And a few more pictures showing adding the trailing edge plate with the torque rods and clamping the plywood doublers in place. The clothes pins were'nt strong enough to pull the two pieces together, so I had to dig out the c-clamps.

Got to be REALLY careful doing this part, the structure isn't bullet proof like larger planes, and the trailing edge is only two layers of 1/16" balsa so is relatively fragile. [] So far, so good.

Great build thread! Thanks for sharing. I ordered the plans also, hope to build more from plans. I liked the symmetrical, tapered airfoil. I thought it would be fun with a full length rudder.
Keep it coming! Mike

Thanks, and will do!

Not too much left to do, just about to the really fun part, adding covering, radio and power. I finally did decide to go electric on this one, just because I already have the equipment available and ready to go, but a 1/2A slimer would work very well too.

I'm still looking for material on the original, and having almost no luck at all (besides some great info from George - thanks again.) Several internet searches pull up mentions of it, and I found a bio on "Red" Reinhardt, but zero pictures and very little actual information on the plane. I figure it will be rather unique at the field... but I have to be able to tell whoever asks about it somehow. The search continues...

cwrr5,

Here is a pic and plan from a PAMPA anthology series book titled "Old Time Stunt Construction Drawings". Hope the scan came out recognizable. The book is available from PAMPA or AMA.

Your RC version is looking good!

George

Edit: Forgot to mention, the real plan is not reverse colored. I got mine from John Pond. Many of John's plans are available from AMA now. Call or email AMA to see if they are available. Good luck.

Thanks! I can see some similarties, and some differences also like you mentioned earlier also. I'll check with AMA for the plans, might be an interesting comparison to build both.

Here's today's update also. I only had about an hour, so limited progress this time. I drew a template for the bend in the aileron torque rods using the trailing edge of the wing, joiner plate, the ailerons to get the bend the same on both sides, and bend the wire to match. I flipped the wing upside down to bend the other side. Propped the wing up between two balsa blocks again to check vertical alignment of the torque rods, and made the necessary adjustments(one was up, other was down with the servo end centered).

And some more...
I cut the servo mounting plate from 1/32" ply and glued that on the top of the wing, being careful to line it up on center. After the glue dried, the hole for the servo, which sits down into the center rib, was cut through the sheeting to match the plate. Also cut a small hole off to the side for the servo wires. I think next time, I'll offset the servo to on side as I really don't like cutting holes into the structural parts. (I didn't think about it until it was too late.) I also cut the aileron torque rods where they are inserted into the ailerons to length.

Well, day 6 of the build, and it's starting to look like a plane now(look further down).

Started off by adding the wing /fuselage hold down plate(twice - I mismeasured the first one), epoxied in with 30 minute, and taped the fuse sides to hold it while it dried. Also drilled hole for wing dowel and installed that again with 30 minute. While all of that was setting up, I added the lower fuselage front sheeting(1/8" balsa). As usual, glued from the inside to keep the exterior nicer.

While everything was drying, I drilled the ailerons to accept the 1/16" torque rods - very carefully using the drill bit between two fingers, there's not much wiggle room. I might beef up the outsides so the ailerons don't crack under stress. I grabbed a stack of CA hinges left over from another project, and cut them down to a reasonable size. then slotted the ailerons and trailing edge of the wing using an x-acto and light pressure. Not very much material there to cut through, so it wen't fairly quickly. The trailing edge sheeting makes it pretty easy to find the center for the hinge slots.

Just some more details... gotta make sure all the hinge slots line up, and match the slots in the ailerons.

Once the epoxy had set, and I finished waking up, I added two 1/16" ply braces to the wing holder plate thingy. Also dremeled out an opening in the plate to clear the aileron torque rod ends inside the fuselage. After some sanding and gentle adjusting, got the wing seated on the fuselage and aligned. Drilled a couple of 1/8" holes for the wing bolts while keeping the wing aligned with the fuselage. Then I set the wing aside and enlarged the holes in the hold down plate to accept 4-40 blind nuts.

Default RE: Rodger Dodger Build

A neat trick that I figured out a few years ago for installing blind nuts is to enlarge the hole enough so that the threaded part fits without too much pressure, add several different sized washers to a bolt to distribute the load, and tighten down the bolt so the little "teeth" on the blind nut are drawn down into the wood. Not sure how everyone else does it, but from some I've seen, they use everything from a hammer, hydraulic press, or who-knows what to get them in - and it shows. [:'(]

Once those were in, I added a drop or two of thin CA to hold the blind nuts, being careful not to get it in the threaded part. Plugged in the wing, and used 4-40 nylon bolts to tighten down the wing. Got a nice tight fit between the wing and fuselage(after just a little sanding with some 220 grit).

Ok - The Wing Is Mounted! (no naughty comments please! )

After double-checking the alignment of the wing, I cut the horizontal stab slot free (I left it only partially cut out when I cut the fuselage side sheeting so it would be easier to line up the sides) and trimmed it so the sides are even. I'll finish trimming when I'm ready to permanently attach the horizontal stab. Sanded the stab ends to approximately the right shape, then drew a template for the rounded end to sand the other side exactly the same.

Lots more sanding to do... got the tailfeathers rounded off working slow with 220 grit. I'll finish sand with 400 before I cover the plane. Just temporarily assembled everything for now so the progress is noticeable. So far, so good!

CWRR5-

Great building thread. All us builders love to see a model go together. Makes me want to go make some dust! Unfortunately, I've got a 84" Stinson SR5 on the building board right now that I just have to finish. I have already built 4 other planes since I started the completion of the SR5 and I am starting to feel guilty. Enough of my problems. Great Thread! Thank you.

Thanks! I have the same feeling sometimes, and I have a few of those going too... 4*40, Solo star trainer(highly modified - down to electronics and ready for flight by sunday hopefully), Sig Kommander(75% re-build), Roger Dodger(in this thread), and some minor repairs on the rest when I get to them. This one just caught my interest in a big way, so everything else got pushed out of the way for now. I'm intentionally building as quick as possible so I can get it flying by the end of next week.

Didn't get anything done today - was doing other non-airplane things, more progress tomorrow hopefully. []

Edit: I got lots of dust(see pictures above), want me to send you some?

Re: The original CL Roger Dodger plans.

Someone posted on another board that the John Pond plans are now available from AMA so I checked. They are indeed available with exception of some that have ownership issues (marked in red). There is a list in PDF format, plus a few old Pond catalogs, if desired. There is also an order form in PDF format to print, and, I think, an online form to fill out. the AMA plan number for the CL Roger Dodger is # 26896.

Even if you don't build the plane, sometimes it is interesting to observe the construction methods and innovations used in the early days. I have an old SE-5 CL stunt (?) plan from the late 40's that uses two metal flashlight battery cases as a fuel tank. Venting was by using grease fittings (zerks) with the spring removed. The loose ball became a check valve. Hi-tech for the day.

Right, I found them the other day... Still pondering whether to order them yet... It's very interesting (to me) how they came up with many of the things we take for granted now. At that time(50's and earlier), there was very little or no prepackaged hardware or accessories for rc(or CL, etc), and no tower hobbies. If you needed it, you made it. Some of the stuff that was devised was incredible!

And no ARFs!

Here's today's progress... It doesn't look like much, but it is actually quite a bit.

Started off by aligning and pinning the horizontal stab to the fuselage, making sure that the measurement from the tip of the stab to the wingtip is the same on both sides. Also checked to make sure that the stab sits level with the fuselage(at a right angle as the fuse has straight sides), and level as compared to the wing when viewed from the tail. Much measuring and re-adjusting here, and very time consuming to get it right. I hate this step.

Next I cut away all the excess material from the vertical stab and did most of the sanding to round the leading edge. I cut a hole on the centerline in the fuselage where the leading edge stub is inserted and installed the fin aligned with the back of the fuselage. Using scrap wood and clothes pins, I pinned the rudder to the fin to help alignment and checked that everything was square. (90 degrees to the horiz. stab)

While everything was drying, I sanded the wingtips to shape starting with 220 grit and finished with 400. Also did some more sanding on the rest of the wing with 400 grit to get it ready for covering. Added 1/8" balsa doublers to the nose, and sanded them down to the front rounded cheek of the fuselage.

I cut a slot in the elevator to add the 1/8" dowel joiner and glued that in, as well as carefulyl sanding the trailing edges of the rudder and elevator. when the elevator joiner had dried, I cut the center trailing edge away and trimmed the back side of the leading edge to fit through the rudder, and temporarily taped the elevator in place.

hehehe! Sorry!

Thanks for the encouragement guys, so far it's been a fun build. Didn't get anything done this weekend due to other(non-RC) stuff, and finishing up a .40 trainer. More to follow this week, and hopefully a maiden flight Friday or Saturday.
