1948 Frog "Redglow" 1.6cc engine
One of the most interesting looking engines in my collection has to be this Frog "Redglow" 1.6cc engine from 1948. It has a left-hand thread on the prop nut.
Most Frog engines at that time were diesels but with the introduction of the American Arden Glo-plug in 1947 there was a lot of interest in producing glo engines.
When I think about building an Nostalgia free-flight model...this engine always pops into my mind.

Strat,
Thanks....I have a lot more and am trying to figure out what to post. I do diesels on the Diesel forum and the glo's here.
I'm thinking about doing a run of OS Pet .09 engines. I have nine different versions.
Also early Fuji .09, Fox & Hustler .10 variations, McCoy & Cub .09 variations...so many choices.
Wonder if anyone has any favorites they'd like to see.

Hi Dan, I had a couple of Frog engines back in the early 60's,both 0.8 c.c. {049 to you} one was the diesel which was very hard to start up,the other was the glo version , which was easy to start, but wouldn't pull the skin of a rice pudding.Luckily I discoverd the locally made Taipan 1.5 cc diesel and never looked back. I've got a very old M.A.N. with a test of the Fox 049 ,seemed like a good engine, what happened.Fox engines seem pretty good , I got an old Fox 19 R/C that runs perfectly and has heaps of power.I've never seen the Fox 049 mentioned on this forum.

vauxhall,
My understanding, which may not be totally accurate:
Fox decided to get out of the 1/2A market. All of the old Fox .049 (and .074) parts were bought by Richard Rickel (deceased) and Randall Hopkins. I think new stuff is also being made. Randall (H&R Engines) first made the .049 FAI Special available, followed by the .049 and .07.
This address and phone number are from several years ago when I got a couple of the FAI Specials:
H&R engines
5024 Old Mayfield Rd.
Paducah, KY 42003
(USA)
ph: 270-554-3359
George
PS. Randall test ran each engine at that time and provided test results as a tag attached to the engine. He also included a note that he would exchange the engine for an unrun one if you wanted it that way.

Fox made several versions of both the .049 and .07. The FAI .049 was a pretty hot performer.
I never did understand why there were .07 engines as I can't remember any competition class for them. OK Cub had their .074 glo and .075 diesel, Gilbert had their .07.
Another strange one was the Anderson Royal Spitfire .065. Why not an .061 for international competition?

First, on the Frog. Does me good to see a genuine Arden glowplug on the motor. I still have a few spares around.
As to the 07 class, my guess is that in the early days it was simply another 'A' class motor for freeflight. Your right of course that there was never a class for them.
Regarding the Fox 07 I do know that Duke made them for Comet RTF planes and they had the Comet logo on the crankcase side. I have one of these examples in my collection.
I also believe that they probably were more popular in the early R/C days as the power wasn't a big jump over an 049 but you could handle a little more prop and that made the difference on some of those early crates.
The Gilbert was made by K&B for Gilbert and I guess that they wanted an 07 for their planes which were heavy. Unfortunately the Gilbert motor was made for a price and never was a sterling performer. Got a lot of them [07 and 11] when Polks was getting rid of them for $5.00 complete with a prop, extra plug and wrench, but interestingly no mufflers.

Dennis,
The Gilbert 7 & 11 engines were designed by Fox, built by Dynamic Models (Johnson) and sold as "Gilbert." AC Gilbert was famous for American Flyer "S-gauge" trains.
Glo heads will interchange between the Fox "Rocket" .09, Fox .10, Hustler .10 and in pinch, the Cox .15.
The Gilbert 11 could be had with or without starter and twin silencers. The Deluxe version had the starter and silencers The Gilbert exhaust stacks will fit on the Fox .10 and Hustler .10.
Since the Hustler .10 was a thinly disguised Fox .10 most consider it the same engine but there are unique differences. I have these engines and may take some pictures soon.
Also the Johnson "Bulldog" .09 in both std. and RC versions.
Whoops, just remembered I did a thing on Fox .09 & .10 engines for George Aldrich a few years ago. We were discussing small engines and I mentioned something about a Fox .10...George said "When did Fox make a .10?" Although George was deeply involved with many Fox stunt projects he had never noticed these engines. I made up this layout specifically for George and he was the first to see it. I was thrilled to be able to tell George about anything. He had such a vast knowledge of engines and the people who made them.
This was done by laying the engines on a flat-bed scanner.

Dennis,
I got some of those "close out" Gilbert .07's from Polks. Mine came in different configurations - some as kits in bags, some with mufflers, some without. Same for starters, and the props that did come with some of mine were pushers. I think they were ripped out of an RTF ultra-lite.
Mine must have been the last of the last.
