RE: Pics of my HERR P51 Mustang
VERY NICE! I like the detail on the canopy. I was the guy in the Herr Mustang landing gear post. I decided not to use landing gear. I hope the bottom scoupe likes to skid on grass. I guess we'll see. By the way, what is the rest of you color scheme going to be? I am going with mostly red on the fuse with a yellow tail an then a yellow wing with red stripes.

Yepp, I made a plug...
About the colors, the front turtledeck will be blue (same blue color as rudder & cowl) the rest of the plane is covered with the silvergray Oracover. (same as fin) I´m thinking of giving the cockpit a scale touch.. with some instruments..etc etc.. time will tell how it turns out..

I think the cowl will add alot towards a scale appearance. Mounting the engine inverted will make the profile correct by moving the spinner (and thrust line) up and keep the nose nice and sleek. Nice payoff for the extra work if you ask me!

Hey Colsson, is that O.S. .10 an LA? If so I think you will find it underpowered for that plane. I'm running a Norvel BigMig .061 rated at .31 bhp. and it really gets bogged down behind the power curve (very slow transitions from slow flight to normal cruise while maintaining altitude. Not much climb performance considering my plane weighs only 2 lbs.). The LA .10 is rated at only .27 bhp (according to Towerhobbies Tech Notes). If it's a BB engine than it's probably alot better. I'd really consider dropping the extra cash on a Norvel BigMig Sport .15 R/C Revlite which will give you .50 bhp. for about $58. Just a thought. I'll be getting one myself when I wear out my .061. If you've never owned a Norvel, they are excellent engines!!

Jeremy, If you could cut about 3-4oz's off that thing it would become a whole different airplane. Make sure you're running the smallest possible radio equipment. 250mah or smaller battery, etc. The .15 would kill your wingloading compared to the .061. Much performance can be gained by making sure that you've got all the air you can get into the airframe.
What size APC is that? I've found that a Master Airscrew cut down to 5x3 or a Cox black 5x3 gave a big boost in thrust over many other props, even APC. For speed, MA has higher pitched props than an be cut down. Combatpigg likes to use a 4x4.5[X(] on his deltas. My bigmig will turn over 25k on the Cox 5x3 and handlaunch a huge 17oz delta.

RE: Pics of my HERR P51 Mustang
I'm runnin' all micro servos, and a 700mah pack (1.3 oz. heavier than the 250 mah) and a standard reciever. I do get the best performance from a 5x3 to a 5x4 so far and the prop in the pic is a 6x2 that I haven't tried yet. Now what about the.074 at 2.65 oz. and .38 bhp compared to the O.S. .10 at 3.95 oz. and .27 bhp. (.15 at 5.7 oz. and .50 bhp now definitely looks to heavy. I think you'll right!!!)

The .074 is a very nice engine. Close in power to my .15LA at less than half the weight. It'll be cheaper to get the .074 than to change the battery and receiver. You could also drop down to submicros like the hs-55, but at what cost? Yup, no real debate there!

RE: Pics of my HERR P51 Mustang
Hmm... yes it is a OS .10 LA... I must say I am worried about the extra weight from the cowl........ retracts....& retract servo..&...navigation lights..
I could by a Norvel but I´ve just bought the OS engine for this plane, so i think that i will go with the OS right now..
I´m gonna use the smallest servos possible and a 350-500mAh receiver battery.
Jeremy, how big is your fueltank?

The tank's a little 2 oz.'er. The .061 gets almost 12 min. at full throttle running 25% Nitro. What retracts and nav lights are you going to use? That plane is going to put on quite a show with all that scale detail!!
ptulmer, I think an .074 is on the horrizon. Those Norvel engines have got my attention (this was my first) and will probably be finding their way into my next couple of projects!
... a lighter battery, sub micro servos, a tiny reciever, and a .074 running 35% Nitro, hmmm......:-)

It'll fly, no doubt. You have to decide if the performance level is what you want. Prop selection will be important also. That things going to be tricked out too!

RE: Pics of my HERR P51 Mustang
I'm still on the optimum prop search myself... I'd pickup about four each of 6x3's and 6x4's and start trimming them down until you get the rpm and thrust you want. I ended up liking a 5x4 and a 5.5x3 so far but they're still a little on the conservative side. I'm going to try a 6x2, and a 5x3 like ptulmer said has worked well for him.

RE: Pics of my HERR P51 Mustang
That LA will want to stay a few thousand rpm's slower than these Norvels, but that 7x4 to 7x5 suggestion on Tower Tech Notes seems like it would bog it down pretty good. The Norvel liturature suggested a 6x3 and said it would turn it 18K. I don't think it gets it. It definitly gets more thrust with a smaller prop.

RE: Pics of my HERR P51 Mustang
Glad to hear that you like the 6x2 apc. I'm tryin' one next flight. I wonder if the .10 LA delivers its power with more torque rather than the Norvels doing it with rmp, and that makes the 7x4 or 7x5 more suited to the LA. It may be like running a four stroke- less horsepower but still lots of punch from swinging a big prop. The .061 and the .074 both have more bhp than the LA .10, but I bet the bigger displacement gives a nice rise in low rpm torque.
