RE: New Cox Sure Start .049 for $4.99
I ordered two. Even with shipping and NJ sales tax, it's only a dollar more than one glow head would cost me at the LHS. I just hope Andrew's right about the site being secure--I'm a little nervous right now because my father just got a call the other night that a man in Marin County, CA was arrested after a traffic stop with my father's driver's license and credit cards(identity theft--my father never lost his wallet or anything like that).

Tim, I got the same message, but addressed to Michael Reed! That's not me! I shot an e-mail back to apprise them of the typo--(I just don't want them getting my order confused with someone else's; it's happened with other vendors).

RE: New Cox Sure Start .049 for $4.99
Ya'll are killing me! This is an awesome deal that I couldn't pass up either! I bought five of the little buggers, and I'm hoping to use one "as-is" on a project in the future. The other four... Well, that'll all depend upon how good the first one is. I've got a small pile of other Cox engines (BW, TD's, etc) that I'm not using, so I don't know why I need five more, but it's a good deal, right?!
Any ideas about what these production engines would be good on? A simple scratch-build R/C project or something?

Wayne,
IMO they are very good engines. You most likely will need to reset the rod BEFORE you run them. So note that for those that have bought some. If you don't have one get a piston reset tool and use it FIRST. ALL of the Sure Starts I have had came NEW with very loose rods.

HP has been pricecutting inkjet printers for several years to get everyone to buy, then making significant profits selling replacement ink cartridges -- low cost, high dollar items.
If you want to sell more glow heads (low cost, high profit items), put more engines on the market. When the head burns out, most folks, rather than pull the engine off a plane, will bite the bullet and buy another head, ala HP inkjets. Estes is likely breaking even or making some money on this product engine deal -- if head sales pan out, they stand to make a bunch more.
Just my cynical opinion -- 60th aniversery or not.
But yes, this is a good deal...

Hmmm, I don't have a socket reset tool. Wasn't there a post on making one from scratch a while back? Can't seem to find it now....
Thanks,
Duke

Here are two planes that might work with the sure-start.. probably work better than with the intended gws motor..

There is tons of great planes you can fly with a Cox Sure Start .049. One of the better ones is the LS 150. Takes all of a couple days to build.

RE: New Cox Sure Start .049 for $4.99
I ordered some last night. I was about to put in the credit card info and noticed that it wasn't a secure site (was using http:// instead of https://). I added the "s" and it came up alright. Internet Explorer showed the secure site lock at the bottom, so I went back through the process of entering in all my info and all seemed to work. I was concerned when I got the e-mail today with no subject line. I usually delete those as spam. But I did the whois and a few searches and it seems to be legit to Estes. Hope so.....

I'm in the same boat as Dukester when it comes to having a socket reset tool. I've taken heads and cylinders off before, but never reset anything in there. Any tips as to where to find one of these jammies, and how to use it properly?
As for airframes... I was thinking that because it's a full-throttle engine, it should be run on a full-throttle airplane. Something like a GLH. Fast. Or, maybe a neat little C/L job would be cool.

FWIW, there are a few socket reset tools from DDD on the 'bay right now--ending soon. I was gonna pick one up, but I'm already over the hobby budget for the month, so I'll have to wait until my engines come in and evaluate whether they need it or not...

Oh, well. Knew I should've bid on the ones that ended this morning; could've had it for $13 shipped. Now DDD's re-listed more and I bet they're gonna get bid way up over that before they end in 6 days since a bunch of us need one *sigh*.
