Default Wattage Pitts

I'm converting my Wattage Pitts to gas, the weight of the cobalt 400 and the flight battery is ridiculous. I could actually save 2oz's going with an OS .15, but I know that's too much engine. I'm thinking either the Norvel 0.74 or the AP .09 hornet. What do you guys think?

I put a .074 Norvel on the Wattage Giles. It is stonger than the AP .09. I would use the .15 OS on a bipe. The Giles did great with the .074 and it would probably pull the bipe. It is a very easy conversion.
Keep us posted on your progress. Lynn

Hey Lynn, Have you seen the Wattage Pitts? It's little, 28"WS and 33oz's, what does your Giles weigh? Also are you serious about the .074 being more powerful than the .09?

Frank,
I'm going by the Ace Simple Ultimate, It takes a .15 and is about the same size. That extra wing takes more power to pull it through the air. Plus you can swing a bigger prop with a .15
You can do a search and see how I mounted my engine and there was a Wattage Cap with a OS.10 conversion also. Search under Wattage Giles and Wattage Cap. The longer OS .10 muffler had to reach back through the firewall. The Norvel .074 is easier to mount and is a perfect fit,
Yes, the .074 has more power that most .10s
The Pitts is a great looking plane. I wish they would sell these without the motor, that would bring the price down around $20-$30

It's a shame that it weighs so much. I thought that electrics were built lighter. That's a wing loading of nearly 17oz per sq ft.
I have built a few bipes that size that are under 20oz.

My ACE Ultimate had a 33" span and an OS .25 for power. It was heavy, but it flew great.

Frank I bought the Wattage Ultimate and am planning to use a OS FP.15 in it- I think it will need the extra power. I have a old Ace All Star and used this engine and it was about perfect. I was going to buy the Pitts but liked the wood fuse of the Ultimate better so went that way instead. Let me know how yours works- I would like to compare it to my conversion.
I was able to trade my electric motor back into the LHS for like 25.00 - so that was great. Try asking your shop to trade back in- they are avalible for sale w/o the planes. thanks, Dale

BF,That is with the electric gear. I think the battery pack alone weighs around 10 oz.
It gives the Giles as 28-32 oz but I know mine didn't weigh that much with my Norvel .074 I'm not sure if I had a chance to weigh it before crashing it.
It was a good flyer, just got it in the sun.[]

If that's the case then it may be better with the .074, depending on the ready to fly weight.

Hey Lynn, I have the Ace simple Ultimate with an OS.15 and it flys pretty good, but it's a bit larger and heavier than the Pitts. It's too late I just today bought a Norvel .074 for the Pitts, what a cool little engine, it calls for a 7x3 what prop are you using?

Hey Lynn, one more thing, what kind of spinner setup are you using, I bought a Du-bro 1-1/4" spinner but the prop bolt isn't long enough and has much play even with the smallest adapter. I'm speaking of the Norvel .074

I have a 7x4 Master Airscrew I think. The one on the engine is unreadable but it looks like the new 7x4 I have.
I didn't have a spinner on mine just the little alum. prop spinner. I had problems keeping the prop screw tight. I now have a hex head socket screw that holds good. The .074 will do fine.

Probably pretty good, better than that heavy ni-cad I was going to use.

I am install the AP .15 in my pitts. I took the electric motor setup and installed it in another plane. I suggest you NOT use the APC prop that comes with it, it is too much prop and will only get a few minutes on a 1100 Nimh pack. I put a Master Airscrew 7-4 cut down to 6 " and it has more power and flys alot longet than with the APC.

That is probably due to the APC being a wide blade electric prop, the MAS prop is narrower than the APC prop.
