P-51D Mustang
I'm building a scratch-built 36" WS P-51D Mustang. [link=http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXBY15&P=0]Here's[/link] the engine I'm going to use. Does anyone make a Pitts style muffler for an engine that small? I don't want a big exhaust sticking out the side of my plane.

RE: P-51D Mustang
I don't know about pitts mufflers, but I was at the LHS Saturday, and they had mufflers made by Magnum for Magnums of course, that should fit. They aren't exactly pitts style, they look similar to a stock muffler, only rotated to point up or down like a pitts muffler. I still don't think the cowl on a 36 span P-51 would be wide enough for a pitts style, or are you planning to hang it sideways and let the head stick out? I've tried to figure out how to get the whole thing in a cowl myself, rear exhaust would be ideal!

If it can handle a little extra weight you might consider the MVVS .15. You can switch from side to rear exhaust (when new) and they have a rear exhaust muffler for it.
You could also get a "tongue" muffler (like the CL guys use) for the LA that would be less obtrusive in the Mustang.

The Bisson 15/25 strap on muffler might fit.

You might want to consider a Norvel .074. It's as powerful as most .10s and is much lighter with a small muffler.

I have never had an electric setup of any kind. Just seemed this guy wanted to have no engine hanging out and had to make the suggestion. I prefer slime....but you must admit some of those brushless jobs are pretty impressive.

What's a "tongue" muffler?
What's a "tongue" muffler?
They are used extensively in CL Precision Aerobatics because of the smaller weight.

[8D] I am prestly building a Herr engineiring 1 1/2 a P51 and am useing the norv .061 to power it. your are right the exsost dose, kinda hang out there.so I cut the muffler off and added two small pipes that I cut off of one of my old pitts for a os .15. talk about loud and smoke [:'(] so I took a little brillo pad and weged it up the pipes. works perfect. good luc whith your plane
