1/8A Speed plane
Has anyone ever built a 1/8A speed plane (around a Cox .010)? Sounds like a fun project.
I remember a kit that looks like a tiny pilon racer in RC Microflight (sometime in '02 or '03) for this engine.

RE: 1/8A Speed plane
Gold,
I have scaled down a 1/2A Shrike for a .010, but ended up shoe horning a .020 TD w/ throttle control and three channels that will fly in excess of 60 mph and flys great. There is a picture of it somewere on RCU if you search under Shrike. I am planning on a scaled down D-Dust or Whiplash for my .010 w/ throttle control as a winter project ( if I can get to it ). Others have done much the same if you search around here a little bit.
Give it a try- let us knoe how it goes, Dale

RE: 1/8A Speed plane
Agood place to start would be a scaled down mini-dust from winger models....they sale plans that you could scale down to fit your
needs....I have built a few of them and they are really cool but you will have to build your own battery pack and likely use a
bladder fuel system to get every bit of performance out of the design...do a search on mini dust for my post concerning the
aircraft..

RE: 1/8A Speed plane
How about replacing the 3X1.25 prop with a 4.5X2 trimmed to 2X2?
That should take the top speed at 30,000 RPMs from about 35 MPH to about 57 MPH.

RE: 1/8A Speed plane
From my own experience, the only .010 plane I built was Dickeybirds little stick, and I must say it crashed quite quickly,,Matchlessaero built 2 very nice models a chipmunk and a mudbug,,the thing is in order for an .010 to fly it has to be so light,,5-7 oz and at that weight once you get the thing going its off like a rocket,,,come to think of it I built a pocket rocket for my .020 and I recall it crashing at a high rate of speed too...90 seconds of flight time wont make for too many rounds around the pylons , but it might be fun to try....go for it....Rog

RE: 1/8A Speed plane
I am still not there (designing and building a .010), still playing with my trainers (kits and scratch built). The smallest I designed (20 years ago) were 1/2A trainers. I had bad experience in rubber power - the things are so sensitive to build quality. So I think I need to develop far more experience before I get to the 1/8A domain.
I do have the TD.010, and I have started gathering info.
I would like to have a smaler duplicate of that red extreme speed plane that one of the 1/2A experts in RCU community has posted images of lately- forgot who he was.
I am expecting:
1. carbon fiber almost everything, including prop;
2. 2 channel (elevator/aileron) using Microjoule(?) system or less with a smaller battery (no electric motor here)
3. Cowled engine
4. Extreme speed plaen shape or a canard (so that even the elevator will create lift and not just drag in level flight)
5. 4 oz all up weight
6. Should use a CAD software to minimize the frontal and surface areas.
Bipe Flier - how did you come up with the estimated speed?

Gold,
Sounds like a down right good plan! No need for a throttle on a .010 speed plane, just the extra weight of the third channel and throttle sleeve would be a speed killer. Keep us all posted .

Tim

Gold,
Check out this thread for a fast design.
http://www.rcuniverse.com/forum/m_70.../tm.htm#709204
Here is the airspeed calculation.
There are 63360 inches in a mile.
There are 60 minutes in ah hour.
Airspeed is calculated as follows.
Pitch / 63360 = miles per propeller revolution
RPM * 60 = revolutions per hour
miles per propeller revolution * revolutions per hour = miles per hour
OR
63360 / 60 = 1056
I wrote a calculator that figures out airspeed for you at http://www.missionwings.com/airspeed.asp .
RPM * Pitch / 1056 = miles per hour

Another idea! are you familiar with the RCM plan catalog? there is a plan #1128 which is for a .020 pylon racer it only uses 1 aileron only on the left wing because its just as effective on that small of a plane, it is for the tee dee .020 its actually close to the sharkface plan,, tail to spinner length is 21.5 inches, wingspan is 19.75 foam wing sheeted,,on its widest measurements, it is 2 inches tall and 1.5 inches wide....Carl Dowdy design..no all up weight given....I bought these plans 10+ years ago ,,wish I would have bought a few .020 teedee's back then ,,and a whole lot of other stuff too!!...If your a builder, there are loooots of other plans to ponder ..look up the Radio Control Modeler catalog,,....Rog
Oh yeah its called a RAZOR and the wing is a 5" chord , 1/2 " thickness
