Default 11 more days till design contest kickoff!

How many want a piece of this years action? I just can't make up my mind on what I want to do. I have just started to think about a forward swept wing type of job..I just don't know!

Later,
Tim

thats because a certain percentage of us are thinking hmmm, maybe I'll make a 1/2a taube no one else will do that....then we wait till the last minute and manage to hack up a cub or a "frankinstang" ...I think I will try the 1/2a 4 star, but I have to see the plans first...Rog

I'm in this year with my EIII, but after fooling with Autocad for a month now, I think I'm better off just cutting it all out and tracing all the parts once I get it built.

I've got it narrowed down to a couple of ideas. Is there a limit on how many entries a person can have?

I can't decide between an R/C Manx Cat or a conventional twin for two .010s - maybe both I hope.

Well, I'll give a spoiler. I'm looking at doing a 1/2a Van's RV-9. But somebody has GOT to come help me with this garage!!! Moving is kinda like buying a PICA kit. Took everything out of the old house and can't get it into the new house. (With twice the sq ft.[X(])
Too may pans in the fire so to speak. Got the CP Express staring me in the face. I think it's mocking me...[>:] you can't handle me...you're to slow...better buy some 5% nitro...

I hate it when my airplanes talk.

Ptulmer,

When your airplanes talk it is a sign that you are using too much dope.

Well, I`ve kind of settled on one of two planes- both of them 30`s air racers- either 'firecracker' or 'eight ball'

I just love those planes from that era-

I'm think of doing something wacky again, considering my hiperbipe didn't go according to plan.

Do the rules restrict a build to an all original design or can a guy do a cool mod from a published plan. How much mod is enough?

Well really all it says is "designed and built my the modeler". I am ok with alittle kit bashing. just bash the crap out of it. My Sniper design from last year is really not much more than a bashed LS150. With a change here and change there it's a different plane on the LS150 platform.

Tim

Yes the intent was to develop our design skills and show originality - not scale down an existing design, or build a kit. However, I am also in favour of allowing a kit/plans built as a starting point, as long as there is some design elements that show the builders originality, ingenuity, etc.

Just my opinions...

It's supposed to be your own design, and some have suggested that a scale model shouldn't even count, but if it makes you try something new then I say go for it. I feel that the purpose of the contest is to challenge the builder to push themsleves and if it is a first time scratch build, then great! In fact, maybe it should be called a 1/2A Design Challenge, instead of a contest.

Yes, I agree also it's a design contest, not a "shrink a Astro-Hog" or something like that. As far as scale designs go, it's still a design contest to bring that (full size) airplane shape down to the size we model, and have it fly. Of course, there are all sorts of grey areas, too...

A mate of mine bought a bag of new wooden 7*4 props at a gathering a couple of years ago. He was over the moon and wanted to use them for 1/2A Texaco. That was until we noticed the little 'P' after the prop size - pusher props. So now a bunch of us have wooden 7*4 pushers. I'd like to use mine in the contest on a high wing park flier type 'thing' powered by a PAW 80 (.049), maybe 40" span, polyspan & dope covering. We'll see, ideas come and go

Well I doubt I'll ever make a contest winner, but I dont really want to make a flying lawnmower either, I dont have the skills to make my own engine and I dont see the difference in shrinking a set of already made plans and an already made plane? If Goldberg hadnt shrunk the tiger they wouldnt have a parklyer,,I wish that came in a kit it'd be a great 1/2a plane but for $99[]thats too much for me,, the 4 star I plan on shrinking is done in the .40,.60, and 1.20 size ,,much like sticks and cubs are done,,basically if we as 1/2a'ers want these planes we have to "design" them ourselves anyway..I had no clue that Tims plane was based off the LS150, if he hadnt said so, I would;ve thought it was an original design.....just my 2 cents...Rog

I have been going back and forth between several ideas but have settled on a scale YF-22 Raptor with dual Norvel AME .061 fans. I am going to design and build the fans also, much like Japman's beautiful fans. On Jan 1st I will publish full specs for the model so stay tuned.

I tried to interest some of the regular contributors in partnering on this as a team entry but, since I didn't get any replies, will go it alone. You can be sure there is going to be carbon fiber everywhere. Will have to find someone to do the machining that is going to be needed on the ducted fan rotors.

And yes, I am going to finish last years design contest project along with this years.
