Default VIDEO Shuriken .05 / VY 4.49x3.15 Static 32,380 rpm

youtube /watch?v=XmsJMe4nZY4

First Gen Engine # 118 / 1991 Shuriken .05 - VY 4.49 x 3.15 glass combat prop.
Per 2017 prop calc @
32,380 rpm
.37hp / 30oz thrust / 272w / 97 mph pitch speed
Needle valve around 3.5 turns out, very thirsty.
Engine is new with only 3 tanks of fuel.
15cc tank shown / 20% castor / 35% fresh nitro.
Brief run as the noise was outrageous!

Fastest, sexiest engine IMO -

I remember them showing up on the racing scene shortly after becoming more engrossed in 1/2A pylon and guys saying 30K out of the box but "not willing to pay $200 for an 'oh-four-nine' ". Thought they'd be around for a long time and had always planned on getting one when my salary would permit - even just to fly with occasionally if not to race.

IIRC, CS and Fora were alternative Cox TD beaters that were less expensive w/ their rough castings but didn't measure up to this one, including that beautiful anodized finish.

Shame that glow development and support is not happening at the manufacturing level anymore :-(

I was clueless as to what the black disk is in the bottom of the last picture and some research leads me to believe it is a backplate mount if I'm not mistaken -

Also, wondering what the rotary valve does that is attached to the stinger on the pipe?

Yes optional radial mount, the stinger on the tune pipe has a exhaust choke aka throttle allowing 3 ch RC.
Could be used as a kill switch in case of in flight trouble but does make a good idle with instant full throttle.
This engine puts out the power 2.8 stock TD.049's. The Shuriken was won on a ebay bid 670 to the front door.
If you have a chance to buy one only get the red first generation production number up to #250 extra effort
was made to tech out proper production of the chromed sleeves only get the .049 version though as the bored out
.061 caused problems with the head button seating correctly / caused cylinder warp. There after the 2nd gen
engines had issues with the chrome flaking off / hit or miss kinda of thing / only buy the .049 as the .061
still suffered issues. From all I read the good .049 1st gen will last if you keep the prop load / rpm reasonable.

I saw one a the Toledo show for $150 a number of years ago but passed because I already spent my US allowance. Kicking myself now. The Fora is pretty good and they are only around $150. Pretty cheap for a low production motor when comparing price to wages at that time. They are not as pretty though. Nice that Brad made a video of one running. Most guys just collect them and put them in a cabinet.

Alan 150 was a good price BV sold them for 215 when first offered.

I will be making another video here is the setup for the 2nd test:
This will ramp up the rpm in a controlled manor, to compare open exhaust
to pipe boost. The paperwork came with details the 05 cam with two timing
versions, I have not checked what mine has. Low timing is known to be 150°
Optional carbon mini pipe or aluminum was listed in the parts run down with
other optional odds and ends such as NV, venturies sizes and backplates.
The Glow Bee button top insert plugs can be used with this engine.
Specs and write up here:

For comparison, my Profi Rambler .049 (FF, proto speed tune), open exhaust, SIG Champion 10%, crankcase pressure, turns a 4.5x3 FG prop at 32k+ static and so far has clocked 164mph in an ex-electric pylon racer (with a 4.1x4.75 prop). Looks nice too but cast Al case and no sexy anodizing - but somewhat available.

Hey Mike!
Yes, your plane was in full air slice mode.

I tested a Profi 1cc with a APC 4.6x3 open exhaust hit 32,784 rpm
More prop pitch is needed for best straight line speeds / should be easy to push for the willing.
Have a .05 modified Picco, static made 164 mph prop pitch speed with a APC 4.22 x 6.5NE

Profi 1cc APC 4.6x3
