
Shall we give it try?

Check with Norvel. I think they have a 1 inch spinner. Made by Dubro, perhaps. I went to using 1 1/2 in spinners because that was the smallest readily available.

RE: 1/2a Spinners for Cox?
Looks like quite a few in the same boat for this item. I would be interested in trying to get two or three at 1 1/4" or 1 3/8" size, the plans I have all would take these quite well. I would be willing to order the two or three, if this can be done I,m in. Could send the funds to who gets to place the order, or let me know about details.
AJCOHOLIC
Great! What would this cost, and can you let me know if somthing around 1 1/4" would be do-able?

RE: 1/2a Spinners for Cox?
Remby,
Real spinners for us 1/2a guys are hard to come by. I got this real 3piece spinner a couple of years ago from CS engines. It's alittle smaller than 1 inch. They have 2 sizes one for .049/.061 and one for .09/.21 and am not sure of the width on that one. Bad thing is they don't come with an adaptor and don't offer one. I had a friend machine a stud with different threads on each end to fit this Norvel.

RE: 1/2a Spinners for Cox?
I have successfully used Carl Goldberg 1.5" spinners on Cox Tee Dee's - - I suspect any Cox 1/2A engine would accept them. They were a drop-in fit, too.

RE: 1/2a Spinners for Cox?
Guys, I also have used goldberg snap on 1 1/2" spinners on 049's.
I did make a nice aluminum 1 1/4" spinner this morning. I also had to make an adapter to use on the cox. Easy but time consuming. I thought it would take me about 1/2 hour, took me 1 and a 1/4 hours...
I dont think I can make them for any "reasonable" amount of $$ I am afraid.
But at least I have one now for my Whizard and Cox engine Prole made for me!
Will post a pic later on today, I have to go back to work now...

BUZZARD BAIT !
If you can find out & it's a go on the sizes I,m looking for, I,m in! Anybody else? Let em know so this can work!
BIPE FLYER!
He just wrote me and gave me the link to the DUBRO Spinner for the Norvel. No details yet, but it is alunimum and fits a Norvel, but not sure about cox. The link is.... http://www.shopatron.com/product/pro...d=DUB776/101.0 .
PETER H & ajcoholic
Yes, 1.5" spinners can be had. However, the planes I am looking to build would take the size I am seeking MUCH better without the oversize being bigger than the fuse front. I want it to blend. Glodberg made a 1.1/4 snap spinner at one time I think..
Anything else?
thanks !

Yes, you are right. This is the only thing I have seen so far, again not sure it will work with a cox engine. Perhaps someone can inform about this.item. Still want to see the stuff BUZZARD BAIT may have a lead to. That sounds the best so far.
Best,
Remby

Du-Bro's "Prop nut" is a replacement for the factory supplied spinner cone, not a true prop nut.
Du-Bro number 776 fits Norvel, and number 777 is the spinner cone for Cox.
Bill.

Hello,
William Robison
Thanks for the info, again the site page gives little info such as how it mounts, if the "nut" is supplyed with a new mounting screw, etc. Here is the link...

Here is what I came up with guys. Would have posted earlier but I had 8 of my kids in my shop this afternoon building rubber FF models. What fun!
ANyhow, here it is... used a cox 5-40 prop stud and made a spinner adapter from brass hex, threaded 5-40 to accept the prop stud and also the spinner bolt.

When I say kids, I mean my students...
I teach a summer two week model airplane building course. I hand pick the really keen ones and have them come to my shop once or twice a month during the winter for building sessions.
They arent MY kids.... I am 33, have a long time girlfriend but no kids yet...

Wow, very nice work!
Do you think the brass will hold up good to this? I never did much metal work, I would think it may give trouble after a while. Very nice work on the spinner!
