This is my .049 Baby Trainer. I don´t know how she survived so many crashes. I love this plane. Now she is equiped with std RX, 3 HS 81 and a RC Bee w/ throttle sleeve (Thanks AJC).

RE: Pictures of 1/2 A planes
ORIGINAL: Neil Guildford
My Decathlon didn't really fly a scale speed. 3 attempts at take-off all caused a hard left turn on the ground. Then I tried a hand-launch, which was a bit light and caused it to fly straight into the ground (broke the undercarriage). One last try, a hard throw into wind. It banked left and then immediatly came under control.
I was flying this thing faster than the other guys with there 40 size models. Unlimited verticle, stall turns, axial and barrel rolls then lot.
Having no undercarriage I cut the engine on finals and glided in. It was easy until the last foot when it dropped, luckily flat on its belly (no further damage).
I'm going to replace the OS 15LA with my AP Hornet 0.9.

I converted my wattage decathlon using an AP .061. The engine fit completely inside the cowling. Plane weighed in at 16oz with an onboard glow driver, HS-55's, and a 1.5oz tank. Flew very fast for its size and was very aerobatic. It always drew attention at the field and most guys would stop flying to watch it fly. It couldn't do a rolling takeoff either. I always had to hand launch it. Landed great though.

twister55,
I've had a few of these 1/2a Stealths and have always loved them. They fly great and even make a Intermediate Flyer like myself look good.
One thing I didn't like was the 3-4 minutes of flying time. So, in order to fix this, I placed an additional 1oz Fuel Tank between the Elevator and Aileron servos. The square 4cell flat pack receiver battery rests on its edge up against the firewall (padded). After that I got 8-9 minute runs with a Cox TD .049 that tore up the skies on 20% Nitro fuel. Trust me, it really is easy and well worth while.
Note: The breather line from the interior tank attaches to the pressure tap on the engine...
The fuel line from the interior tank attaches to the fill tap on the TD...
The fuel feed line on the TD attaches to the Carb (Reed Valve)...
The overflow on the TD is blocked (small fuel line and screw) to allow the circulation via vacuum (think of it like an electric circuit)...
When you fuel. you unhook the pressure line and attach your syringe (whatever) there and unblock the overflow. When fuel comes out the overflow it is ready. REMEMBER to reblock the overflow and replace the pressure or the circuit will not work when you are finished fueling.
Also, make it so the cockpit is removeable (after the first one I didn't even bother with a cockpit...too much DRAG).
I read here that a couple of people were using two aileron servos. What a waste of extra weight. If you just heat up your flexible pushrod tubing in boiling water and hold the shape you want it works like a charm. Mine never failed or bound because I followed the instructions.
Finally, REINFORCE the tailgroup by using servo screws ( at least 4, 2 each side ) to hold the horizontal stabilizer to the booms. On my early versions this was the first place that failed ...ending in disaster.
GOOD LUCK

Here's Simple Simon. This was the first plane I was going to build when I started RC. I was talked into building something else for my first plane. I build the fuse which sit on the frig top for many years. It's all done now. Just waiting on spring.

My other 1\2A project I finished last fall. Hasn't flown yet. It's called Weekend Wonder. Used an ace foam wing and painted the fuse with Balsa Rite.

Yest it WAS very fast.
It weighed 226g (8oz) and had a Norvel AME .061 in it. I still have the wing. I should build another with an .020

I did the same thing with a single constant chord Ace molded foam wing panel to make a Micro Hots. Cox TD .020. I did this in '91 so the smallest servos were Futaba S133 and a 114 Rx, made a 50 mAh battery from cells out of a rechargable 9v. I probably should revisit this because I know I could outfit it for a much lighter flying weight now.

Cool planes! Here's my Herr J3 Cub. 48" wingspan, 3 servo's, throttle, rudder and elevator. It has a Norvel .061. I also put Curtek lights in it. Red & green on the wingtips. White landing lights, one on top and one on the bottom. Nice kit to build. Hasn't had its maiden yet. I'm also building the Herr Cub "windy day park flyer". I have the wings and fuse done, but that one is up in WI (my vacation build project). That's going to be electric powered by a Sprint 280.

Ya it has a slight bow to it. It was suppose to be straight. Not sure how or when it got that way. Those things happen sometimes you know.

RE: Pictures of 1/2 A planes
Hi,
I`m just planecrazy.I`m new but not a new be. I can build some nice planes .I have 17 years in autobody and after a few years ,,,well 2 years. But so far I have got alot out of this hobby and have learned mush. Most I have learned from RC forms and a good freind. But thank goodness for this and other forms.
I have notice this form has been going on for awhile.I havn`t got to read all but will be going over it again I`m sure.I have built and building a few planes. I have decide to add a few .049 Ugly stick style planes to My collection.I would like to join in.
As I take a break from the studio and send this post the wing is dring(thank God for ZAP).It is copied from a old plane that I have that is now electric. But these two I want to go with a light airframe and micro electric ans servos. To sharpen my flin skills.
Did I say I love this Hobby?
But any way I would like to add a throttle in this set up.Can anyone tell me a link or dealer.Or even how or where to buy cox parts .I know they use to care a throttle but that was use to.
I think it will be a nice plane to add to my collection. Can ya help me out?
Thanks,
Wyatt`s

Wyatt:
Cox engines are hard to throttle, most attempts are unsatisfactory.
In this forum though, we are graced with the presence of Dickeybird, Tim Wiltse, AJCoholic, Andy Woitowicz, and several others who have made or adapted effective throttles to the Cox engines.
I'm sorry I can't direct you to one particular location for the information. it's scattered all through the 1/2A area.
As you look around and read here and there, I'm sure you will find more than you wanted to learn.
And welcome, we're glad to have you here.
Bill.

Hi,
Well I thought I would throw my two cents in and my two pictures. The ugly stick is a old .049 that I redone "It is really really old plane".I installed a GWS 400 ,but going back to a .049 I have two on the way as I wait.On the bench is a freash stick the 400 is going in.This one is just to heavy for the 400 and it miss the gas anyway. As you can see I got alittle Hillbilly in me and a well lived in studio.
Thanks,
Wyatt`s

RE: Pictures of 1/2 A planes
Only the "F-8 Crusader" look-a-like and the semi-copy of the Ace Upstart are my designs. I got the three views for the Stinson Station Wagon and designed two sets of plan. This one is 1/10th sacle and my dad built a 1/5th scale. My dad also used to own a full size Station Wagon so we both painted our models to match. The Piper Super Cruiser was an old Guillows kit somebody found in their attic and gave me. Some of the pieces wrer missing but I managed to get it together anyway. P47 is from a Herr kit. The Quicky was built from "Model Airplane News" plans. The Sukhoi was from a 'fold out' in "Model Airplane News".
These next three are my designs. The F100 used a Midwest RK.049 Ducted Fan Unit. It was supposed to anyway, it turned out way to heavy so I never tried to get it airborn. The Ilushyn IL-2 was designed from 3-views out if a Signal-Squadron book and uses a Thudertiger GP.10. I bought the plans for the Gee Bee Model D from "Model Airplane News" but did not like the construction. I redesigned it and put in an .074 up front and Yoda in the cockpit
