Default .061 or .074?

Hey guys, I have a question. I have an Ace Simple 109 that I just flew last weekend for the first time. It has a Big Mig .074 in it with an APC 6.3x4 prop, and it moves out pretty good. But I have an .061AME from my Lite Machines heli sitting in a box and wondered if it would be even faster with that motor? Any thoughts? Thanks,
Eric

I have an ace simple series plane and i have the .074 on it. the planes screams and i think it would do very well with an .061 too. however i dont think u will get more power out of an 061 merely because it is a helicopter motor

Default AME vs. Big Mig

I just thought that maybe since it was an AME versus a Big Mig it would be stronger. I originally adapted my heli to the .074 long before they offered the VMax7 Heli Upgrade, and the heli was much stronger on the .061. I'd wager the new vMAx7 heli motor has revised port timing versus the big mig .074. My thinking was just that it seems everybody seems to get their AME.061s to scream on crankcase pressure on their pylon planes, and I wondered if it would do better then the Big Mig .074.

Default will do

I'm going to, I ordered a Simple 400 the other day and the .061 will go in that. I havn't flown 1/2A in many years, and I forgot how much fun it was.

The main difference between the AME and the Big Mig is porting and timing. I would think that the .074 would do better if proped right.

I'm still playing with my .074's, so I don't know. If your looking for SPEED then pitch will get you speed. Start looking for 5 and 6 pitch props. You might even have to make your own by cutting down a 7x5 to make a 6x5 or 5.5x5. Do some research and try to find some props with higher pitch. Go to the APC web site and check there, then other prop mfg too. The only way to know is to try, and that's 1/2 the fun.

Default thanks

Thanks for all your help here and on my other post 2fast4u. That's a great idea about cutting some props down, I'll look around and start experimenting. Flew the 109 more this weekend, talk about fun. We must have had 25 mph gusts, that thing was screaming downwind! Talk about fun per dollar!

Default Props for AME .061 and Simple Series..

Several years ago, I used to race with a couple of different clubs that did the old Ace Simple Series racing, and the hot ticket then was the AME .061. The fastest ones that we could find seemed to be the P-51 and the ME-109. While I agree the secret to speed is pitch as the one post said, the thing not to loose sight of here is that the simple series Ace (now Thunder Tigre) planes are not exactly streamlined airframes. If they were, the smaller diameter, higher pitch props would probably work better (5 x 4 etc). However, with the stock airframes (club rules back then), we tended to find that the stock APC 5.7 x 3 props were a really good compromise between speed and thrust to accelerate through the turns etc, even though the few guys that ran the TD ebgines did best with 6 x 3 props. I was using CC pressure and 25% Nitro with one head shim under the Norvel plug, but this was all with the older (non-revlight) engines. On good days, I would be around 22K ststic at launch, and the way that puppy unloaded coming around a pylon would just make you drool!!!

Anyway, hope all this info will help...

Default .061 or .074?

Norvels website shows the AME.061 at a horse power rating of .34 and weighs 52 grams while the .074 is at .38 horse and 75 grams.

Default heli eng

the lite machines heli has the same port configureation as the big mig, not the ame, it also has a case bronze nose bushing a nice touch, the end of the crank also has a different tread so the mig or ame prop srcew won't work you ,will have to come up with something and a drive washer set up, the venturie is less restricted than the mig but with out the better breathing sleeve you won't gain much.
