Default 1/2A PiperJ-3 Cub

[sm=confused.gif] I recently purchased this model made by Herr Engineering. This is my very first model. I noticed that the size of prop needed is not specified.. Does anyone know what size ? I know either .049 or .061 is to be used , but any recomendations on what brand or size of the two? I wanted an engine that has a throttle. Same for the radio and servos. If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it.
Thanks

I would use a .061. The Norvel has more power, but the AP is a very easy to use engine. You can find them at

www.quantummodels.com

I like Futaba radios with micro size servos..
I order mine from...

www.towerhobbies.com

You can also check www.hobbypeople.net for other radios and AP engines.
They are located in Calif.

Thanks! Any idea on what size of prop I would use with this size of engine? What about micro-servo's?
Thanks...

use a 6x3 Master Airscrew prop (1/2 A Prop)

I use the Futaba S3101 micro servo, and Hobbico CS-12.

I fly two of these regularly. Build them light! Use light servos, radio gear, and small battery pack. The .049 can fly it like a real scale bird, which means its underpowered. I flew my first one for a couple of years on a B4R, then on an AME .049 both Norvels. I switched to a B6R and what a difference. I tried the APC props in varied sizes, Windsor (master airscrew) props, and Grish charcoal color Tornados all with dissapointing results. Cox gray 6x3 will pull that plane great. The cox will not spin as fast as the others but will provide much more thrust. A 2 oz tank flys it for 20 min at full throttle.
I built a clipped wing for my second one and added strip ailerons. It knife edges across the entire field and performs outside loops! I fly it every time I go to the field. I'm now building a Citabria from scratch based on that second wing.
My flying buddy built one and didn't watch his weight. He installed an AP yellowjacket (same block as the .09)to overcome the extra weight. His was a nonflying disaster. After several attempts and repairs he offered the remains up for $5. with no takers. He is my test pilot and has saved so many unruly fliers that I know it was the fault his plane.

I've used supercoverite and paint and black baron film. The model is very easy to cover as there are few curves and mainly flat surfaces.

How do you cover or make the seams on the body.. Is the film like shrink wrap?

There are instructions with the covering material. I put my seams at the edges of each surface and overlap by about 1/8". Yes all these materials shrink and bond when heated. It will take time to get the knack of covering with no flaws. Read the instructions of the material you select.
